Castletown in Co. meath
Welcome, my dear viewers, to a journey through history and mystery. Today, our destination is an ancient graveyard, an abandoned church, and an old crypt. This is a place where time has stood still, where the echoes of the past still resonate in the present day.
As we explore this place, we will discover the remains of a noble and wealthy family. The crypt holds their final resting place, and inside we find two ornate coffins - one of which is open. To our amazement, we see a human skeleton lying inside the coffin, perfectly preserved as it was when first buried.
Beyond the crypt, we wander through the graveyard and discover the stories of the people who lived and died long ago. The abandoned church stands as a somber reminder of the past, and we feel a sense of awe and reverence as we stand in its shadow.
Join us on this journey through time and space, as we explore the secrets of this ancient graveyard, discover the fascinating stories of the people buried here, and contemplate the mysteries of life and death.

I did some digging, and found that parts of the original church (c1306), as well as tomb chest fragments from the 1400s (the half effigy above the window is one), are built into this newer one. And based off the construction material and method, the mausoleum dates to c1830. No idea who's in there though! You've done it again Sue, another gobsmacking discovery. It was an absolute delight walking around this place with you two. Take care. Deb of Oz XXX.

😯 Back in the day this place would have made for a storybook wedding site! Beautiful church on a hill with stone walls and greenery. The people in that mausoleum must have been wealthy and the social elite. I was expecting the jawbones to start moving saying: " How's it going?".😂 Could be one of your top finds. Great work guys! 👏

Very odd the people of the church just up and leave leaving the church and also abandon the graves and nobody to care for the cemetary. If I didn't know any better, which I don't, maybe there was no more profit to be made? But that only makes sense in today's world of private cemetery ownership. Can't make anymore money on it, don't want to pay to maintain it, can't sell it so just leave.

Completely green, overgrown and amazing. Looks like that decayed coffin with the skeleton along with the second coffin are in a seperate crypt inside that Musoleum. I'd be willing to bet the bell was under all the stuff in front the door, the knights on the walls denote to me a relationship to some order. I am a campbell on my dad's side, it's been generations since my part of the line has been home to Scottland. My great grandfather on my mother's side was a Glenn, he was from Glenndalla (forgive my spelling) as told me by my grandmother. You guys voices when I here them make my heart beat differently. I long to go back there to the home land and be with my ancestors. When I was a younger man I looked like one the stained glass of one of the Saints Columba. When I hear music from there I just have this longing, thank ye. Estranged from home in the US

@@SerenitySueGraveyards Ive done extensive genealogy research up to my great grandfather's side just up to a point in Ireland but I cannot read the old language to go any farther without a translation, as far as my sir name Campbell I've hit a wall here in the US, around the civil war era my family history dies off, I believe the original Campbells here in my line probably came as immigrants but that's a much as I've got, my English lineage is about the same as well as my grandmother on my dad's side - she was Cherokee native Am, at one time I had located 1700 named in my tree, things were lost back in 2019 - some is still online but the laptop with the whole is gone - there was 19 years of history research there lost

Hi Sue & GV, looked up the pins and needles meaning. Here in the states near Appalachia, also where a lot of Scots-Irish settled, the tradition of leaving pins & needles was brought here to the US. There are quite a few meanings but I believe the one for those who have passed on would be for protection. I just thought that was so interesting. They also talked about healing which wouldn't apply in this case. Looks macabre. Shivers. Thanks for the video, it was amazing. Loved the glowing crypt. Absolutely stunning. Btw, I am right off the Appalachia trail, we moved here from Philadelphia for retirement and to get away from the dangers of the city. Hence, it's like living in Scotland & Ireland here. Philly also has a huge Irish population as well. I hang my Irish & Scots flag along my fence. I'm from the Irish Doorly clan. They ended up moving to Barbados & Jamaica. Finally, America.

Sue, that accent of yours...😍 The vines on the trees look beautiful, but they will eventually kill those trees by sucking up all the nutrients and water before the tree roots do. They can also smother the leaves from sunlight. Those gorgeous trees will be lost unless most of the vines growing on the are removed.

I know your being respectful but I don’t think the deceased people would mind you walking up to the grave stone over the remains since you are reading their stones and remembering them in life. They probably haven’t been visited in many many many years and love to have the company and remembrance. Please don’t worry about walking on the grave since they’re long gone up with our Heavenly Father and left under the ground are just that, empty vessels of a once loved person. By visiting these graves you are respecting them unlike most people and honoring their lives!!!! 🙋🏼‍♀️🥰🇺🇸🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I loved this video. The church is so beautiful. It seems such a shame that it is just left now. The vault was so interesting, I wonder who the two people are that are laying there 🤔. Thank you for this video Sue.

Watching from Alberta Canada and very much enjoying the tours. My father is from a small village outside of Bristol. Went to see the old cottage where he was born and went to the wee church he attended as a boy. The graveyard in the churchyard contains many of my relatives (Brock) and has my great grandparent and grandparents which appear to be buried on top of each other. So very interesting to watch you explore. I love the fact of how respectful you are towards the souls that rest in peace and the dignity you have for them. Keep it up.

Very interesting Sue. I used to live in Navan for many years even long before I was a jock for Atlantic 252 back in the day. So Castletown is a place I know quite well. As to who exactly is at rest in that vault is unknown. Obviously someone of great wealth / stature. Nonetheless, this was a very interesting discovery and well worth your effort. Jeez if the walls of that church could talk!!!!

Fabulous find, stunning church! How bizarre is that that somebody excavated that tomb right smack dab into the foot of a coffin!, As you panned around to the right, seeing the other untouched coffin with those beautiful ornate handles, stunning! I backtracked several times because I kept thinking I was seeing another smaller skull in with that skeleton... possibly a child buried with that person? As you came around towards the end of your video, that huge tree overgrowth that you thought was weeping willow, could very well have been an ancient wisteria. I've never seen one that big, but you've shown us a lot that I've never seen before LOL
