This is Hobbs for dummies! XD There's a lot of holes in the explanation that would make it a lot easier to understand, there's a lot of steps that she missed. However this is the most simplified version so I don't hate it.

They don't quite operate independently if all of the seperated parts belong to the same government party. All you get out of this is a hopeful oligarchy of those in authoritative position. Hence the need for something to be above even them such as the law itself. Rules to the game. Unfortunately persons and groups do their best to find loopholes or agreements that benefit one another over a period of time to which the general populace don't have the time to keep an eye on those whom they have appointed. So far the best we have come up with is tern limits in order to slow the possible abuses down.

The legislative, executive, and judicial powers are separated but don't operate independently because they have to to keep each other in check with the purpose of preventing one branch from becoming too powerful.
