Here I go through the steps to install a Weber Sensor Port Grommet in the rotisserie ring of my Weber Kettle. The process can also be used to install it in other grills and offsets.

I see so many folks abuse their drill bits. Just because your drill motor can reach high rpm's, doesn't mean that the speed is recommended for High Speed drill bits. If you are drilling aluminum, no problem. But steel, that is completly different. You can burn up exensive high speed drill bits and ruin them quickly by going too fast. It is best to use a varible speed drill and go to a much slower rpm. You will simply be amazed at how many holes you can actually drill with the same bit. Especially the step drill bits. They need to go very slow and use a light to medium pressure for drilling. Slower is also much more safe, smaller drill bits can break easily especially when breaking through the metal and that can cause injury to your hands. Be safe, slow down.

Nice worthwhile mod. I would do the very same thing. Highly recommend. I have that same port on the WSM as you mentioned. I have the cajun bandit rotisserie but already use that port. If and when I get a kettle, I'll do this mod in a heartbeat. Don't mind popping holes in it to get it like I want it.

I hook my sensor clip to the slot that the handle end of the rotisserie sits in. After putting the skewer in i attach the clip above it with the sensor inside and the wire coming back out the slot above the skewer. Has worked great for me.

I’ve got to put one in the side wall of my old WSM. Mine was made before they had the probe ports or a lid temp gauge. Thank you.

After you drilled to your desired hole size with the step down bit, use the same bit on the inside lightly as a deburring tool. I found it works great.

I need to do this on all my Weber’s! I have an old WSM and it doesn’t have one either thanks for the how to video... did you go back with high heat paint on the edges?
@CookingWithRy
@CookingWithRy 6 жыл бұрын
No, didn't repaint it. With that enamel that was knocked off, I think it would fail pretty quickly under heat. It's a fair trade off, though. I keep the kettle under cover during bad weather, so I can keep a watch out for rust.

Great video. Would you be kind enough to make a video to install this one 26 inch (or 22) Weber Kettle itself? If you've already done it, where can I find the video?

I probably won't be doing that, but the process should be very similar :)

Everyone uses the slotted port for probes but what's the top circlular opening on the grommet for? Can a grill thermometer squeeze through there when you're not using a probe?
@CookingWithRy
@CookingWithRy 2 жыл бұрын
I use that to hold an ambient temp probe. You just slide the probe portion through and it is held just inside the cook chamber.

How did you secure the Weber rotisserie ring to your weber kettle can you provide specifics in terms of what types of pins or screws you used to make the fit more secure?
@garretkom
@garretkom 4 жыл бұрын
You mentioned the previous video as it relates to the rotisserie ring?
@CookingWithRy
@CookingWithRy 4 жыл бұрын
There are two holes in the bottom of the ring. I simply drilled matching holes in the kettle and use tapping screws to secure the ring when I'm using it.

I'm not sure if you are familiar with the Thermoworks Smoke X4 and the large diameter probes it has. If so, do you think they would pass through either hole on the probe port? I'm thinking of putting a couple of these in my Old Country Smokehouse. I just got the Smoke X4 today and the cables are too short (1m) to run the way I had been using my Guru probes (2m) which is down the chimney. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Great channel! I gave you a shout out on my Pastrami videos - yours was the method I used. Thanks, again.

Where would you locate port on a Weber 22" grill?
@CookingWithRy
@CookingWithRy 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t put the silicone sensor port in the kettle directly. It would be too close to the charcoal and direct flame. I don’t believe it’s able to withstand those sorts of direct temperatures.

Why would you not put it in the "base" of the Weber? If you chose to not use the rotisserre part you would still be set up for a thru wall temp system.
@CookingWithRy
@CookingWithRy 2 жыл бұрын
In the base it can be really close to burning charcoal and I don't think it's rated for direct contact with flame.

We have to invent the probe friendly rotisserie that reverses direction every rotation. Lol. They actually make wireless probes now that can be used in a rotisserie.
@CookingWithRy
@CookingWithRy 5 жыл бұрын
@@shadowdog500 I've seen the one called the Meater, but the size of the probes is pretty large. I do hope we can have really reliable wireless probes soon. That would be fantastic for rotisserie :)

Cooking With Ry that’s the one I was thinking of. Here is a photo of it being used in a rotisserie m.imgur.com/U3mXPAH?r. The guy who took the photo had the probe get too hot during a flair up so I would make sure the exposed end is not in a position that can get a flair up.
