One main thing about Sepultura that George was spot on about when he says it's very street-raw is that Sepultura came from a large city in Brazil and played heavy music as a reaction to the outright corruption they lived through that ranged from everything to crooked cops to government officials to church clergy. They were a protest band, and their early music is almost too raw for that exact reason. Kudos to George for recognizing that!
@mvunit3
@mvunit3 4 жыл бұрын
Igor Cavalera (brother of the former vocalist/rhythm guitarist Max Cavalera) the Drummer, was a bit more technical (before "Roots"), and the violent riffage is what put Sepultura on the map, especially for me on this album. Again, imagine thousands of longhairs headbanging and starting a tornado in the slam-pit! They were from a pretty rough city in Brazil, so it reflects in the sound and lyrics. There is a LOT of "polished" Thrash too Ryan, they usually have a more Progressive take on Thrash too (like early Annihilator), a bit more complex, and are more underground or very obscure. George was sure gettin' into it though! "No Mercy" . . . If you thought Inner Self is chaotic, listen to the title track of "Arise" (my fave track), that is one dangerous slam-pit! Also, it took me a few months to get into Sepultura, when my younger brother introduced this album to me after its release. It was yet another step into Extreme Metal that I got used to, and wanted to explore further. There are MUCH more "chaotic"/complex bands out there - this song is actually pretty tame. But we Metalheads had to start somewhere to get used to the brutality, abrupt changes and complexities. . . . But I HOPE both you guys keep going, keep discovering and just taking it all in and coming to your own conclusions. But let's scare Ryan even further ;D: From Germany; *Kreator* - "Betrayer", ""Extreme Aggression", "As the Sun Burns Red", for a reaction? For the more Progressive (including polished), and complex Thrash, Death Metal and more . . . kzfaq.info/sun/PL2DU3TBNutEdtiYql5HxhzIxzuFIPcXS9 \m/

One thing that makes "raw" bands like Sepultura more understandable is knowing the history of rock/metal. Rock in the 70s split into two camps with polar opposite aesthetic philosophies: prog wanted to bring sophistication to rock, and punk wanted to keep things raw, basic, and primal. Thrash began as a combination of punk's raw speed and aggression with the growing compositional complexity of bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. That push-pull between fans who liked the rawness/aggression and fans who liked the compositional complexity is a constant one in metal. I think you guys, like most, appreciate the middle ground. You tend not to like stuff that's just all raw aggression (like this), nor stuff that's all about complexity/sophistication (like Metropolis Pt. 1). Perhaps a big part of Metallica's success is precisely that they struck a perfect middle ground between both; they could be raw, heavy, fast, but they would also temper that with greater melodicism, softer passages, groovier sections, even classical or bluesy touches. This way, neither element outstayed their welcome, and even had greater impact when one came on the heels of the other.

George was dead on when he compared this to pure roots rap music. The band spoke about the real threat of being shot on a daily basis. They have friends and family that had been shot. There was also a lot of discontent with the Brazilian government at the time when they were making these records, so all this came out in their music. It also has a very raw production because this was limit of the studio they were in at the time, but I think it adds to the aggression. They said that their music and the band was a way for them to escape the despair they experienced on a daily basis in their Brazilian neighbourhood.

To me personally, it doesn't get any heavier than early Sepultura, and the talent with the original lineup remains incomparable. They were absolute mad men together. Yes, this is pure uncompromised Thrash. I'm a seasoned fan of the genre, but the more I dive into it, the more I question the Big Four. Side note: Sepultura started adding more groove elements with their next album Arise. Later records, Chaos AD and Roots went down a more experimental route, while staying true to their sound. Like George said, it’s just so heavy in a visceral, primal way that’s hard to find. Yet it also has some rockin’ punkish groove and some pockets of melody to it that in my opinion also make it eminently listenable. That’s why I was surprised Ryan didn’t get into it a little bit since he liked Dead Embryonic Cells. But I appreciate the honest first impression. Personally, I have awesome memories of blasting this while walking down the street on cold nights as a rebellious teenager. @@luisamoa2500 Yep. I can appreciate the instrumentation in some heavier stuff but let's face it, death metal isn't timeless. Gojira is probably the closest thing to being timeless in that type of genre. A big reason for that is because you can understand what they're saying, even in their heavy stuff and they also have songs with clean vocals. Just my opinion, of course.

