Way cool! Another option for reducing cable flair. CO, work the first row by purling, then work the increases in the second row creating a stockinette-smoother edge. In your "Cable Flare Reduction Cast On" video the increases are worked in the first row just after the CO creating a slightly purl-bumpy edge. Either edge is fine. I look forward to experimenting and I'm interested in hearing if there are other reasons to choose one method over the other (besides appearance).

Excellent comment. This particular method in this video is best when the cast on edge will be involved in seaming. If the edge will be the finished edge, the other method is best.

This was well explained. I continue to be amazed by all the techniques you are teaching us. I am not sure when to use this method? Is this to start cables instead of using a cable hook to transpose the stitches to make a cable? Do they look all that different? Also you ended up increasing the number of stitches and therefore the width of the fabric. What is the best way to factor that into a pattern we are following? Thank you, Suzanne, for sharing your expertise!

This is used to compensate for the extra fabric that cables require. If you purchase my Cable Pillow Tutorial from Ravelry or Loveknitting, I teach you all of these things while you make a cable pillow. Just look for Cable Pillow Tutorial by Suzanne Bryan, either on Ravelry or on LoveKnitting. It is $7.50.

Oh, dear! I think I just realized that you would only do the Sequential Lifted Increases once to get to the proper number of stitches for the cables and thereafter just work the cable crosses where needed. Told you I was confused!

@@SuzanneBryan I'm embarrassed that I got that wrong, but I looked at the finished pattern and said to myself, "Oh, there's another one. How do I get there?" I get so caught up in the process that I sometimes lose sight of the big picture. There is just so much to learn here that I'm a bit overwhelmed on how to put it all together and, more importantly, how to use it on other projects. Your videos are so very good and I repeat them a lot. I think I'm about to wear this one out! Thank you for your help.

This is so very very clever!! It makes me wonder if there is a consistent math that goes with cables. Cables like many other knitted fabrics draw in. I wonder if it is a consistent draw from various patterns or not. Everyone's knitting has different quirks and tensions... but is the structure of cables consistent enough for it to be predictable?
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 5 жыл бұрын
Not really, although I start with counting how many stitches are crossed over each other horizontally across the area and add anywhere from 50 - 100% of those stitches into the fabric. That will give you a starting point. You will need to swatch. Thank you and happy knitting.

Suzanne, thank you for sharing your knowledge! I have a question, what kind of increase would you suggest for multiple increases across a row? With no holes. Thank you

It depends on the look you desire. Any of them would work.

I noticed that when you started knitting at the beginning of the video that you did not start knitting into the cast on row, but had done a setup row so that the stitches you'll be working are p2, k2, p2, k4, p2, k2, p2. Is this (always) necessary so that you'll have the purl bumps in the right place for working the increases? Is there a rule of thumb about this for sequential lifted increases?

You got it.

I'm confused about how to work up to the next row with the sequential lifted increases. If you don't delete 2 stitches on the side cables and 4 stitches on the staghorn cable somewhere, like in the row before doing the next cable crossing, your work is going to get wider and wider. Is that the proper row for the decreases and are they directional (right and left)?

You got it.

On the cable panel, those first LLIs are done with stitches that were purled, not knitted as you have in your video. Does that make a difference?
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 5 жыл бұрын
Row 1 is a WS row, row 2 where the increases are, is a RS row.
