I used to work for Yugoslavians. The father owned the company, and was considered Serbian - with a Serbian ending to his name. His sons considered themselves Macedonian, with a Macedonian ending to the name (same root name). When asked, they explained it as “Tito changed the borders.” They all hated Albanians.

Yes, such things were done during Tito's regime. It also happened in Montenegro, where people (Serbs) were pretty much forced to declare as "Montenegrins". Policy was to weaken Serbian nation and state by chopping it (that's why Serbian republic for example was the only one that had autonomous provinces). The roots for such policy can be found in 4th CPY congress in Dresden in 1928.

That DNA video was the funniest DNA reveal that I have ever seen lol. Thank you for sharing it on your channel. I am Serbian (with a Serbian family who had mostly lived in Croatia). I took the DNA test from 23andme and it linked my DNA to Croatia, Bosnia etc, even through those countries are not my "ethnic" origins. I feel what what these DNA tests essentially do is plot on a map where some other people with DNA that matches the tested individual's lives. Croatia has historically had a larger serbian minority population living on it's territory since the early 1700's that began a few centuries after the Ottoman invasion of the Balkans.

You probably meant from the sixth century AD where Serbs were the majority population in a good part of today's Croatian territory, that's what you probably meant, right? You probably don't know, but the first Serb states in the Balkans were created in the territories of today's Bosnia and Croatia. Not on the territory of Today's Serbia. In fact, any part of today's Serbia became part of any Serb state only a few centuries later, with the exception of today's Western Serbia up to the Western Morava River. Everything else was part of Bulgarian or Roman ("Byzantine") or Hungarian territories. Zamolio bih te da se maneš ustaške propagande. Kada kažem ustaška propaganda mislim na Anta Starčeviča i kretene koji su došli posle njega.

I don't think the Balkans ancestry is correct for 23andme. They simply don't have enough data in the region to accurately tell you where your ancestors were from. I know my ancestry back since the 1700s on both my mother's and father's side. My dad was a serb from Macedonia and his family came to Serbia and in the 1900 and my grandfather married a croatian woman. My mother's family came from Montenegro through Bosnia and then settled in Ljubovija, a small town in western Serbia on the border of Bosnia. My family considers themselves serbs, but the 23andme said we were "broadly balkan" and mainly highlighted Bosnia and and Croatia with no mention of ties to Macedonia, Montenegro or Serbia. I also got 10% Greek despite having no notion of any Greek ancestry from the prior 350 years. Maybe these were lineages from a millenia ago? Who knows.

My results put me at 40% Balkan among a nearly all Slavic DNA profile. I have a Croatian grandmother on my mother's side, but even my father's side shows contributing to my Balkan DNA. As for Bosnia & Herzegovina, there are a lot of ethnic Serbs there so his family may very well be from there and be Serbs. In the end, they are all south Slavs (which is what Yugoslavia actually means), and religion plays a big part of their identities with the Balkans being where conquerors from the west (Catholics), east (Eastern Orthodox), and south (Islam) met....any wonder that there was ethnic conflict in the region?

Serious mistakes can be heard from the original video! He says about the region of Dalmatia that it is "Croatia" - it is NOT, it newer was. He speaks of "Bosnia and Herzegovina" as a separate entity - it is NOT, it newer was. Today's borders are very, VERY arbitrary and questionable. They are not at all in accordance with the ethnic spread of the people, especially if we are talking about the time 80 or 120 years ago. The largest part, and I mean REALLY the largest part of today's political states of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina (and Montenegro), before the wartime and peacetime changes in the ethnic composition, were areas where Serbs lived as an absolute or significant majority. The movements of his ancestors (that the author of the original video describes) happened because the Serbs were repeatedly forced (most often by very violent methods) to leave those areas and go further east. The point I want to emphasize is that the author of the video is in fact of rather "pure" Serbian origin, because in all those politically fragmented areas, Serbs formed an ethnically homogeneous population. I understand that his goal was actually to make a "funny" video in line with today's entrenched (but factually incorrect) prejudices and misconceptions.

