Remember it is a song written my Martin albeit sung by Dave. Martins issue was alcohol whereas Daves was drugs. It can probably be taken both ways. Martin Gore wrote everything on this masterpiece of an album. Incredible was a song writing engine he is.

Dave's singing with this last syllable a little lower is indeed magnificent. This technique will be used again in the song "useless" which should be listened to in its album version but also in the remixed version by Kruder and Dorfmeister that many consider much better than the original. Thank you very much Seph for the sincerity of your reactions. They bring us back to the emotions of our own first listenings... a few years ago 😅

A lot of people think this song is about drugs. But I say not. A lot of Depeche mode songs are about faith/religion. In this one he is singing about trying to be righteous on Moral and walking the right path. But as in all of us we slip up from time to time. We ain’t perfect. You could say it’s the devil in his Conscience saying to him “Sometimes”?? Great song. Apparently the bass line is lifted from a pink Floyd song. “ One of these days” you can tell.

I agree. This is one of the best 'structured' albums I have heard. The song progression itself is a story and journey. Only one other time have I run across an album that was so intentionally structured to tell a larger story.... Boston's album "Third Stage". It was recorded to sound and feel like the journey of a rocket, from it's preparation for launch, up to it's descent to its destination world. The songs themselves carry with them the feel of rocket thrusters, the hope of survival, the long journey there, and the wonders of a new home. The penultimate song on the album, "Can'tcha Say (You Believe In Me)" always brings tears to my eyes. If you ever get a chance I'd highly recommend it.... if not just for an appreciation of the sound engineering behind it.

This is from my personal top 10 of DM, I’ve been waiting for the moment when you react to this. Transcendent track, epic, sincere, the arrangement is one of the best they’ve ever had and the meaning, again, open to so many interpretations. I liked the one I read last year on one website: it said that the song is about someone who has finally taken over his or her own life and not being afraid to be who he or she really is without any fears regarding to what that true nature of one’s character is and what others think about it

The use of drugs and alcohol exploded during and after the Violation Tour. Such a great tour with a particular ambiance in it. Such a hypnotic song. Great way to end an album, I agree. The whole "sometimes" in the lyric adds that element of doubt about being clean, and the fact that getting clean from drugs is actually hard and you are often drawn back to it in spite of yourself. It's a fairly small part of the song but it says so much and the rest of the song pivots around it. They were so smart in how they wrote and produced songs

So, the last song on Violator. What was that sound? That was Alan being a genius. He famously nicked the bass line from a Pink Floyd song. He didn't sample it but it's fashioned after it. I always felt like it had a slightly Western feel, kind of a "Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." The meaning of the words could be anything, one of Martin's famously ambiguous lyrics, whatever bad stuff one gets into but then gets clean of. I see it as a sister song to "To Have and to Hold." Seph, I really encourage you to now go back and hear the album as a whole. You can hear how those odd interludes led into the next song, it's really brilliant! Everyone is going to list them, but don't forget the six(!) B-sides, Dangerous, Memphisto, Sibeling, Kalied (sound like collide), Happiest Girl, and Sea of Sin. There's another song that I lump in with the Violator era, called Death's Door, released the following year on the movie soundtrack, "Until the End of the World." It's the first time they did a commissioned song for somebody. It has samples of Martin's guitar playing from the Violator sessions. To me, Violator is the last "pure" Depeche album, at least of what I consider to be their first phase. Even though Alan's on "Songs of Faith..." to me, that's when Phase 2 started. So the title "Death's Door" is strangely fitting.

Nice reaction. I`m a lifelong DM fan and I get sth else from this track - which is magnificent, in my top 5 all time favourites from them. I think it is about addiction, yes, but rather from a place of tragical denial (hence the totally dark vibe of the production). Also, that ”sometimes”. Things are not yet resolved. He may be ”talking to himself” to keep going on. Ominous would be the word for this track. And risky, like walking on a rope above a chasm you could fall (back) into at any time.

The obvious interpretation of the song is having to do with drugs, but as usual there is likely a much deeper meaning. Likely has to do with personal growth, overcoming addictions of all sorts (drugs, sex, etc) but then regressing (when he says sometimes in the song) and starting the journey again.

You missed the whole point and the true genius of this song. Yes it’s drugs and no he isn’t clean, just the cleanest he’s been. Notice thealmos6 subliminal use of the word “ sometimes… it’s a genius song about real addiction, not a fairy tale.
