My SERE survival kit. The components of the kit coincide with other survival systems and methodologies that seek to preserve life in the field. In addition, the components present opportunities to improvise with materials from the surrounding environment or recreate items used during actual scenarios. As always the kit focuses on the basic survival needs of water, shelter, fire, food as well as navigation, signaling, and medical. The greatest lesson learned and which should be the focus above all else is the will to survive!

You can also use old vitamin bottles to store the cotton-ball tinder. I make dozens of them so I can split the lot up, or carry them in different packs, or give them people, or bury them.

Andrew-An item I found recently to add to the sewing kit is a liquid mending fluid for attaching fabric together. Supposed to permanently mend . Take care and stay strong!!

I also want to add that prior to becoming a SERE Instructor, I was a P-3 Flight Engineer and as such flight crews didn't have the luxury of carrying a 3-7 day load out. We had our SV-2 survival vest and what ever was in the life rafts. That isn't to say that I didn't supplement my vest with survival items, especially after having been a student at SERE. Survival kits have come a long way especially for fighter jocks, who have layered systems in their ejection seat. And ground pounders already have this gear on their back and with them at all times.

I love my Moras. Have the Carbon steel Garberg and the "cheap" companion version. The 20-25 dollar version does everything that the high end does. Except the high carbon steel is thicker, better for ferro rods and it has a striker on the hilt end for one handed striking with a sheathed blade. Both hold a great edge.

I make knives, specializing in battle and survival blades. I am not a fan of the Mora and never have been. I've broken two of them. When you grow up and are ready for a real knife contact me. And no it won't cost you $9000 but it certainly won't be $20

As a retired SERE Instructor, the evasion portion is NOT classified at least not unless it is specific to an area of operation. Also why anything less than 50 pound test fishing line? I run 80 Lb test Spyder Wire in my kit so I can use it for other purposes, plus I'm not sport fishing in a survival situation..In fact the only thing that is really classified are the mechanics of the course. Our 13,000 acre trying facility is in Northern Maine. We also taught 2 cold weather survival courses on the training facility and an advanced evasion course as well. We taught TEST (tropical environment survival training) on the island of Antigua and then on Puerto Rico.

Speaking as a civilian, that's comforting to hear: rather than entertaining any harebrained notions of fighting back, I'd be grateful for any knowledge of how to GET OUT of outrageously bad situations and places (not that I particularly want to get into them in the first place).

Thumbs up! I know at the end you talk about distributing through your gear, but for those who want to keep it really bare bones, all this gear shown can fit in a haversack or inexpensive backpack at very low weight. As the saying goes, carry pounds or carry knowledge. You started to mention the use of sewing kit for wounds and backed off, but I saw a good hack recently for this, which avoids the whole suture issue: put a length of 550 cord on either side of the wound, wrapped in a bit of tape and taped to the skin, then sew the two bits of cordage together to close the wound -- essential creating a sort of super steri-strip -- wound closure without contact. Then wrap over this mess with a bit of shirt or triangle bandage or whatever to keep the dirt out. Keep up the good work!

I graduated SERE C High Risk in 1992. Looking back, I kinda wish I could do it again. It was a big confidence builder.

@@RangerSurvivalandFieldCraft Nothing like being thrown into peoples pond in late November breaking the ice and sinking under and the SHOCK of the ice cold water everywhere. They drug me out and threw me in the little 3’x3’ box. Locked me in there for about an hour, however my body heat brought me back. I went through the Bragg SERE, at the JFKSWCS.

Nice job! I was on SERE with Sargent Major Nail. SERE has sure come along way. I love the compactness and lightweightness of everything. I'd add one of them compact hatchet wire cutting foldable shovels as well.

Fantastic, I was at SERE with SGT MAJ Nail with the wandering eye and the feared “Bearded One.” Smacked the heck out of me a lot cause I was unfortunately the largest guy. Go Army Airborne.

Great kit. I was an 11B '91 - '96. We always used 3ft bungee cords for a quick poncho hooch. I carried 6. 4 corners and 2 for the hood lift. For the PX sewing kit has buttons for BDUs, class A and Bs and issue Duster. I replaced the buttons with 6 BDU buttons and 100' of OD thread. A dozen or so safety pins collected from 5.56 bandoliers and cravats. Never used it once.