What i get from this is that probably some scandinavian dude got to albania some 100/150 years ago and mingled with one of my great grandma's or something. Problem is im blonde on both sides of my family(and they livr in 2 whole separate areas) so i dont know how i got that. That area which he showed in Romania had also a lot of Serbs in the past. Interesting example is town of Arad which was lets say "founded" by the Serbs who used to live there + largest Serbian community in Romania now living in Timisoara with their own Church and Cultural Hall in pedestrian area of the city center while during 17/18/19th century their numbers in that area were much higher. Also Bosnia where currently 32% of the people declare themselves as Serbs is nothing to be surprised of, in fact differences between genetics of so called Serbs, Croats, Bosniaks, Montenegrins are minor which lead to the fact that those are all the same people divided by religion, politics and history. I would not call them South Slavs, that term is wrong in its root, Slavic genetics here actually is somewhere from 10% up to 25% which drops down in the water all theories of "South Slavs" and half of the history which they tried to present to us during Yugoslavian time (but that could be topic for itself).

Historically, in the "Balkans", most people identified more with their religion, rather than their ethnicity. Mainly due to lack of education, and political and religious propaganda. It is well documented that the Serbian Orthodox Church taught/teaches that all Orthodox Christians in Croatia and Bosnia are ethnic Serbs. Because they have been pushing this form of propaganda for centuries, many Croats and Bosnian Orthodox have over time become Serbianised. Hence, a great example is the Croatian and Bosnian Orthodox ancestors of the young man in the video also believed that they were Serbs and eventually made their way to Serbia and raised their children as Serbs.

And I'm probably going to get yelled at for saying this, but certainly surgeon cries for the same people at one point far enough back. It's just impossible that two separate peoples would speak the exact same language have the same names with the same food dance the same dances play the same instruments the only difference between them being their Church basically. There's a reason the Region's name has become synonymous with divide and conquer. It's been subject to endless manipulation from outside

Many Serbs are blue-eyed and have blond or brown hair. Also there is not tipical slavic look. South Slavs are dark Slavs, even Czech, Slovak and part of Hungarians with Slavic roots are not so blond as Polish, Ukrainian, Belarussian or Russian. Slavic genes are I2a1 dinaric gene of darkhaired, tall, agressive, not-so-darkskined people of Dinaric mountians of Bosnia,Serbia and Croatia plus northern R1a genes of field, forest, blonde calm people. Mix of those 2 genes became Slavs. If you check, all Slavic countries have at least 60% of those 2 genes…R1a have more % north of the Danube and I2a south. We have the Slavic R1a (Slavic) genome . facts, we are Slavic. Also our language is slavic. Both dont exist and are a national identity, not ethnic. Ethnically speaking south slavs are all the same(except slovenes and macedonians) Bosnians and serbs are litterally the same thing, but 2 states with both a long history. No wonder the heart of the "serbian" tribes when they first settled in the balkans was in modern day bosnia and montenegro, and what today's serbia was mostly settled by the Bulgars. Bosnia is a nation, it existed 1000+ years ago, serbia is another nation, with 1000+ years of history. Both same people, easy as that, bosnians aint serbians and servians aint bosnians simply cause both identities are made up. Even the croats are the same thing but we can distinguish them for always being catholic and pope-leaning. Take Italy for example, or germany, there used to be hundreds of states there, but in the end they managed to come together(same language, same religion, same culture), the same happened briefly with yugoslavia but couldnt stick simply because of different religions and different culture over the centuries(some greek orthodox culture, some catholic western european culture). Take german empire and austria as an example, why didnt Grossdeutschland happen in the 1800s? The difference beetween the multiethnic austrian catholic empire and the prussian-led protestant German-only state was too big, hence why today we have Germany and Austria existing, despite both guys being pretty much the same thing

Yes. It was a huge mistake - especially for the Serbs - to form a state with those who had fought on the Axis side against them in WWI. The others actually got extra territory secured (thanks to Serbs and joining up with them), despite being on the enemy side. Similar happened after WWII. That is why there was never any loyalty in Yugoslavia. The Croats in the Yugoslav army were sending information to the Germans in the run-up to WWII and were also sabotaging the military equipment and then laughing about it. They also helped the Germans round up the Yugoslav soldiers. Many said the country fell quicker in WWII than WWI due to this betrayal from the inside.

What's the real dna? Yes it was cobbled together from peoples who at one time were the same people but who had been separated by borders and along lines of religious faith that fostered separate identities. As you can see in their analysis, they're all "balkan" which is meaningless. Actually it means they're basically genetically indistinguishable, the slovenes and the albanians being set aside.

