In the inaugural Expedition Log, I visit a dead mall in Woodlawn, Maryland which is right outside of Baltimore. This is a tour of the nearly abandoned Seoul Plaza, which is Anchor to the Security Square Mall.
This series will explore dead malls, abandoned places, beautiful places, and everything in-between.

Holy smokes, we've come a long way since the pilot episode of the Expedition Log Series! When I did the commentary track for this episode, I was actually pretty sick, which is why I sound awful. I plan to revisit this place at some point for a reshoot, so please stay tuned! Check out the rest of the Expedition Log Series, as Episode 20 for the abandoned Landmark Mall in Alexandria, VA was just published. Thanks for all the amazing support, and stay tuned for much much more!

It's so crazy I watch these and it's so sad to see these places fall apart/turn into dead zones. Once brought so much joy and excitement. I actually went to my mall today to walk around and I was looking at things I never noticed before. Even my mall even though so small over half the stores are closed. Great video!!

@@sal im glad i found your channel 'I've been interested in the decline of the American Mall in the last 20 years from strip malls and Amazon internet sells ..I never got the appeal of walking in & out of stores and weather to shop at strip malls...but glad i went down the dead mall Sal rabbit hole tonight I'm a fan....I did love the very small warning printed sign about where to not stand in the elevator LMAO ... but I think going down that hallway alone to the elevator was probably the dangerous choice especially since i never saw 0% security on that side of mall the whole time.

Home mall! Home area of Woodlawn, MD. I was raised here my entire life, and remember lots about this mall. The clientele nor vendors this mall brings isn't exactly what it used to be. They used to have a Friendly's Restaurant in here near the food court. The center atrium was a water fountain that was turned into a stage, then completely removed. They had a Woolworth's where Burlington is now (a sit-in Burger King was in that same wing in the 90s), old fashioned arcade, Suncoast, and the trade school you saw was a Montgomery Wards. HECHT'S was where the Macy's is now. Seoul Plaza was a botched project that had the potential to be great, but never reached 100% occupancy. The lettering you were wondering about on the entrance was a welcome sign and also the market name. That entire development goes un-monitored, and even being a local, I never walked upstairs during its vacated state. From my understanding, the local church "Set The Captives Free" has purchased Seoul Plaza with plans of rehabbing it for a community focused church, business, outreach, etc. Which is a great move to revitalize the space. Bennigan's and IHOP have been vacated for ever a decade. IHOP may be able to undergo rehab, but Bennigan's on the other hand, may as well be condemned. Why? Because the majority of the interior was wood. Due to the abandonment and humidity of MD summers, I am almost certain that the interior has decayed so much, it is in an unrecoverable state. Absolute shame, since it was an amazing inside, and had great food there! It is a shame that this is prime real estate, and it is just rotting. Security Blvd serves many government departments (Department Of Health And Human Services AND SSA Headquarters) on that corridor (hence the name of the street and mall), so to have great eateries would thrive during lunch time. This area is...fairly rough around the edges, but me being a true local, it is home. Would I move back to Woodlawn? No. But it is home nonetheless. Hope this gave some perspective to you! Happy to elaborate on anything about this mall since I would consider myself a neighborhood historian. lol

I just visited here today. The only remaining tenants are a barber shop, a braiding shop, a Mexican food shop, and a "spa". The upper roof is leaking water, and the floors are buckling upper and lower in some places. I did take a few photographs, but nothing special.

Started watching this series because the Cortana Mall was my "Disneyland" when I was teen in South LA in the mid 80's. After that, watched a few more of your videos of other malls I had been to over the years that are now dying. It's awesome to see how the quality of your videos has gotten better as you've progressed. You've always given a good history of each mall, and done a great job of interweaving the history with the tour, but your telling of those stories has also improved. Gonna watch this whole series in order. Thank you.

At about 2:00 you can glimpse The Great Cookie. Years ago they had the greatest fudge slices, replete with walnuts. It was the greatest fudge treat, dare I say, in the free world. I would sometimes buy all that they had, they were THAT good. Cash only, about one dollar each. About the size of a slice of bread, only much thicker. I really miss that fudge. True B-more tale.

Security Square Mall once advertised itself as, "The Mall with the Most." That's a little hard to believe, but it did outlast Owings Mills. The west side of Baltimore County, in the 70's, had Westview and Security Square. The east side had Golden Ring and Eastpoint. Golden Ring is long gone, and I'm not sure of the fate of Westview. Security Square (which gets its name from the nearby sprawling Social Security complex) has a built-on base of shoppers from the employees there, and the local area's residents have a stabel income from that same source. The Seoul Plaza concept might not have been thought out very well, but at least the entire mall isn't a ghost town.

Sal you might love this! My Mom used work for Mewshaw's a formal dining and Bar for a single owner hotel. Now it's shady chain hotel likely with rooms by the hour. Up the hill from Fox Chevrolet. She'd drop me off at the cinema at Security Square Mall with enough money to watch any movies and food and pick me up at 9 PM inside the mall. This was one of the first business open! Most of the store front's weren't even started yet. One night while I was waiting from one of the back hallways to Penny's I saw a guy ride a Harley out the door with a tool belt on the sissy bar! I also as a child went to the opening of Westview & Mondawmin Mall's, E.J. Corvettes Discount Store not 2 miles into the City on US#40 from Westview. Do you have any footage of the Costco supposedly the Phoenix of Owings Mills Mall, yeah I went to that grand opening too!

