To be fair, the Sentinels are pretty good at catching your typical civilian mutants ie 95% of mutants. In these clips they’re up against a highly trained, well-equipped mutant paramilitary force, which includes several alpha class mutants

They still did stupid things like clotheslineing itself, and gathering around Gambits card. Highly trained or alpha class mutants or not, those are on the Sentinels

Wrong. That's what happens when the government highers donor cronies or tries to build giant killer robots themselves.

So, the government ordered the construction of mutant-killing robots, and assigned a considerable budget for this. But as this was a new responsibility it was unclear who would be selecting the manufacturer. The robots would be supposed to work in air and on the ground and both Air Force and Army were interested in collaborating. However, the Navy, not wanting to miss a piece of the massive budget, demanded the right to provide one third of the requirements in case the robots might at a later stage be deployed for battles above and below water. They all agreed to assign the task through DARPA, considering DARPA’s experience in robotics and AI. However, several years into the project, a senate inquiry led to the conclusion that as this robot is also supposed to be deployed on US soil and in US airspace, it is also a federal matter and the FBI demanded to leave DARPA out of it because that would put too much power to the DoD compared to the DoJ involvement. Finally, after a 9 year delay, the assignment was given to Lockheed having only little experience in autonomous robots. It took them about 16 years to develop the first prototype, surpassing the original budget by 200% and tripling the price per robot. It was then decided to also make the robots available for export, and an additional 6 years to allow for including requirements by external customers and deals with foreign countries to have parts of the robot built there in exchange for orders. A first robot was delivered 43 years after the initial request by the government, but only to the Army as it appeared that a major construction flaw prevented the robots from flying. This was fixed during the following 9 years, although the resulting robot could only fly for a fraction of the time as the initial requirement. Further deployment of the robots was regularly hindered by issues in the software system of the spare part supply chain and a security leak in the main remote maintenance API, which may or may not have lead to the firmware being injected with a backdoor by china, russia, or sn other foreign regime, the inquiry on that is still ongoing.

You got to wonder what the thought process for this weapon system was in series proper. It was like nobody considered they were dealing with nimble agile mutants. US Government's logic in the series was let's make these expensive clunky giant robots, not trouble shoot the artificial intelligence, and not fix their balance problems.

The "logic" was that they were going to make machines that would do literally nothing but execute people in concentration camps, and then somebody decided to use them as enforcers/soldiers instead.

If a jet is millions of dollars and this can do everything a jet can do and more and is 10x bigger...oh, about a billion in 2018 USD.

Maybe they're in the universe where they don't exist or they just haven't encountered them uet
