Magnificent! The drone footage really shows how immense the mill buildings are at Kennicott. The Gilahina Trestle is truly amazing as is the entire construction of the railroad tracks to the mine. Just because the trestle is so famous, here is a quote from The Historical Markers Database: "To negotiate the rugged Alaskan landscape, wooden trestles were common along the entire Copper River & Northwestern Railway. A total of 273 wooden trestles were constructed, spanning over thirty miles. The Gilahina would be the largest at 90 feet tall and 880 feet long. Over one half million board feet of lumber would be required. Crews wasted no time. The challenge of constructing the trestle over the Gilahina turned out to be the weather. In January 1911 the thermometer sank all the way to -67° F. The bitter cold lasted through the entire construction of the Gilahina Trestle. As winter temperatures plummeted, workers bundled up against the piercing chill of winter. Carpenters struggled with timbers that split and cracked from the cold. It was impossible to drive pilings into the frozen ground. Holes had to be blasted to anchor the pilings. In spite of the terrible working conditions, skilled workers rose to the challenge and the Gilahina Trestle was completed in just eight days! On January 28, 1911 the first train crossed, carrying construction supplies to continue the work." You saw it in person, can you imagine what it was like to build that trestle in 8 DAYS! And in the dead of winter with a severe cold snap? I can't even begin to picture the working conditions with the clothing they had then and everything done with basic hand tools. Turning half a million board ft of timber into a 90 ft high, 880 ft long train trestle. We are wimps now! Thanks for another most excellent video. James in Alaska

Wow James, I had no idea all of this information about the Gilahina Trestle, and I really wish I had known when I was making the video so we could've talked about it or put in little facts about it... Geez, that is quite some story. But at least you were able to share it with us here on the channel. Looking at the Trestle today, I couldn't imagine a train ever going on it. I would have peed myself if I had been on that first train. Obviously it looks way more rickety now, but I'm not sure I would've ever trusted it even in the beginning. And only 8 days of work?! The engineering of our ancestors is beyond what most people could even understand today. Building A mine and manufacturing it at that time in that era without the equipment we have to day is mine blowing. I'm glad your hubby is feeling better it's miserable being sick like that. My family just got over the stomach flu we are farmers here in Wisconsin.

Great video guys. McCarthy & Kennicott Mine are some of my favorite places in Alaska. Too bad Tim was sick and you didn’t take the tour. Seeing how that thing worked and didn’t fall apart, being a wood structure, is amazing.

Yes, those copper mines were unbelievable, and the weird thing is, having had that extra time camping there due to my sickness really gave us the pause to want to explore the mines more. We were in such a rush before... we would've visited the mines, but it might not have sunk in in the same way. Silver lining I suppose. Oh yeah, and Lethal Weapon, I like your taste! Alaskan rider here..thoroughly enjoyed the virtual ride along with you two through areas I’ve been many times..When asked, I don’t recommend Alaskan bike journeys in September but as you found out, it is doable with the right gear and equipment. That fresh snow up high in the mountains is what we call “termination dust” and signals the arrival of night freezes and icy roads in the shady spots.. but riders gotta ride so many of us stretch it out anyway, some through the winter just to say they did..crazy Alaskan-Americans on bikes.. 😜

We definitely got lucky with the weather! We were nervous because we had heard so many similar stories of people spending 30 days in Alaska and it rained for 20 of those days. Thanks for riding along with us. It is a beautiful State to explore given enough time and ‘nice’ weather. We had our fair share of rain, but even that seemed to add to the magic of the scenery!

@@2UpAndOverloaded Glad you got a taste of Alaska...As I watched, I was thinking "Wait! You just passed..." Sooooo many epic side adventures on the path you took...but you were wise to boogie south when you did..My last ride was in August, coming up from Lewiston ID and was 5 days/4 night, about 75% in the rain of various intensities but I was on a classic Goldwing I was delivering to Homer so I never did get uncomfortably cold or wet even without heated gear. Last day on that trip was Tok to Homer and about 45% of that leg was monsoon style rain but I arrived dry and ready to turn around and head back down the AlCan with no hesitation..That journey burns into your memory in a way that will constantly refresh your enthusiasm for life on a bike! OnOn!

Glad you were feeling better. Awesome drone footage, especially of the trestle , an unusual view. I also like the mix of music, nice choices and editing. I started following y'all about when you entered Alaska, now I'm backtracking to some of your earlier excursions. Good stuff. You handle crappy weather better than I do. I'm sure quality gear makes it a bit easier but still. I know 32 degree rain sucks. Enjoy your coffee and tea, and safe travels.

