Siúil, siúil, siúil a rún,
Siúil go socair agus siúil go ciúin,
Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom,
‘S go dté tú a mhúirnín, slán.
I wish I was on yonder hill
'tis there I'd sit and cry my fill,
And every tear would turn a mill,
‘S go dté tú a mhúirnín, slán.
Siúil, siúil, siúil a rún,
Siúil go socair agus siúil go ciúin,
Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom,
‘S go dté tú a mhúirnín, slán.
I'll sell my rock, I'll sell my reel,
I'll sell my only spinning wheel,
To take away the sword of steel
‘S go dté tú a mhúirnín, slán.
Siúil, siúil, siúil a rún,
Siúil go socair agus siúil go ciúin,
Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom,
‘S go dté tú a mhúirnín, slán.
Áááá...
Siúil, siúil, siúil a rún,
Siúil go socair agus siúil go ciúin,
Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom,
‘S go dté tú a mhúirnín, slán.
Deir an stair gan misneach a bheith ’at,
Ar an taobh seo den chloch deiridh.
Ach uair sa saol, ardaíonn tonn fiáin na cóire
chun na spéire go lonrach
agus pósann an stair agus an dóchas.
Mar sin, cuardaigh an t-athrú mara,
ar an taobh thall den díoltas.
Creid sa gcladach geall, nach bhfuil sé gcéin uainn.
Creid sa bhfeart, creid sa tsíocháin, creid i dtobar an leighis,
Creid.
Siúil, siúil, siúil a rún,
Siúil go socair agus siúil go ciúin,
Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom,
‘S go dté tú a mhúirnín, slán.

This has been one of my favorite songs since I was a small child. When my voice dropped, I lamented I couldn't sing it anymore. It was "too pretty", I was convinced, for a man's voice to do it justice. I have rarely been happier to be wrong.

We spent the last two days moving out of a four bedroom house and the big screen was the last to go. The whole time we moved we put Seo Linn on and just let them play non stop. I'm getting where I can sing along with them. My daughter and I stopped a few times to sing with them at the top of our lungs. Of course we had the volume up loud. The drums take me to another place, so does the accordian. These artists are top of the line. Won't find any better Irish singers!!! LOVE THEM!

Love the intense soliloquy near the end. Thanks so much for the lyrics to it as well. For us English speakers, here is the translation for that part of the song: History says not to be courageous ’, On this side of the end stone. But once in a lifetime, the wild wave of justice rises to the horizon shining and history and hope marry. So look for the sea change, on the other side of revenge. Believe in the white shore, it is not far from us. Believe in the miracle, believe in the peace, believe in the well of healing, Believe. (What s beautiful version...THANKS!!!)

Here's an English translation of the Irish parts. I translated it myself; I speak Irish fluently (but not natively). Chorus: Walk, walk, walk my love Walk calmly and walk quietly Walk to the door and run away (or elope) with me And may you, my darling, go safely And the spoken part: History tells us not to have courage On this side of the ending rock * But sometimes in life, a wild wave of justice rises Shining brightly towards the sky And history and hope wed As thus, search for the changing of the seas On the other side of vengeance (meaning, once vengeance is past / left behind us) Believe in the bright shore, that it is not far from us Believe in heaven, believe in peace, believe in the well of healing (Healing wells are a very popular trope in Irish Mythology) Believe * this might be too literal; it may well mean "in life / on this side of the grave" but I am not 100% sure about that

I love that their version makes this more emotional and angry - it’s about a woman selling off everything she owns and suffering through it so her husband could fight the Brits, after all. We don’t know what the probable husband is thinking, but she would go out and blow their heads off herself if she could’ve in the time this was written. It’s also kinda cool to see a young group taking this song on with a man singing it, which is not the norm for this song.
@JOHN----DOE
@JOHN----DOE 9 ай бұрын
Not quite. She would sell her only spinning wheel "to take away the sword of steel." It's an ANTI-war song by a woman lamenting her husband going off to war. And NOT originally to fight the Brits--to fight as one of the "wild geese" in foreign wars (probably for Napoleon)@@eriktroske6405

@Eternity Bound You have so many facts wrong, lord above. First of all, Gallic is not spoken anymore. French and Hallo are both Latin languages. Second, the connection of the Gauls and the Irish isn't through Galatia, it's in either Northern Spain, through the similarly named Galicia, or from the Aquitaine region. Thirdly, Farsi isn't a Celtic language, it's indo-aryan. All three languages mentioned are indoeuropean though, so there is that at least.

In high school I was very much into folk music. My girlfriend and I learned Revolutionary War era songs and made a program of them. We went around to all the history classes and sang them. Davy Holden's page introduced me to Seo Linn's cover of Óró Sé do Bheatha ’Bhaile and other Irish folk/rebel songs. This one is also amazing. Told my brother I'd love to learn Gaelic and he suggested I spend a visit Inishmore, Anan islands and I'd be fluent in 2 weeks. Just added it to my bucket list

I love the way this builds and becomes loud and defiant. My new favourite version of this song.

I have only ever heard it as a woman's lament. (eg Clannad) The defiance here is brilliant It takes it from weakness to defiance, but a Good defiance. He is not declaring war on anyone, he is just reclaiming his birthright and heritage. (He actually says he wants to take swords away) Love it.

I just love these guys. I sit on my hands waiting for their next video and they never never disappoint. My favorite by far of Irish singers and artists. Gods they're good! If I don't see them live before I leave this world I'd feel sorely cheated. I don't understand the words (darn) but I sure can feel them.

Went looking for some Clannad to calm me down before work and happened upon this fresh sesh. Now this is a great reimagining. Go hiontach, buachaillí.

Csodálatosak az ír dalok, csodálatos az ország. Én, magyarként, bejártam Írországot vagy 25 éve és soha nem feledem. Rokon népek vagyunk a szívünkben, a szabadság mindenek előtt! Kedvelem ezt az együttest, hajrá, fiatal írek!

Love the music and the mix, voice and everything. Wish I knew what he was saying in the Irish. The best male singing of this song as far as lyrics was the one James Taylor did where he sings as an observer of the girl whose boyfriend went off to war. I do like the Irish part of the chorus. The first time I heard this song was a trio of college students, two girls and a guy with guitars singing their way through American History. Loved it ever since.
