Could it be that Jesus worked here as a young man? Because Nazareth was so close to Sepphoris, and because Jesus was a Tekton (Greek for a construction worker of various types), Jesus and His earthy father, Joseph, undoubtedly worked here. Sepphoris was also the capital of the Galilee area during the time of Christ.

During the time of Jesus, because of a Jewish revolt, thousands of Jews were crucified here. Jesus likely used this example of what it meant to take up your cross and follow Him.
Location
1. Sepphoris is located about 4 miles (6 km.) northwest of Nazareth, about 14 miles (23 km.) from the Mediterranean Sea, and about 15 miles (25 km.) from the Sea of Galilee.
2. Because of its close proximity to Nazareth, it was easily accessible by Jesus and His father, Joseph.
Historical Background
1. The city started to grow during the 2nd Century BC under Greek rule.
2. Later, under Roman rule during the time of Christ, Herod Antipas (the son of Herod the Great) invested in it significantly and made it “the ornament of Galilee.” It was a sophisticated Roman city with all the luxuries of modern life at that time. It included a network of colonnaded paved streets, markets, residential houses, public buildings, bathhouses, a theater, and a synagogue.
3. Sepphoris rose to recognized status during the century before Christ because it was located right on one of the main trade routes linking Africa with Europe and Asia called "The Via Maris" (way of the sea). Therefore, it was a wealthy city.
4. It was also a military city guarded well by Roman troops.
5. Sepphoris was the capital of the Galilee area during the time of Christ.
6. In order to rebuild the city, Herod Antipas used a massive workforce.
7. Because Nazareth was so close to Sepphoris, and because Jesus was a Tekton (Greek for a construction worker of various types), Jesus and His father undoubtedly worked here.
8. So, in part, it’s also where Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man (Luke 2:52).
9. Because it was mainly a Jewish city, it was given its Hebrew name, Zippori, because it sits on a hilltop like a bird (Zippor).
10. Sepphoris is also known as the Mosaic City, as some of the best mosaics in all of Israel are found here. More than 40 mosaic floors reveal the bustling life of a Roman city and the luxury it afforded.
11. After Herod’s death in 4 BC, the Roman army put down a rebellion of Jewish rebels led by a man named Judas. These rebels numbering several thousand were killed; however, according to Josephus, 2,000 of them were kept alive to be crucified on its streets and close-by roads in the area. These mass crucifixions were carried out to instill fear in others who might consider rebelling against Roman rule.
12. Sepphoris did not join the Jewish rebellion in 66-70 AD and was therefore spared destruction.
13. After the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70, Sepphoris became a center of Jewish learning and seat of the Sanhedrin supreme court. The Mishnah, the first authoritative collection of Jewish oral law, was compiled here.
14. Sepphoris witnessed Byzantine, Crusader, and Ottoman rule in the centuries following.

2. Water source
3. Decumanus Street
4. Nile House with many mosaics

Sepphoris in the Bible
While Sepphoris is not mentioned in the Bible, it is significant for several reasons:
1. It was close-by to Nazareth and employed many carpenters. Because Jesus was a construction worker, it's very likely Jesus worked here before starting His earthly ministry.
2. After the death of Jesus’ earthly father, Joseph, Christ became the chief financial provider for His family. Christ was very responsible in caring for His family and expects us to do the same (2 Thess. 3:10-11).
3. It appears Jesus used references about this city in His teachings (Matt. 5:14-15). Sepphoris was certainly a city on a hill. In fact, that’s what the name of this city means.
The word for actor in Greek is “hypocrite.” Because these actors would walk the streets sounding their horns to advertise an upcoming event at the city theater, Jesus used them as an example of what not to do when giving to others and serving God.
4. Jesus likely used the example of the mass crucifixion carried out by the Romans against the Jewish revolt here to teach about the cost of being His disciple (Mark 8:34-38).

I want to make it very clear that Joseph was Jesus' earthy father, and nothing more. He was not Jesus divine father. I made a couple of references to Joseph as Jesus father, I should have said "earthly father."

HolyLandSite, You did fine in referring to Joseph as Jesus' father. Everyone who is honestly trying to understand you will see that you are referring to his earthly side. Jesus was 100% divine, and 100% human. Also, "father" implies more than just who physically impregnates a woman. It also implies the one who is the male parent, and Joseph is definitely referrred to as a "parent" of Jesus.

