Thanks for another great demo/walkthrough, Bo. This little synth sounds GREAT!!! Its limitations are not really deal-breakers for anybody who is just looking for that Sequential/Dave Smith sound without spending a whole ton of money. It can do so many good things sonically and musically. It's about the most "vibey" little instrument I've seen/heard for around $1300 USD.

@@middaymeds You're right that almost any synth (especially subtractive) is good for synthwave music. But the design features, capabilities and filters of some of them, in my opinion, are better suited for classic retro sound. In addition, you hardly want to use granular synthesis or more exotic types of synthesis specifically for synthwave (at least until you are going to experiment).

Great demo man! The sound you played at 03:45 (that you said you really liked) sounded familiar to me, then I realized it was one of my presets haha. Really glad you enjoyed it. I believe I used "voice spread" as a mod source to create a randomness to every voice - I love that kind of stuff. :) I don't have a Take 5 right now (sent the unit I had back to Sequential) but I'm definitely gonna pick one up soon, such an awesome and inspiring little synth.

Great demo! I used to own a Mopho X4. It sounded great, as does this one, but the process of programming a sound felt kinda clumsy to me (though I know lots of folks feel differently), and I eventually sold it. It's interesting to see how the take 5 both differs and resembles the X4!

I have the X4. I got it around 2013 when there was very few analog poly options, let alone affordable. I paid £1,000. I no longer want it, but they sell for around £400 these days as there are so many incredible affordable options out there like the take 5. Dave Smith makes great stuff

@@BoBeats If you're wanting more LFOs + envelopes though, a better sequencer, and generally deeper and more detailed sound design options... the Pro 3 (or Pro 2 or Prophet 12) would be a pretty obvious next step. @Davide_LP 2 жыл бұрын
I hear something like a progressive cutoff of high frequencies, how does he achieve it?
@GeorgeL909
@GeorgeL909 2 жыл бұрын
@@Davide_LP it's most likely by having the envelope routed to the low pass filter, where it decays into a lower sustained state if the initial note is held down. Since he's playing in a unison monophonic mode, the synth registers the whole thing phrase as one note trigger, so long as the previous note is held down. So it allows the low pass filter to gradually decay from its open state into its lower sustain state. The lower sustain state cuts off more of the high end frequencies, so if the decay is long enough, it will sound like a gradual filtering of the high end that will only restart if the notes are let go of altogether and a new note is then pressed. That's my interpretation of what's going on 🤷‍♂️ unless I totally misunderstood the question. It''s a great example of why a filter envelope is so useful in sound design.

Everyone has things they like or dislike about synths, or a certain sound that they either vibe off of or not. All I can say is I’m really liking the way this sounds. I’m super impressed with it to be honest. I have enough gear to where I don’t need anything else, but I may sell something to make room for the Take 5. When I first saw rumors of this synth, I was extremely excited because I thought it was a fully polyphonic Pro 3, which is a MONSTER. That would be a synth to rule all others, IMO. Shame they cut out some of those major features like the multiple filter options (the OB6 filter especially!) and the sequencer. Still, seems like a great synth especially at that price point! Cobalt is virtual analog, way less direct control.
@MistyMusicStudio

@@tijmen1949 I suppose that depends on what you’re looking to control. Certainly the cobalt offers more direct control over LFO 3 lol

Why would the price tag be a con because synths like the Cobalt 8 have 3 LFO's? It's much more expensive to implement LFO's & modulation into a fully analogue synth with voltage controlled tuning than it is with a Virtual Analogue like the Cobalt 8, on a virtual synth like that, it's only down to DSP power, and you can have as many LFO's/Oscillators etc as you want. In an analogue unit, each extra piece requires extra components, which require extra space etc etc.

@@RoHen-pw5ol Right, but what it amounts to is still that this prohibitively expensive synth falls short on features compared to other synths below it’s price range. Don’t get me wrong, I think the pros outweigh the cons by a lot, but I do think that’s one of them. Most analog synths besides Behringer have had this drawback discussed, I think

Seems like a nice synth..I'd need a Take 10 though :)

seems like a great synth for the price. was thinking to maybe add to my rev2, but i don't think i will. think there's a bit too much overlap and the p5 filter isn't winning me over THAT much. if i had no poly yet, i would for sure consider this as #1 if i couldn't afford the rev2. no idea what people are so complainy about. sounds great and presets always sound corny.

Are you actually gonna buy/ keep it? What Polys do you have in the studio right now ?

Funny to hear your complaints.. totally valid.. But it sounds like someone who has never had a sequential.. That sequencer is the same one used in them all.. Besides the mono synth's they make.. And having two independent lfo's is a big, big, step up from the more expensive (like more then twice) poly synth's they make.. they have a option too turn one of the two oscillators into a second lfo..lol. You don't get a sequential because of it's long list of features.. it is all about the sound and immediacy.. nothing should require much thought of button presses.. that is the philosophy of Dave Smith..

Their mono synth sequencer is really nice though, and vastly more capable than this simplified one. It's complex enough that it can only really be compared to a Wavestate... which, not coincidentally, is also based on Dave Smith's work. The multi-lane multi-pattern modulation sequencer really adds a lot of useful capabilities. Like, instead of 4 mod sources (2 LFOs and 2 envelopes), it's more like 20 (3 LFOs + 4 envelopes + 13 lanes).

Could be my first Sequential as well.

Interesting you said Peak, Prologue and REV-2. I have all of those and was still thinking of getting this. My main reason would be I don't own any Sequential VCO poly. Technically, I don't own ANY Sequential poly as my REV-2 was one of the last of the DSi ones, but we all know that's just a bit of white paint on the case. Extra level of complexity is do I get this or the extra 8 voices for my REV-2.... Decisions, decisions, decisions....

Yeah. They are alternatives and not really similar in sound from what I know. So you have place for it ;)

The best video so far thanks. I noticed this is not advertised as a Analogue Synth by DSI. Is it a hybrid? Asume it not a virtual Analogue like a roland Gaia but not fully Analogue like my behringer Poly D? Thanks

It doesnt have a pure analog signal path (few synths have) and has analog oscillators and filters. But envelopes and FX is digital as far as I know