Hey sal we have two dead malls here in Peoria IL. One which is about 30 minutes from me in Galesburg its Carl Sandburg Mall on Henderson Avenue three anchors were K-mart/JC Penny/ Bergner's (Bon-Ton) and still stuck in 1985 and one of the original McDonald's that closed sometime in the 80's some of the McDonald's stuff was still there in 2016 when I visited with friends but I don't have filming equipment to capture the 1985 two out of the three anchors are closed. Borders Books(anchor1) filed for bankruptcy 3 years after built. Bergner's(The Bonton) flagship store for our area closed last august due to bankruptcy. Hy-Vee which is a local grocery chain is the only anchor left along with 55 small shops are occupied. The local paper said that it had a vacancy rate of 70%. You could drive by and the place is deader than dead during Christmas shopping season. On the other hand our other mall which is 3 miles away and was built in 1973 Northwood's Mall a Simon Property is doing well and is 95% occupied and is enclosed and still retains some of the 70's 80's and 90's décor but is well maintained and super clean well lighted parking and the lot is old but well kept.

This is the history of various areas & shopping habits of our "blended" Korean & other groups in Baltimore..... Too bad so much liberal Dems have allowed so much crime to develop in this area thru the years. I'm sure that fact has great influence on this whole situation.

The owners of Seoul Plaza know that there is a thriving Korean community in Ellicott City, so they decide to build their mall... in Woodlawn? They would have been better off fighting for a space IN Ellicott City. Or somewhere just a stone's throw from it at least. I guess Arundel Mills is too much competition? smh purchasing a part of Security Mall was a bad idea lol edit: at least they turned a profit.

I've noticed, that the buildings that are abandoned are immediately at a 50-50 chance of being used again some time in the future. That is pretty low chances. The longer the structure sits, the less chance of someone wanting to do anything with the building. If it sits abandoned long enough, the weather will start to infiltrate, the roof will start leaking and interior damages occur. I used to think that was not a big deal as a new tenant would strip the interior and rebuild anyway, but if it has a leaking roof and the interior starts to grow black mold, the chances to get a new tenant is almost zero. This is when you would exepect to see the building demolished. As for the graffiti, society is really non compliant. There are those that feel they can do anything they want with no reprisal and they will paint graffiti on the walls, kick in the walls, break windows, tear it up for absolutely no reason. The mindset today is, if they do it and get away with it, it's ok to do it. Sort of like the question, if a tree falls down in a forest and nobody is there to hear it, was there actually a sound when the tree fell? I can tell other examples of this same negligence of the people, and it is being done by young kids as well as mid aged men/women. It is like a virus on our country where these generations feel they can do what they want and enjoy destroying what someone had took pains to build. Its a sad state.

I have always felt the malls need to do more to survive today. One thing would be for the mall to have its own web page. On this page would be a selection of the store where you could order through the web site. The mall would need to require qualifying stores to post and sell on the website to make it work. Another mall actually rents out space as residences and office space. There is a 10 year wait to get a residence space in this mall. They should be open to allow churches rent space as well. It won't get any easier to survive but they need to think outside the box or they will fail. Seeing some of these beautiful malls so near shuttering the doors is such a shame and seeing them demolished is really bad to see. The management needs to take more effort to try to populate the spaces anyway they can. But it seems the management or the owners, just go so far and then let it go belly up..

As a native Woodlawnite,I KNOW the answer, but it's not politically correct to say so.When the mall was first built,I was in junior high school (another harrowing experience).Me and my buddy would ride our bikes up there with maybe a buck or two in our pocket and check out the latest records at Harmony Hut.On a good day we would get a soda and a pretzel at Hot Sam;once in a while another buddy that worked at Caramel Corn would 'hook us up' if the boss wasn't around. It was a good time, we would just hang out and check out the chicks (most of them just laughed at us,lol).Spencer Gifts was another cool place and in later years the head shop opened up there.I remember buying my first pack of ZigZag papers there.I haven't been there since the 80's and wouldn't go there even if I was armed like Rambo. Anyway, thanks for the memories, guys!

The thing that always perplexes me is how bad Mondawmin's rep is, and how stagnant Security Square is, yet Westview, whose location screams "bad news" is as vibrant and busy as it is. Bizarre.

@@kevenpinder7025 I think it's kind of reverse reasoning. When I worked near Westside, in the 90's, and crack was epidemic, the bank and store clerks were sweet as pie. My theory is they did not want to annoy anyone, and have some looney create an incident.

There is still a big Korean presence in Woodlawn. Commercially, the core became a small chain of Korean oriented supermarkets called H Mart opened in shuttered supermarket buildings off Route 40. There is still a very large Korean church on Rolling Road a stone's throw from the Mall.

Edmondson has been plagued by a series of really bad fires. Not all at once but like one every 10 years. Thae last one was so bad they just tore down about 10% of the total structure.

It's a department store chain. Well above Sears/K Mart, but not as nice as Macy's. Think Kohls, but much larger buildings.

I certainly do! If you watch further into my series though, I’ve distanced myself from his style. While his are based on sarcastic observational commentary, I chose to take the investigative route to do every bit of research I could, to give the timeline from the malls dedication, to its downfall. Thanks for watching!
