Mets Classics

Күн бұрын

With the season on the line, the Mets take on the Marlins in game 161 in front of 54,675 at Shea Stadium. The Mets entered the game 1 behind the Phillies for the Eastern division crown.
John Maine takes the hill for the Mets. In one of the best pitching performances in Met history, Maine strikes out 14, going 7 and 2/3s innings. Not until Paul Hoover's infield single with 2 out and 2 strikes in the 8th, will Maine give up a hit.
Offensively, the Mets put up 19 hits and 13 runs. Lastings Milledge in his second to final game as a Met, hits 2 homeruns, knocking in 3.
Besides Maine's pitching performance, this game will be remembered for the on field brawl between Jose Reyes and Miguel Olivo with an elderly Sandy Alomar Sr. getting caught in the crossfire. The man who replaces Olivo after he's ejected? Paul Hoover.
Gary, Keith and Ron on the call for SNY.
Highlights:
10:52 - Castro with a perfect throw
51:10 - Milledge homers, the rout is on
55:55 - Reyes once again fails to run and the fans let him know
1:20:56 - Maine stikes out his 10th to end the 5th
1:22:33 - Milledge hits his second homer of the day
1:26:42 - Garcia throws behind Castillo in a 9-0 game, and the benches clear for the first time
1:31:55 - Olivo attacks Reyes during a pitching change and the benches clear again
2:18:59 - Hoover's infield hit, then Maine's exit
2:39:06 - Muniz closes it out
Note: I attended this game and what energy we walked out of the stadium with that afternoon. The Mets showed incredible heart on this sunny Saturday. The stadium roared. We were riding high after not only dismantling the Marlins, but the energy from the fight between Reyes and Olivo. Nobody left the stadium that day expecting what was to come.

Had Reyes not struggle in the final two weeks of 2007, and the Mets made the postseason in 2007, I think both Reyes and Wright were gonna be co-NL-MVP in 2007

Managing has changed so much as well. Just watching back some of these old games and you see pitchers remaining in games in situations where they’d be removed today.

Jon Maine came close to a No-hitter in this game before it was broken up on a two-out 8th inning infield hit by the Marlins #3 catcher Paul Hoover. Nonetheless, the Mets won the game in a laugher, 13-0 while the Phillies finally lost one, 4-2, to the Nats. With a day to go, the NL East was tied. No need to relive the next day for obvious reasons.

There were two bench-clearing incidents in the fifth inning. At first glance, the Mets needed this brawl as they lost five straight against teams you should beat. But a fight shouldn't occur when you're UP 9-0 against a team that has conceded the game. And you have to wonder if the Marlins took out THEIR frustrations on Tom Glavine the next days that had the Fish satisfied---and the Phillies joyous.
@hmhm856
@hmhm856 Жыл бұрын
Glavine was garbage in his previous two starts before the game 162 start. (Marlins, Nationals). So Glavine was getting smacked on game 162 against the Marlins regardless if there was no drama in today's game 161 Miguel Olivo (Marlins catcher) was the one who ordered the hit by pitch to Castillo. Olivo was a nutcase throughout his career. Always starting fights, altercations, biting ears. Im surprised that MLB never banned him for life. What ticked the Marlins off was Lastings Milledge doing celebratory dances when the Mets already had a huge lead.

That 5th inning scuffle woke up the Marlins and unfortunately gave the Mets a beating in game #162. I was there for this game and the next day. Still till this date as a Mets fan it crushed my spirit.
@hmhm856
@hmhm856 5 ай бұрын
Whether there was a scuffle today or not, Mets were not beating the Marlins in game 162, mainly because Tom Glavine was horrendous in his last two outings before game 162 (one of those two horrendous outings was against the Marlins the previous week in Florida where the Marlins got 11 hits off Glavine in just 5 innings) And then Glavine was horrendous again in this third consecutive outing in game 162

1998 actually was their first season of collapse for the Mets. And then they almost collapsed in 1999 but managed to get in the postseason in the end. And then the heartbreak against the Braves in two games in 2001 after almost making a sensational comeback to win the division As for 1998: In 1998, Entering the final week of the season, the Mets had a 1 game lead over the Cubs in the NL Wild Card and the Mets had a 3 game lead over the Giants in the NL Wild Card. Well, Mets got 2-game-swept at Shea against the Expos, and then the Mets got 3-game-swept in Atlanta, losing all 5 games of the final week. Cubs and Giants would then play in a game 163 (won by the Cubs) for the NL Wild Card in Wrigley Field.

I just noticed that Iin the 7th inning right before Ramon Castro’s homer, the broadcasters showed footage of Millege celebrating emphatically after hitting his 2nd homer, before he entered the dugout. They think that ticked the Marlins off since they were already getting blown out.
