In 2004 she was robbed. Then the public booed Capriati during the on-court interview and she had the audacity to say it was not a big deal, because Serena still won the game…well, this video shows she didn’t, the game went unfairly to Capriati and that break of serve was enough for her to win the match.

Anyone who knows the rules in tennis knows that Serena was dead wrong in 2018. That's why it was so frustrating to see so many people (especially in America) who at best are casual tennis fans defend her disgraceful behaviour
@isaacabraham938

But what I’m thinking is just bc it’s the rules doesn’t mean it’s right. Ngl I’m a casual tennis fan and I’ve never actually looked at the rules before but like if Serena can’t express her emotions without getting penalized for it then the rules are just not fair.
@isaacabraham938
@isaacabraham938 10 ай бұрын
What I understand is that the umpire (I’m pretty sure that’s what he’s called in tennis) penalized Serena for getting coaching from her coach, smashing her racket, and for “verbal abuse” when all she called him was a liar and a thief for stealing her points (which in my opinion is not verbal abuse but hey if that’s verbal abuse according to the rules then I think that rule is too soft. To me verbal abuse would be cursing or like getting in front of the umpire’s face and screaming or something.) I don’t see why smashing a tennis racket is a problem bc she could just replace it and also bc once again she just let her emotions loose. I don’t know how they expect ppl to play like emotionless robots. And for the “coaching”, they talked to her coach after the game and he said that he actually was coaching but he doesn’t think Serena even saw the gestures he was making which is why she was confused and upset about the coaching calls. Also he said that almost all of the other coaches also coach during matches but they don’t get penalized for it.

Re. 2009, there's a debate as to whether the foot fault call was correct. Whether a foot fault was committed or not, how could anyone with sense take Serena's words literally, especially in such a public setting? Who is going to threaten anyone (if that's what she did) for millions to hear then actually follow through with the threat? ... Re. 2011, I do wish Serena would've delayed the noise she made, though it's likely Stosur would've hit a forced error without the hindrance. I can't argue against the umpire's decision (if within the rules) ... Re. 2018, that may have been a coaching gesture from Morataglu, but Serena didn't interpret it as such, so she was punished for something her coach did, something she wasn't complicit in ... In each of these instances, Serena's responses stemmed from the feeling of being wronged & no one can say for a fact that she wasn't wronged at any point. It doesn't help she'd already had a history of being wronged (2004 US Open, 2003 French Open, etc), so it must've felt like déjà vu in 2009, 2011 & 2018 ... People are focused on Serena's responses, but what about what led to her responses? What about her feeling of being wronged?

2004 was so wrong, 2009 may have been the wrong call, but if she did in fact say she was gonna kill the umpire then the verbal abuse warning is correct in technicality, 2011 is correct in terms of ruling but if i was stosur i would've just let her have it tbh, 2018 is sort of correct, i understand that maybe serena couldn't have seen the coaching, but fact of the matter is patrick did coach her, and ppl have to understand that umpires have to call what they see, they can't just think oh serena never calls the coach so it should be fine, it's a professional sport in which rules need to be upheld and it's a shame it led to osaka's poor treatment, but serena also definitely dragged it on afterward to a very odd extent, and the verbal abuse call was probably justified considering how much and how long she was ripping into carlos, at that point you need to give a code otherwise it affects players on the court and affects the umpires ability to do his or her job. i gwt we all have favourite tennis players but it's the rules and you don't get a bypass on them no matter how many slams you've won, it's just the way it is.

I understand what you are saying but I feel like that it was still unfair and unjust only because there have been numerous male players who have said or done way worse including Djokovic Federer so and so forth but they were penalized in the way that she was. I remember watching this match and the commentary on it and even they agreed that that game penalty call was definitely out of line. In my humble opinion I believe that the chair umpire knew that he was wrong and instead of admitting that the wrong doing he decided to penalize her more. Now dont get me wrong I do believe that serena could have handled this in a better way but with heightened emotions and basically having to defend your character will push someone to an emotional response. At the end of the day fair is fair and all players male and female should be treated equally.