Albanian had no relation to Turks at all, the only commonality to them is their religion, their language and DNA actually are native to the Balkan. Just like Armenian and Georgian the Albanian are truly an anomaly in history of human ethnicity because they managed to remain exclusive and separate from any other ethnic group for thousands of years and keep their own language and culture even though they has been inside multiple empire for thousands of years.

@@-_YouMayFind_- no their genetic is European but not related to any other European...like i said, their language and genetic are like the Armenian and Georgian...they are ANCIENT and didn't mixed much with outsider even after living under multiple empires. They probably the oldest European on the continent. This is also the reason why they easily converted to Islam when the Ottoman came, they wanted to be separate from other Balkans ethnic group and remain exclusive. They always hated all other Slavic ethnic because they consider them as invader. Slavic came from eastern Europe and not native to the Balkan. Bosniak on the other hand is just a Muslims Serbs and Croatian who live in the mountain xD. They converted to Islam because their church was persecuted by the Roman catholic and excommunicated by pope. So in an act of rebellious they join the Ottoman. So actually there is almost no different at all between Serbs, Croatian and Bosnian other than their religion. Most Ottoman's officers that was tasked to ruled over the Balkans was Albanian during the Ottoman empire. That is why the Serbs hated them xD. Most Janissary military elite during the Ottoman empire was actually Serbs because the Turk see how vicious and effective they are in warfare...basically a gen0cider mentality :P. Yeh the ottoman also played same tactic as the British, divide and conquer...make other European fight other European. Not to mention most of the Ottoman Sultans actually have a strong GREEK ancestry because most of their mothers and grandmothers are Greek. xD

Croatians, Bosnians, and Serbs are all related to one another! Serbs and Albanians don't like each other! Serbs and Croatians don't like each other! Serbs have been fighting Bosnian's (within the last 30 years with wars), but many Bosnians try to be nice to Serbs! Although, the Albanians get along with Bosnians and Croatians (mainly because Albanians are mostly Muslim and Catholic)!!! Also, the Greeks don't like the Turks and Albanians (and they don't like the Greeks either)!!!! I think the Serbs get along with one country (either Hungary or Bulgaria), but I forgot the country!!! That's the beef in the Balkans for you!!! XD Most of this beef is due to religious conflicts and their leaders spreading B.S. propaganda in general!!!

Serbia gets along best with Russia I'd say, as well as Greece and my native Romania because they're both majority Christian orthodox countries that never had significant conflicts throughout our shared history (which is rare af in the Balkans... 😂🤣🤣), but I don't think they get along so well with Hungary (because it used to occupy Serbian Vojvodina historically and it's Catholic) or with Bulgaria. (because Bulgaria was in the Axis in ww2 and occupied the then Yugoslavian territory of Macedonia) Also, btw, Croatian, Bosnian and Serbian are so mutually intelligible even native speakers sometimes call it "naz jezik" (our language) and literally the "languages" have fewer differences with each other than, say, Mexican Spanish does with Castillian Spanish. They all essentially speak Serbo-Croatian, which is one language with a few dialects, but for political nationalistic reasons these countries all declared officially that they have a separate language. (watch Balkan Odyssey's video called "Serbian, Bosnian, Croatian - What's the difference?" for better explanations about this) Also, finally, I'm an atheist and a leftist, so I never judge people based on their ancestry or have beefs with any "nations", (more with specific governments or economic systems) but these additions to your comment are mostly based on my experiences (most of them online but a few irl as well) with Serbian nationalists.

@@Vict0r1984 the only reason croatian and serbian are so close is because both used the same dialect (east herzegovinian Štokavian) as the standard. The dialect originally covered east Herzegovina, Šumadija in Serbia and entire Montenegro. The only part of east Herzegovina in Croatia is the area around Dubrovnik, and that's the only reason Croats chose it as the standard (try telling people in Dubrovnik that they're Herzegovinian in the 21st century, and you might get slapped 🤣). Majority of Croats before standardization spoke Čakavian. Bosnian and Montenegrin are made up languages.

Serbs are not Balkan or Slavic, most Slavs hate them, and Serbs have little affinity for Europe or other Europeans. They adopt what they like and disregard what they do not. An obscure people from eastern Europe who adopted Slavic at some point, most likely some proto European group from Carpathians just prior to Aryan incursions. An alien race who have never been able to adopt and become one with other Europeans, it makes them unique , but also been a source of their conflicts for survival.