Great choice on the Mora knife. Those knives last for very long time, if you know how to use and take care of them. The bigest advantage for long walks is it weights nothing. A great tool in the hands of an expert.

In my survival kit I use the black contractor bags, but I also have a 30 gallon I guess clear bag for transpiration. But, the two 1 gallon Ziploc bags.. 🙄. So simple, but I didn't think of'em. Thanks for the tip, major. Hooah!

Nice video. You have a knack for presentation! I would love to attend the "S" and "E" parts of SERE training because they would be so practical for being outdoors and not wanting to show signs that you were there. Have a look at the Sheffield made British MOD survival knife known as the pig. It’s a beast of a blade and you can even use it to shovel stuff, as well as batonning etc. The sheaths are poor but Wessex Bushcraft has some ideas. Thank you for showing the kit it’s given me some cracking ideas for my overnighting wild camp kit

Congrats on your SERE training. My question to you is, why you never showed what type and size of ruck you used to have your SERE equipment in. In the CDN military, we were only allowed one type of ruck. Great vid's. Please keep them coming.

Only reason is I didn’t have the ruck at the time of shooting the video. I used the OCP MOLLE rucksack for the course. I usually don’t use it and prefer my Malice Pack.

I really enjoyed watching your videos, I'm eager to learn & observe different techniques and items/products that everyone chooses however I'm always curious of the weight of packs, etc.(admittedly I weigh practically everything - I know it might seem a little tedious but I consider weight since I have a cardiac history ...even when purchasing survival/outdoor products) some survivalists/bushcrafters seem to overlook this detail ( I remember some use to have pack weight challenges) ... I'm sure I'll catch flack for saying this. I keep GORILLA SUPER GLUE in each vehicle, my go bag, and my tent pack for camping. Closes a cut faster than anything else I've ever tried. Burns a bit, but works.

Thanks for the video! Question for ya that I've always been curious about: how does the wilderness survival portion of SERE compare to the Pathfinder Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced courses in terms of curriculum/intensity?

Since your question was almost a year ago, as a retired soldier I will venture an answer. In my military experience I would say the SERE course would be more difficult than most civilian courses due to the necessity of military members needing to be at their TOP performance due to needs of their branch and situation. I'm not saying civilian courses are "light weight" but the military NEEDS people trained in these courses often as soon as they graduate.

hello friend ... it is very likely being caught that knives, boxes, kits, etc. .. are immediately removed. The only real SERE kit I put it in a cylindrical cigar box. it contains button compass, custom knife, part of the objects shown by you that can fit in the cigar case: matches, brass wire, hooks, fishing line, etc .... all this is carried inside the ..... body. so basically I'll bring two SERE kits. a minimal hidden one and a more expanded standard of the kind you showed. I always wear medium size cable ties, they are light and take up little space and serve a thousand uses. one thing that never fails is also a spool of dental floss which replaces the sewing thread but is much more resistant. it can also be used as a fishing line and as a thread for emergency stitches it takes up little space and many meters fit into the cigar case mentioned above as the paracord is too bulky to fit inside. @@1980Baldeagle maybe I explained myself wrong: the special forces on a mission carry a SERE kit in the ass. I did it. normally in everyday civil matters it is illegal to wear even a simple one-inch blade sleepjoint. in Italy it is illegal to carry knives, brass knuckles, tasers, objects that can hurt, you can also be sued for a screwdriver or gardening tools such as an ax in your car ... basically in Italy it is illegal to defend yourself. only the police can defend you..you understand it's a big problem. even in Italy you cannot make an armed bodyguard. it's really very very very difficult to get a hidden pistol port ... even the sporting weapons you can have are limited ... this LOOKS like a beautiful country for tourists who come here to see the cities of art, the sea, the hills and drink Chianti wine but I assure you friend that the free ride ends with a good one food. Here you cannot defend your person or your loved ones or your property. according to the law, if you find thieves in the house you have to lock yourself in a room and call the police, which depending on where you live will arrive after 5 hours ... that's why I would like to leave and the USA is my secret dream .. .I ride with a Busse on my belt because I live off the grid, but when I go to town I also have to leave the folder at home ..

