I was an interrogator/instructor in the USAF Survival and Special Training School, 63-65, at Reno-Stead, NV. The improvements in training and supplies are amazing. There may not have been much change in interrogation techniques, however. I still remain proud to have been selected to endure and participate. Most of our students were aircrews flying dangerous missions.

We used to pack these for the pilots/aircrew back in the Vietnam days. Back then they came with needles and thread for stitching wounds, and more disinfectant, things like that. The neat stuff in your kits, the leathermen, etc weren't even invented yet. Main thing to remember is these are for VERY short term. Also everyone that packed these always had their favorite items like water purification tabs (iodine tabs back then, tasted like shit but worked), salt pills, whatever but we always added extra of our favorites. The main thing for me was I packed extra 38 cal rounds for their weapon whenever I could find a space big enough to put them in. The packs were OD plastic back then (think tupperware on steroids). I usually could at least triple or more the amount of ammo authorized. Good review. Thumbs up.

great Video, you are absolutely correct on the missing items, shelter and cordage. I was an instructor in our Australian defence forces known as COMSERV course. Our basic survival kit was roughly what you guys have, depending on terrain that we would be flying over or into (pack accordingly) Yes parachute or life rafts where used for shelter and cordage. I like those small lights though! ;)

A Suunto-compass? Yay! They're great, but I'm biased since I'm finnish, as is Suunto (the name means bearing/heading/direction, etc, because no one asked). Nice kit & nice video, thanks!

The Emergency Survival Kit for the Air Force pilots have come a long way since the days I was flying on the B-52's during the late 1960's and 1970's. During the 1980's I worked in MAC and never saw what their crews carried except for the handguns. Those kits look nice and I can imagine what the third kit looks like after seeing the two.

No fishing kit. This is a very minimalist kit for a survival vest. a vest with many pockets, lensatic military compass, aircew survival sheath knife, Fishing kit, survival meds, anti-diarrhea, collapsible canteen, mosquito head net and gloves, gill net, folding razor knife, iodine bottle, aspirin, Insect cream, camo stick, four pints of water in the ejection seat pack, rubber one man raft, Woodman's Pal survival tool with sheath, sunburn cream, folding military pocket knife with large blade, awl/leather punch, can opener, bottle opener screw driver blade. These are just the items I remember off the top of my head. There is also an emergency radio that works on two frequencies used for SAR with voice and beacon operation, a pistol holster, small signal flare launcher with seven flares, regular or triple canopy as terrain/location demands. A Doan's magnesium fire starter. a strobe light with IR cover.Cordage and parachute gores salvaged from you canopy of course. Silk Escape and Evasion maps of your combat area. That was the kit back in the day, mid 80's. I'm sure I left something out. All in all, I felt it was a very thoughtful kit and I practiced with mine a good bit. Just my humble observations to share.

The two outer mylar bags can be used to boil water. Roll the open neck down twice to create a rim and flatten the base, half fill the pouch with water that has been strained, stand at side of fire to boil. // Everybody note Black Scout Survival hint this is E&E - not friggin camping. // The small pocket tin is for E&E while the kit in your pockets, on your neck loop & on your belt is for survival. // This pilot SERE kit is in two pouches in the vest worn over the pressure suit and or in the ejection seat's tethered drop pack. thanks Greg

Helpful hint: This ISN'T bushcraft. The pilot won't be carving spoons and making a bush camp. He or she is behind enemy lines and they are escaping and evading while trying to meet their physical needs in a short term survival scenario.

The pilot, Marine, etc, wouldnt have any of this stuff, and if they complained about it, they would be cleaning toilets! lol. I would have love to have all these little kits. Good videos though m8, love watching these. I just always find it funny watching reviews of kits, MRE's, etc. the ones for sale seem to be top-notch. As far as I know even now, shortage of supplies is always an issue, especially for British forces. Ive seen people do reviews of the british MRE's where they have sweets, yorkie bars, and all kinds of little goodies.If you were lucky now and then youl get a few boiled sweets.
@thewileywoodsman69627 жыл бұрын
Coming from an Air Force guy, I thought it was classic how the Marine ignored the big white "open here" tabs next to the notched tear points and ripped it open from the other side. :) and the inner bags are designed open ended so you don't tear them and they serve as containers for those asking about water
@BlackScoutSurvival7 жыл бұрын
+Cliff Seeley the smaller bags are perforated so no it will not work as water container.

BTW: lot comments complaining that there are missing knive, shelter, cordage ... If I am right each pilot has own extremely good knive in vest, paracord is also available after catching ground and shelter is not in focus cause he need to evade and not to camping close the contact place. In any case pilot vest is full of other parts so he is perfectly equiped to escape, evade and survive I guess. Good luck. MS

Thanks for video. To other comments... It is the US Air Force kit...it is different from the US Para survival kit like SRU-16/P. It is even much more lightweight and minimalistic.

Back in the 1980's the survival kit did carry a small fishing kit with 3 speedhooks NSN 4220-01-379-5598. It also had a water storage bag NSN 8465-00-634-4499. I would also like to see 2-3 1200 cal. emergency food bars in the kit.

