My uncle dug a large hole in the ground, poured a concrete cap with wire in it and a hole for a lid to fit in by gravity within the V shape back about 1960. My brother was living there about 1975 when his horse waled over it and it collapsed. It took us about 5 hours to manually dig down to the point we could get the horse out. It was shivering (summer time) and had a vet visit. Survived! The tank was never pumped. Had an unknown lateral field?... not sure.

I'm a plumber in new residential & commercial construction for past 18 years & installed septic systems when i was younger in the 80's & 90's. My 60 y/o condo is on a slab & i'v been having clog issues for 8 yrs. I pull my toilet & snake it which USUALLY clears it. Today it did not work. I DUG & found the 4" cast iron (C.I.) inlet pipe to the 1000 gal. 1950's(?) tank. It had two 4" C.I. 45's as it entered the tank.Above it an access cover WITH a 3 SIDED BAFFLE attached to LID/COVER. I pulled the baffle cover & found the CLOG right there. 3 gallons of sludge CLOG attached to the baffle i pulled out.

But it’s a drain field from the 50s, it was at the end of its life anyway. To perform that well even without maintenance is incredible. But for those with new systems, it’s definitely important to get it pumped regularly to make sure it has a chance of lasting as long as this one did.

My last house was built in 47 and we sold it last year. During the septic inspection for our sale, which was done by a family member, we learned the lids were under our driveway. A few hours worth of hard work later it was revealed that we had a terra cotta septic system that seemingly has never been opened or cleaned. Full to the brim. We had it pumped and cleaned, sold the house to a family friend. 9 months later the leach field failed. 😑

Just had the original 1959 septic pumped on a home I'm about to close on. The tank is buried over 3ft deep and I asked the company that did the pumping about having a riser installed. I was told that since the tank is a "homemade" tank, it may be difficult to find a riser that will fit properly and since it's buried that deep, adding a riser is not recommended as it may cause more stress on the aged tank. I'm very disappointed as I don't like that my yard will need to be dug up every 6yrs or so to have it pumped.

That's my situation. 1952 septic tank and the lid/port is 3'-4' deep and too irregular for a riser. So, I I know exactly where the port is and can dig a hole the length of my arm and just big enough around to pull the small lid out. My neighbor has the same system and paid to have the top of the tank completely dug out, the two slabs covering it removed, and a new one piece concrete cover custom fabricated to fit over the tank. The new cover has the two modern port holes and she had risers connected. She wouldn't say what she paid. I use a different septic company and asked their thoughts and they said for the cost and trouble of having a custom top fabricated over a 70 year old tank, you might as well pay to replace the entire tank. So, I'm considering it.
@Mixdplate
@Mixdplate 2 ай бұрын
@@jbrian53 Well, my dilemma was solved when the septic tank collapsed at the beginning of the year. Cost me $4500 for new concrete tank with 2 risers. Plus another $2500 to clean up, re-grade, and seed the yard after. 😫
@jbrian53
@jbrian53 2 ай бұрын
@@Mixdplate Did they remove the old one and some additional dirt to fit in a new one, or did you crush and fill the old one and have a new one put nearby? Also, with it buried so deep how did you know the old one collapsed? Was it the lid? I hope nobody was standing over it! The peace of mind knowing it's not going to collapse (or fail in some other way) must make the expense a bit more tolerable.