Try sneaking in some dryer lent next time. That said, Vaseline with cotton, sealed off in a regular plastic straw. Use your knife to seal the ends for wet fire making. That said, every one slides something past the RI or instructors. In my day, if you got caught you where not trying hard enough. The object is to survive.

My kit includes triple antibiotic ointment and cotton balls for obvious reasons Also iodine tincture is included in the medical portion of the kit

This is almost exact to the vehicle emergency bags, with exception to the quick set up line, stocking cap over boonie, add quick fire, water in pouches (good to -40 starter water) 72 hr food rations, bivy and patio winter window kit. Some things may seem like there is more than needed but I wanted us set each vehicle for provisions and each to have a canteen cooking complete set up. The woobie we have to fight the other for - no it'll be mine because I fixed all the hubs old hunting clothes and packed those for him in each vehicle; he works to hard and way to much to have to worry about moving thibgs back and forth between the trucks. I did notice something completely different however ..... Is that buttons on the woobs?

Not to be contradictory or anything but the pinch liner with buttons and a zipper is standard issue and has been for a while. I’m not sure if you’re referring to the fact that yours is multi-cam but when I was is the Marine Corps from 2015-2019, we were issued the poncho liner with buttons and zippers in the woodland BDU pattern. Again, I’m not trying to be contradictory or start an argument. I just want to make sure accurate information is being dispersed.

I think iodine tablets are better. They are portable and easy to measure out and apply. Bleach is good. I used it as well as iodine in Ranger School. It just seems more tedious to me.

The big difference between civilian and military survival is the presumption of war time conditions. Tho a civilian could be in a war zone and a soldier could be lost in a non war zone.

Earl Elzy There are a few restrictions to soldiers when it comes to media and even social media content. As long as the content doesn’t violate the Hatch Act, which governs political activity, or release sensitive information, such as classified info that could not be found in open sources, it’s generally authorized. As a former commander I like to have a close relationship with the unit JAG just for this purpose. This is also why I like to leave references for diagrams or state in the video if something is open source or not. Nothing I show or discuss is sensitive as it pertains to survival. Commanders don’t have legal authority to approve/disapprove media content for soldiers unless it’s discovered in a violation of the aforementioned. This is why we have “Army WTF Moments” and other similar sites. Heck, I had a soldier that ran a gaming channel and another who ran a fitness channel. As long as we don’t get political and don’t spill secret beans it’s good to go.

It ranged widely due to the nature and various stages of training. At most it was 60# plus and as little as a couple pounds of gear.

We had stones issued to us during the course, just a basic double coarse-fine stone for the crap knives they gave us. I didn't have to sharpen a whole lot and to be honest the stone was probably in use since Vietnam!

I was on a wilderness hike with my friend and his dog , a long way from the vehicle or any road when his dog got into a porcupine. A face full of quills. We pulled them out with the pliers from his multi tool. Ive also spent months in the Alaskan Bush working for an outfitter. Motor boats , snowmobiles and super cubs were the mode of transportation. The list of how many times I used and needed my multi tool pliers is a long one. A very important piece of kit when things get real.

I don't believe that someone could see the reflection from signal mirror from almost 100 miles away. In order to see it anything at 100 miles distance, the altitude difference between 2 points has to be 1mile because of the curvature of the earth. Plus, 100 miles visibility is almost impossible due to haze, dust, air pollution . It's seems like just one of those stories...

Look up Heliography. For a quick example Signal mirrors were used for ages from Roman times up to the present. More recently the U.S. Army used heliographs to signal between outposts over 100 miles away during the Civil War and after. There was actually a stretch of heliograph posts throughout Arizona and New Mexico that placed ~27 heliographs between 2,000 miles and successfully communicated in the effort against the Apache Indians.

I think the school was more concerned with the layout of the course as opposed to techniques by way of classification. They just don’t want us talking about it for the sake of future students.