I think with a lot of metal you have to see it in the context of its time too. I was a teen when these guys blasted onto the scene in 1989 and they weren't much older than me, lol. There was nothing remotely like them in England, where I live, or even the US at the time I think. Sure there were fast thrash and death metal bands, but these guys had complicated, heavily intricate and melodic music, heavily-accented English and a raw Brazilian mystique. Because they represented the Brazil that few see - esp. in the 1980s - when all you got was images of tourists playing beachball on Copacabana, carnivals or bikini-clad women. These were the street kids like us - growing up with not much, just football, old bikes and music. So they were really special to me. I think these early days were their best times tbh. They gelled, there was no interband fighting and splits (that came much later). They had 'Schizophrenia' (1987) and 'Morbid Visions' (1986) out on vinyl before this album. But it was this one that really propelled them onto the international scene.

🇧🇷 As a brazilian, something I just realized is that I think these guys spoke some pretty good English for their time. Back in 1989, just a few brazilians spoke English, and they didn't know it that well. I think it's kind of surprising to hear lyrics like "inner self" and "filfthy ways" (expressions which are not obvious to non native speakers) from some brazilian guys in the 80's, when there was no Google translate or online dictionaries.

I partly agree.... I believe that once they went into playing in english, they have to do it as good as a native speaker would.... For us brasilians, songs in english, even when we understand english, we care most about the rhytm more than the lyrics itself. For them native speakers, maybe the lyrics sounds raw or even childish. For sure, nowadays sepultura would work far better on this song lyrics. Id love to know what a gringo would say after listening to bestial devastation, troops of doom.... 😄

I think Sepultura influenced death metal more than the other way around. They were at their rawest when they begin, and there were no death metal bands at the time, they were the pioneers (of something nowadays known as war metal, to be fully precise). It makes more sense to say that they were influenced by thrash, later, when Andreas Kisser entered the band and they created their death/thrash sound.
@RafitoOoO
@RafitoOoO Жыл бұрын
Sepultura was one of the first bands doing that, they influenced Death not the other day around. They can also be considered among the first wave of black metal as well, even the first singer from Sepultura left the band to form Sarcófago, one of the first Black Metal bands, they were the first ones doing corpse paint. These guys were WAY ahead of the curve.

@@YannickTMessiah You're right, Sepultura were influenced by thrash bands, like Metallica and Slayer, and bands that people nowadays would describe as proto-black metal or proto-death metal like Venom, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost and Possessed. This album is about Brazilian Poverty. 9:55 for me is exactly how I feel with some bands that are other wise held as Greats. I think the song means the Inner Self of those who live in Poverty and how some become selfish, or tread the wrong path due to circumstance. This is rebellious for Brazilians. These dudes lived in the slums and they were pissed off at it. This is very similar to Hip Hop in this regard. It's a lot more cryptic and at time more direct, but it's the same idea. Can't go wrong with some DH. I'd recommend Aborticide or 44 caliber brain surgery.

Ryan, I give you so much credit for simply being objective enough to listen and give it a shot. You looked like you wanted to enjoy it but just couldn't really get into it. But that's cool because it's honest. and George....every one of Lost in Vegas reviews I've seen, you kill me. I love your analogies and sense of humor. Frickin' adorbs! You guys are DA BEST!!! much love and respect to both of you

I enjoyed this. The high school analogy was hilarious. I saw them play in Birmingham UK and they got off the bus attacking us with water pistols!! The band are from Sao Paolo in Brazil and their music was borne out of their lives growing up in the City.

Cavalera's brothers and Paulo Jr. (bass) are from Minas Gerais. Andreas Kisser (guitarrist) was raised in São Paulo. The band itself stablished and gained success playing in Sao Paulo scene...specially ABC cities

This is my favorite thrash band ever and as good as it gets imo. I’m glad you guys were able to keep an open mind towards some other genres of music. Consider reviewing Testament - Disciples Of The Watch

It's perfectly fine to not like this. This is early thrash, old school 80's. It's raw, heavy and speed. I personally love this. It's exactly my type of thrash. And it's only 1 month older than myself. I really appreciate your open view! Videos like this actually keep thrash alive!