Thank you Troy! It's funny, because in the beginning of our motorcycle riding days, we always told people that we were "fair weather riders only." Things have definitely changed, and I think some of that is just having gone through so much bad weather, it doesn't much faze us anymore. That being said, waterproof gear is essential. We started off with just plastic rain covers over our other gear. We've even gone to garbage bags before. Sometimes you have to be a little creative! Anyway, thanks so much for commenting on the drone footage you liked and the music choices as well. As the editor (Marisa), I appreciate your comments. Thank you!

the copper mine wooden structures plus the red color makes the whole scene look like a settlement right from an apocalypto scifi movie .grand there are rennovations been done to bring it back to life, the gilahina trestle was my favourite part on this one and i love the edits and the music...to be honest the idea of 2UP didn't really settle well with me when i started watching your videos since i am a solo rider...but the 2 of you being together and sharing every moment of every adventure and then narrating it to us on screen is what makes this channel unique...hope you continue gathering more subcribers as time goes by so that this content can reach more people 1st hand...i enoyed alaska onscreen with you guys hope i get to tour north america some day since i am still young...waterproof and hearted gear doesn't come cheap but it's a worth investment for a serious ADV rider...tuned for your next episodes😊

@@2UpAndOverloaded yeah i am from Africa a Kenyan by birth in fact...i have travelled in most of africa's tropics and sub sahara...uganda,tanzania rwanda,congo,drc,egypt,ethiopia etc.... my work allows me to move around pletty easily since i am in telco...i have had several offers to move to the US maybe work there for some time...and have infact worked with cisco and aruba engineers but i am still in my mid twenties and love it here in Africa...i might consider visiting the US as a tourist not an engineer😀....most africans don't do that though but i like it that everything in the US is BIG like seriously big i am 163cm tall at 115 pounds...and i once visited Richardson texas to do my cisco lab back in 2019 and us people are big but friendly would wish to see more of the US

I live in Alaska so have really enjoyed your Alaska adventures. I have also ridden through Canada to the lower 48 and back several times so look forward to seeing that adventure as well. Just as a FYI I ride all year long in Alaska. In the winter I just switch from my bike to my trike with studded tires and keep going. I have ridden in temps as cold as minus 20f. Thank God for heated gear and fur hats. I wish I had a way to show you a couple of pictures of what riding in the winter looks like here. I do have a tiktok account with a few videos showing a little bit of what winter riding in Alaska is like. It is tzooe. Stay safe and I look forward to seeing more of your adventures.

Wow, this is incredible that you ride in the winter up in Alaska!! You know, I've never even heard of such a thing. Though I guess I have heard of people outfitting their motorcycles with snowmobile-type treads but... Some serious respect is owe to you. And here we are complaining about the cold in the beginning of September like we're turning to icicles 🥶. It’s just the mosquitoes that are the worst! We couldn’t even stop to have an early night because we had to hide in our tent to avoid being drained!

Truly loving your journey even though it always reminds me that Southern Alaska would have been more to my liking during my moto Alaska tour. I can hope for "next time" but probably too old for that. So your journey has been great.

Thank you for sharing. Even if we rode to Alaska ten times though, we wouldn't be able to ever see it all. There are always new roads being built, new places to see, rides that you want to redo because they were just rainy and awful... The journey will never be complete. So I'm glad that you're able to experience our trip as well as having your incredible memories of your own adventure to look back on. And you get to experience southern Alaska virtually without being cold (or harassed by mosquitoes, ha!). That's pretty nice too. So thank you again, Richard, for watching and commenting!

That mine is an amazing piece of history and should be saved. My wife and I are restoring out little Victorian house and it is a ton of work. I see that mine and think, " oh man, that's gonna take a lot of people, a lot of time and a lot of cash." Many of the buildings have already collapsed so I really hope then can get going quickly. And talking about the 80's. Maybe there were some bad movies, but there were some greats, and I still enjoy the music of my youth. You guys missed a good decade for sure🙂! And the drone shots, wow. I guess I'll have to stop watching you guys on my little laptop and start watching on the big HDTV.

What kind of drone do you use?

Hi Laurie. We use a DJI Mini 2. It is very small, but also very basic (and one of the most affordable options out there). So far we love it, but we did almost crash it once because it doesn't have very good sensors. But we need something super small, and this one fit our budget, and the images are great! So we are happy with it. Thank you for watching and asking 😀!
