My late father - who served in both the pre-war (1939-45) ROYAL Navy and during the '39-'45 conflict too, ALWAYS corrected me when I referred to his service in 'the navy!' To his dying day, he served in The ROYAL Navy!...

This Unit seems closely to the Old Guard at Arlington Cemetery. The Old Guard does the Presidential 21 Gun Salute and it is loud and beautiful as the blasts roll down the Potomac River Valley. I had a friend who was Old Guard on the Burial Detail. He then went to Iraq and Afghanistan for a couple of tours. He had traumatic Brain Injury from several IED's and bad PTS. Sadly he became a statistic of 22 Too Many. RIP Brian.

To be fair I don’t think the Americans are giving out medals like “confetti”. We just happen to be deployed all over the world doing stuff (not that our great allies the Brits aren’t of course, but perhaps the roles she held in the Royal Navy didn’t give her many opportunities for recognition). That being said she’s seems like a great selection for this duty. I really enjoy ForcesTV. It gives a good view into the British armed forces.

I wonder if someone could help me here please? The usual Royal Navy salute is to the right side of the head - hand tilted so thatthe knuckles of the fingers are shown to the person receiving the salute. I see here however, that the 'army' salute seems to be being used - can you help me understand why please?

It is somehow fascinating to see yeomen warders sitting in front of a computer. And if the Tower has magic aspects, I surely came across one that invested me in full: when I entered the Tower for the first time, I thought it was guarded by Beefeaters; when I came out, I knew by certain that it is guarded by Yeomen Warders.

I'm known by my friends to be somewhat sexist, but that said, I WILL not stand by and ignore slurs on ANY members of the BRITISH armed forces! Okay, so this lady doesn't have a chest full of 'combat' medals, so what!? She has 'done her time' and served the Crown. She is just as entitled to do this job as anyone else with a similar service record! Times change, but please, if you doubt the 'value' of women in the services, do a bit of research! You'll find that many served at Trafalgar - and in numerous conflicts since - and that it is only 'tradition' that stops them being recognised for many, many achievements in the military!

I sure wish we had opportunities like this. About females in command, I could care less if my Commander was female. She would get the respect and support any Commander would. I am a professional, I follow my Command, as long as they are legal and moral. I served Commanders I was positive was going to get me killed, and I’ve served Commanders I would gladly take a bullet for. I can tell by the way this Officer walks, she knows what leadership is and I be willing to work for her.

Most of those medals are Operational Service Medals which are awarded when they go on operational tours. The more medals you see, the more operational tours they have been on - and to be a Yeoman Warder, you need 20+ years in the forces, so you are inevitably going to see many deployments, hence the multiple medals.

The myth of "1+7+7+6 = 21" was added later. The real reason is that the Royal Navy always had 21-gun salutes with their ships and when they signed a treaty on naval conduct shortly after the war for independance, they agreed that all salutes would be answered "gun for gun" - meaning that a saluting ship would fire 21 guns and the fort that was being saluted would return 21 guns. This evolved into an (almost) worldwide standard of fireing 21-gun salutes for important occasions (i.e. visits of heads of state, royal occasions, etc.). Fun fact in addition to that: The original purpose of a gun salute was to show, that one is not a threat. If a ship "emptied" its cannons voluntarily (by harmlessly shooting one round per cannon on at least one broadside) it could be assumed it would not attack as it just put itself into a far inferior position for a sea battle.

As she joined in 81 for at least a third of her career women were forbidden from serving at sea and being RN rather than ground forces there will not been as many chances for her to deploy once women were permitted. She deserves respect for her service, not criticism because of the narrow minded restrictions that the military applied until quite recently on her gender!