@@statutesofthelord He was made flesh. The person he was and is makes him the Son of GOD, and GOD with us, and GOD in the flesh. The evils that entered the early church and the first few centuries after Christ's ascension doted about words, and asked foolish questions that caused division. See 1 Tim 6.4 & 2 Tim 2.23. He did not take on him the nature of Angels but of the seed of Abraham, like his brethren. Jesus Christ had sin in his flesh. And everyone, most Christians miss the whole point of HIS CROSS. They miss the whole point. Christ had sin in his flesh and by not sinning throughout his whole life or (not knowing sin/ not knowing evil) until his death, he destroyed the works of the devil in that he triumphed over it. Spoiling it, or making the cross his as well as everything in heaven and in earth, he made an example for those who would believe on him after. This fully human, fully divine is a nonsense really because the New Testament speaks against it. He is wholly divine. What cannot the divine have flesh and blood? who are we to question divinity? But I Know this, divinity has no sin. He does not have sin in himself now, and John was referring to his present time when Christ had already ascended to God being without sin. Again, the author of the epistle to the Hebrews writes, So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. Brother beloved of the Lord, the devil has divided the church thoroughly, and we are as if we have not been. If I was there back then I would have spoken against all sects for being disjointed and divided just as St Paul did. But now I am so worn out by it all just like St Daniel spoke of the Beast and what he would do to ware out the saints. But knowing the truth, which is the simplicity of Christ - taking the Word for what it is and not doing that for the world and its institutions, an enjoyable fruit of spirit ensues. This gives me peace in him knowing that I am able to overcome and walk in his footsteps. I ask that you consider my words and go over those passages and find that although Christ is incorruptible and immortal now, once he was just like us, but was so much greater than us in that he conquered. He was the King of Glory, He was the King of Peace. He was the rightful ruler of Israel, and the Champion of Grace. Such grace is attainable through the truth. Let us not diminish his work on earth whether by ignorance or deceit. He is the King of Glory, He is the King of Peace. He is the rightful ruler of Israel, and is the Champion of Grace. May God bless you.

Please pray for me. Prayers are all I need and WANT. I’m a single mom, my husband passed away years ago, I’m all alone. I’m struggling to provide for my children. I feel like a failure. But no matter what I will keep faith in Jesus. I can’t seem to get back on my feet. I lost my job for declining the vaccine. I declined due to my health conditions. I suffer from lupus, and heart disease. I’m now waitressing and so thankful to be working but I’m not making nearly enough to get by. I have two beautiful sons both are autistic. I’m overwhelmed because they require so much from me. I recently started homeschooling them because they were having so many issues including bullying. With homeschooling them my hours to work are now limited. Every month is a struggle to not end up on the streets with my boys. I’m so tired of not being able to afford simple things like groceries. But I know God will provide. He has this far. Jesus hear my prayers. I have so much love for you. I know you will carry me through this difficult journey. All Praise to THE MOST HIGH!

Never having heard of Sepphoris before, this was very interesting. Thank you for covering even the out-of-the-way places, and while there is no hard evidence of Jesus' having worked there, you make good observations that it is highly likely that Jesus went there and perhaps even worked there. One question, why didn't Jesus get some of his disciples from Sepphoris or Nazareth?

It was the capital of Galilee and it was a Greco-Roman city. In 4 bc Herod the Great died and there were rebellions all over. It is referred to in the bible. Joseph brought the family back from Egypt because as the angel told him, those who sought to kill the child were dead. Joseph went around Jerusalem because of the unrest. The family went to their home in Nazareth. From Nazareth you could see Sephoris. They rebelled and the Romans took the city back and made an example of Sephoris by crucifying large numbers of people outside the walls of Sephoris. The holy family came home to this. The child saw crucifixion in person. He knew exactly what he would suffer. The city had been destroyed and had to be rebuilt. Jesus and Joseph were builders, not carpenters. The word translated as carpenter actually was builder. Wood was scarce and most building was done with stone. It is certain, in my mind, Jesus spoke at least 3 languages, including Greek, which was the common language through out the entire world at that time. It was the language of commerce.
