생각해보니 고1때 유학도 안간 상태에서 차이콥스키 3등이라니 쇼팽콩쿨도 미쳤지만 이것도 못지않게 미쳤다.. 러시아 국제콩쿨에서 국내파 고1이 상을타다니... 그때 더 주목받지 못한게 진짜 비운이었네

죽은 친구에게 바쳐진 진혼곡인 전람회의 그림. 마지막 기예프의 대문에서 그런 진혼곡의 진수(眞髓)를 충분히 느낄 수 있어서 울컥하기까지 한다. 10대에 이 대작을 완벽하게 표현해 낸 조성진은 정말 천상 피아니스트이자 예술가이다.

11월1일 앙코르에서의 조성진은 무소르그스키 그 자체였다. 다시 한번 느끼지만 이제는 정말 조성진에겐 더이상 한국인 최초 쇼팽콩쿠르1위라는 타이틀은 중요하지 않아졌다. 앞으로 더 무궁무진해 질 것 이고 더 많은 작곡가를 만나고 연주하고 새로운 시도를 더 많이 해 볼 앞으로의 조성진을 더 응원할 것이다. 피아니스트 조성진님 응원합니다!

I have heard Kissin do this piece at a much later age, but it cannot compare with the orchestral textures this teenager could draw from the piano! Even though this performance will mature with age, it is still one of Seong-jin's finest accomplishments! How wonderful to find a great pianist who is not dominated by the Russian school.

This is surely good, but it belongs not to the best recordings .Listen to Yuliana Avdeeva. This is another level of musical complexity. In my ears the very best of all. But this is my opinion.

아니 이때부터 이미 대가였구만 ㅋㅋㅋ세상에 (좋은뜻으로 ) 기가차다 진짜 타고났는데 노력까지했으니 잘될수밖에 근데 쇼퍵콩쿨에서 본인스승과 사이안좋다고 10점만점에 1점 준사람이 있다는게 그런데도 1등했다는게 대단함 어느분야든 저런 걸림돌들이있나봄 어케 1점을주냐 참네

Probably among the best Pictures renditions ever. The piano was also in a good shape for it, not too bright like Steinways tend to be. Still wish he would have chosen the Shigure Kawai instead.

이 곡을 정말 좋아하는 나로서는 이 곡이 이런식으로도 해석이 될 수 있다는게 너무 좋기도 하고 저 나이에 저런걸 하는게 충격적이기도 하고... 건반 살짝 살짝 건드리는거 같은데도 묵직한 소리는 다 나는 신기한 마법;;

I love how he expresses the music through his body language and expressions. Like how he jerks his body on more broader notes while on the more slower peaceful songs he delays his hand and holds it in the air gracefully. Little things like that can add a lot to a performance

20세 이전의 조성진의 연주 동영상 볼 때마다 놀라움을 금치 못했지만 이 연주 정말 놀라겠네요~ 테크닉은 물론이지만 연주곡에 대한 깊은 이해 엄청나네요 ~

This playing goes inside. That makes his play so wonderful. It is more than the perfect technique, it is his beautiful expression, that touches me. A person can only carry that within himself.

I came to this video after listening to Kissin's performance. Cho's sound feels soft and sensitive, but not weak at all. And Kissin's sound feels sharp and passionate, but not stiff at all. I love both performances. I can't choose one.

Personally I think I prefer Kissin's interpretation, though it comes in close. I think it is worth noting that Seong-jin Cho seems to have played in a more impressionistic, Ravelian way whereas Kissin seems to be truer to Mussorgsky's original writing. Howbeit, I am most partial to Pletnev's studio recording which I think is a firery and full of growl, but thoughtful and extremely coordinated rendition. The way he adapts The Great Gate of Kiev to make it sound more like bells is astounding!

평소 전람회의 그림을 좋아했는데 이렇게 조성진씨 버전으로 들으니 너무 좋네요. 앞으로 좋아하던 곡 들 조성진씨 버전 찾아다녀야 겠어요 ㅋㅋㅋ 난쟁이나 사뮤엘과 슈뮤일레 같은 곡은 원래는 안듣는데 조성진씨 버전으로 들으니 다 듣게 되버리네요.

Amazing performance and only 17!! Can't decide which I like better, this or Kissin. Both are incredible but I like Cho's expressive nature and delicate phrasing throughout although that might be due to the better recording equipment comparative to Kissin.

The best I've heard are Richter and Kapell. Richter's is the more famous. Kapell's is even better.

He gets it, the whole package. He understands the orchestral voicing, the time stretching, the dynamics and the meaning of the work. It's as if Ravel himself were coaching him. Just incredible from a 17 y/o. One can find technical faults here and there, but this is a masterful performance. I've listened to so many pianists try to do this piece - this is one the best I've ever heard.

No, there is no orchestral voicing. Ravel ruined the piece with his orchestration. The timbre of an orchestra is not needed.

I hate the orchestration of this piece. It's nothing like the original piano version. Not even close.

Ravel bears no relevance to a piano performance of this piano piece. This is a great performance, I won't say it's the best I've heard, but he is definitely an accomplished pianist and I hope to hear more from him.
