This machine is amazing. I wonder if it can do non-circular shapes by running the u-axis in and out depending upon the angle. If it can, it would be able to cut the valve guide and the head around the valve guide to blend into the valve... Perfectly accurately.

I am not sure if this particular machine can do this but I heard a tech talk from one of the big names in Pro Stock several years back where they mentioned they were doing exactly that. IIRC, the presenter said that the seat has to transition into the throat which will be oblong, not round, so they used a single point cutter like this that made the top and main angles round but the throat angle transitioned to the runner shape slightly.

Once you move to this type of machine you will never go back. I have been using the Newen cnc for around 10 years now and it is next level compared to anything else. It still takes an experienced operator to produce consistency. They cost a lot but the standard of work it produces is so much better. The only downside is the cutting cycle times are longer than a conventional machine.

@32:00 the reason for the discrepancy is because the probe has swarf under it. It should have been desinged that it probes each hole before cutting then uses that probe measurement and cuts off that, so it doesn't use the probe while cutting. Unless I'm wrong and it only uses it as a first measurement.

If a CNC machine was on my purchase list to be functionally value added it would have to cut an interpolated circle or ellipse or other offset throat shapes. This is just a programmable concentric seat cutter. Takes the place of form tools and will cut hard seats better without chatter. A good thing but I could not justify the cost based on just that feature or the skim cut features shown. Then there is the service aspect.. I can fix my S100 and still get parts. Having to call the factory when some electronic issue arises..

Used to work for Edelbrock and did the valve jobs for a few months, their Serdis are probably from the 90s and were in dire need of service but we still made it work somehow 😅. Wish we had this kind of stuff while I was there. We had some CNC Rottlers and got some training to set those up but they would always give us issues especially with runout...would have saved so much work if we were able to get it running properly, but in the end they ended up ditching them and they're slowly starting to add valve job cycles to their HAAS machines.

Should I get them checked at a machine shop? Should I suck it up and get new ones? I am going to reman the engine so I can sell it, I want a new toy! But.. is that a pilot that goes into the guide? Because One has to install new guides first correct? If you have a head with 2-300k miles, can you trust the "seats" to be "true" in relation to the guides? I wouldn't think there is a "tolerance" relation between the two. (?)

All valve seat machines reference off of the guide and therefore the guide must be in good condition to expect your seat to come out in good condition. If your guide is worn out, you can’t expect decent seat results. That’s true for all methods of resurfacing valve seats.

So this is obviously meant to go head to head with Newen’s Contour BB cnc single point machine. Do they both operate the same, besides the different graphical interface (software)? I haven’t gotten up close and personal with a Newen and this is first I’ve laid eyes of Serdi’s version, but I can’t really see how you could do it any other way besides the three axis he demonstrated here. Great machine no doubt, however the Siemens sinumerical (sp?) control seemed a little , how to say it, uhh, metric” to me. Like from what I could make out of the their wording it seems a little at odds to what we r used to here in the states. Obviously it’s only a matter of getting familiar with the controls but it just didn’t seem entirely inuitive to me yet it could have been the language barrier with their rep (he did a pretty good job though for it not being his native tongue).

You could probably get rid of most of not all of the chatter by putting a rubber grommet - band on the guide shaft .

I wonder how many heads you need to do in order to pay it off XD awesome machine!

I was wondering the same but... I think a more intense view for shops like JAMSI is how much times does it save to allow me to perform other money generating tasks vs the Serdi that they have? Thats a tough question to answer. I suspect this CNC Serdi is aimed at production shops like Dart, Edelbrock, etc.

No, don’t sell the old one. Keep it for breakdowns or maintenance on the new machine.

I’m certain this a great improvement over previous machines of this type. I just wish I could understand the French gentleman’s accent.

Why does this Serdi leaves its competitors like Newen behind? And is it more advanced than the Newen? A lot of High end shops uses Newen contours and epocs and the machines have been around for the last 16 years Bottom of Line, is the Serdi better than the Newen? And why?

I doubt the CNC boring head is proprietary. You could build you own.

Or you could just use a stone to touch up the seats. Both heads done before the setup in the machine is done 😁 No really a cool machine. But for making special valve seats I guess.