I’m a bit of a Serena fan and here is what I have to say to it: 2004 - Serena was completely robbed. Horrible umpiring. Lost respect for Capriati. Serena handled it better than most and she even shook hands with the umpire. 2009 - Serena’s fault. Overreacted to the call. Didn’t look like a foot fault but she could have just asked which foot it was instead of cursing the lineswoman out. 2011 - Serena overreacted and her “come on” definitely came before the ball bounced and Stosur got a racquet on it. I found her “you’re unattractive inside” comment quite funny though. She was wrong when she said, “and I never complain.” 2018 - Serena definitely overreacted. I agree that she tries to be honest but the racquet smash made the situation worse. She could have just stopped at “I don’t cheat to win, I’d rather lose” because she was being polite in that exchange, rather than go off on the umpire for giving her a point penalty. She definitely got coaching, and saw it because she said that he gave her the “thumbs up” and rushed to the net more. Then she pulls the gender card and continues to berate the umpire even after the game penalty. I’ve always admired the way Serena played and the way she changed women’s tennis. It was amazing how she was able to achieve so much during her time on tour. However, most of these US Open incidents were on her, and she should have handled them differently if she was so upset about them. I really felt bad for Osaka after USO 2018.

If a ball goes out and is called in, a player would lose his/her mind and fight for it. What Capriati did was the very definition of unsportsmanlike conduct. There's NO WAY that she didn't see those in. This game is just horrible in the way it's blatant. Either blatant racism/favouritism or gross incompetence! Then for JC to say that it's only fair coz she had a few go against her, that's stunning. Anyone who plays any code of sport would tell you that a bad call can throw you off your game.

In '04, she was genuinely, severely robbed, but largely kept her composure and conducted herself well under the circumstances. In '09, '11, and '18, she was in the wrong and engaged in shameful histrionics and personal abuse of officials over basic rules being enforced against her. The latter behavior (down to summoning-the-tournament-supervisors-to-hear-her-case) suggests to me that she developed an overinflated ego over the years after compiling an endless litany of major victories and accolades, coming to feel she could throw her weight around and talk down to those around her. I also recall that following the 2018 display at the US Open, we saw some similar behavior from Nadal and Djokovic months later (bringing out tournament supervisors to complain about umpires enforcing time violation rules and whatnot), showing their own sense of superstar entitlement. I do fear the experience of amassing a multiple-digit count of major titles across many years is not good for a person's groundedness or humility.

She was ALWAYS like that. 2009 US Open, 2012 US Open proved my point. And at the 2015 US Open she demanded that she has to train ASAP after her 1st round match. The court was full with everybody training so the tour officials had to kick out Samantha Stosur, so that Serena can practice at the expense of Stosur. At the 2019 French Open, after her early exit. She demanded to do a press conference ASAP and since there was not available big enough PC room for her. The tour officials had to kick Dominic Thiem out of his PC and move him to a smaller room because it was reported Serena was angry backstage that she couldn't do PC ASAP. Lets not forget also, the first 10 years of her career. She never gave any credit to her opponent every time she lost a match and always came up with excuses such as "I was playing really bad". She is just a horrible person. Mcenroe was horrible too, but he never abuses his power. Serena abuses her power so many times. Getting WTA to go against Ramos, kicking Sam out of her training session, kicking Thiem out of his PC. It is my wild guess but I believe the umpire at the 2004 US Open was teaching her a lesson. She probably said something mean to her and the umpire was like, see u in court ☺️

Well said. Though, it wasn't "bad luck" in the '04 final. She was cheated.

To be honest, her compassion and competitiveness is real. If these were men talking like that, it would just be compassion, if a woman does it, shes the B word. We legit GLORIFY hockey players fighting but turn our nose at Serena. It’s definitely a double standard and Tennis would make a lot more money if they got some refs with a backbone. If I was the ref, I would’ve talked smack right back and got back to business. It’s sports and as a man who plays sports, this is nothing new. I wasn’t a fan of how they booed Naomi Osaka, but I also believe that you have to be prepared for the BS if you are in the limelight. ALSO, if that ref was on a soccer field making verbal abuse calls, he might not make it out of a stadium alive.

Bs men get called out for 'talking like that ' also. Women wanted equality and now don't like it.

Sorry late-comer. Even the worst personalities in tennis never threatened physical harm or screamed at officials "I know where you and your children live..."(at least since I started watching/attending in the late 60's). My least favorite Williams moment was when she was so out-of-her entitled mind threatening & screaming and acting out she eventually caused Naomi Osaka to break down when she should have been relishing the moment of her win! She's a disgusting bitch. Period.

V Capriati, she was robbed… clear and simple. The rest was correctly refereed, but unfortunately the Williams’ look at every incident thru the prism of discrimination, and it actually fired her up but also possibly harmed her at times… it’s really a shame because Serena is the unrivaled greatest player of the open era

The link with all these video's is that whenever Serena was feeling the match was escaping her or about to lose, she couldn't admit it, and thus she did all to show that there were other circumstances against her than only the opponent. A (psychological) game in a game. And this was the only thing I disliked about her. Not accepting the defeat.

Why does the video say "2004 Final vs. Capriati?" Capriati did not even make the finals that year. It was an all-Russian final.
