I stand with fellow metal-detectorists when I say "engrave or otherwise personalize your valuables in a way they can be positively identified." I started my hobby in 1994 by finding a class ring that I could return to the owner. Don't get me wrong, I WANT to find valuables that I can claim as my own, and often do (mostly coins) but when I can identify the owner of jewelry and return it, it satisfies me more than the value of the item I've found.

Bro, this is very nice. I lost my gold chain that my grandfather gave me on his death bed on the beach. We called a guy who charged “$50 to come out and 100$ if they found it.” Dude finds it in about 10 minutes with metal detector. Proceeds to extort me saying he feels how heavy it was and could get more at a pawn shop. Ended up paying him 300$, still about 3-4 times under the gold value but I’ve never been that close to physically fighting someone as an adult. Always made me wonder if those guys say they never found it and just pocket the expensive/heavy stuff. Wish there were more helpful/empathetic people in the world like you dude.

In American culture when someone helps you find your golden ring you usually don’t just walk away mid sentence without really looking them in the eye or anything it just comes off as disrespectful body language wise especially because he helped her and he didn’t have to