Bottle of Midol, a few Kotex & Tampons, 2' square visquene ( black ), merthiolate or mercurichome ( ? spelling ), iodine, halazone, cravat ( triangle ), small hank of parachute cord, length of piano/guitar string, 2 grenade rings, extra p38, few single edge razor blades, 2 suture kits ( pre-thread ), suture forceps ( locking ). The Aircrew life support vest will have: Radio-PLB / weapon / survival knife / flares / strobe / water / compressed hi energy rations; as these each have different use-by or serving dates. There are silk maps / monocular / Blood Chit. The Life Raft module also has other survival items. Flight suit and jacket pockets may also have additional 'flat' or small items. The outer SERE kit bags may be mylar - suitable for boiling water; but certainly can carry water with the top rolled closed. Thanks, Greg

I am not sure what version kit you have aka MK & Mod, but, my issued kit is -----Survival, EVAS, Hot Wet Environment-in addition to your items, my kit has the following in the medical pouch--- 3 - single pack Vicodin tabs, 3- small tubes of anti fungal ointment, 5- antibiotic ointment, 6- caffine tabs 4 - Iodine swabs, 5- cotton balls, 2- tampons, Burn Jelly with a Burn Plaster and 4- Cat Gut Sutures with Needles. On the EVAS side there is a Mk 74 Flare Pen Launcher and 7 Mk 31 pen flares (canopy pent) and 3-smoke flares, Screw in 3" .22lr barrel for the Pen Flare Gun, 10 rounds of .22lr ammo, decent sized bottle of red pepper powder, compressed water collection sponge, 20 - IR thumbtacks, 3- small IR chem caps with eyelet for cord (to make the SAW signal), write in rain paper and pencil, small all metal pencil sharpener, PSK knife, Potassium Perm & sugar pouches, small fishing kit, paracord woven into a small donut and an green emergency rain poncho. These two kits are in small green plastic sealed boxes with orange block description and those boxes are in really thick water tight pouches that also have a belt loop on the pouches. Year of Mfg on my kit 2009 - Frass Suirgical Mfg Co and then the NSN.

Nice kit, and I thought of cordage right away, but not shelter, not in a kit this small, but then since it's for a pilot, I figured they would use their chute for cordage and shelter. Maybe I missed it, but I was looking for some sort of bag as a water container. I always have several ways to carry water as well as duct tape to repair the water bags if needed, BUT then again this is for a pilot, so maybe they have a water container already on their vest. Keep up the great work.

one item needed is crazy glue 2 or 3 or more small tubes. if you get cut (i mean a cut/slice needing stiches) or punctured. you squeeze it closed the best you can and cover with crazy glue. also tampons (with plastic liner) exellent blood stopper, fire starter and use the liner as a straw. maxi pads too.

this is a good med kit to emulate for beginning any personal med kit. interesting to see that the military has gone to straight off-the-shelf sourcing for this stuff. missing a water container. not even a condom or long plastic bag. i thought that was what you would say was missing.

I know ill catch heat for this but i think a strong piece of fire steel and striker, a small fishing kit that i could fit into a cigar tube, which could also be used to wind the fishing line up on, as well as a water collection device. Other than that maybe a thick walled plastic type bag to gather water and treat. Why give a downed person water purification tabs without a means to gather water. And also 30 to 40 feet of bankline to suplement the fishing kit. Other than what ive said that kit is on full point. Oh and a 3aaa mini flashlight with a backup battery. Ya i know i know he already had those little red and infrared lights but hes gonna need a super small penlight and a back up battery as well. And the additional items ive mentioned would easily fit in those packs. And im assuming the man would have a belt knife or a quality folder on his person.
@chriswaller70648 жыл бұрын
Fishing hook and line, blood clot or wound sealer, Sam splints, and I trade out the head wrap for a shemog or e blanket and throw in a Tac Bar. That's tough Jack as it's a military kit, so you would have to be in that scenario, but for me I'd do things differently according to my surroundings and what may happen to me in them.

@marksolarz37565 жыл бұрын
AcePreps snaps also make noise,......can be damaged,and not work,or rip off. Most uniforms have some Velcro on them,.....namely,name tag,pockets. However you are correct,they can be noisy. You can use a lighter to melt the plastic hooks but this can make it weak. We learn by doing!

The kit is missing some C's like Cover, Container (the little plastic bags won't be good enough), Cordage, Cloth Needle, Cargo tape, Cotton (not sure if the bandage would count as cotton. It would be nice if there was an one liter plastic bag or a condom. You could use the other plastic the kits come in but you won't be able to close it. The medical kit should have some medical tape as well. I don't think the stick-to-itself stuff would do with some wounds. Nice kits, they just need some stuff.

Where can one purchase this as a civilian, or is there a civilian equivalent? I think the water tabs and fire eq are easily obtained, as is the leatherman. What about the med part? This is ultimate for gtg bags, ie car carry emergency, but I am bent on the AF having better issue than civilian.
