Sergei Bortkiewicz (1877-1952) was born in present day Kharkiv, Ukraine. He studied at the Imperial Conservatory of Music in Saint Petersburg and later in Leipzig under two former pupils of Franz Liszt. Bortkiewicz's piano and composition style was very much based on Liszt and Chopin, nurtured by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, early Scriabin, Wagner and Ukrainian folklore. The piano concerto No 1 was composed in 1918, just a year before the Russian Revolution forced his family to flee to Constantinople. In subsequent years he relocated to Belgrade, Vienna, Paris, and finally to Berlin where he lived the remainder of his life. The date the work's premiere is uncertain, although in his final year it was performed in the Musikverein Hall in Vienna as a 75th birthday concert by pianist Felicitas Karrer with the composer conducting.
Milton Stern is Professor Emeritus of California State University, Los Angeles, where he was Professor of Piano and Distinguished Professor of Music for 33 years. A native of Brooklyn, NY, he earned his Doctor of Education from Columbia University in 1954. He resides in the Los Angeles, California area.
Andrew Levin is Professor Emeritus at Clemson University where he led the Clemson University Symphony Orchestra for 27 years. He is also a freelance violist who subs in regional orchestras, plays chamber music, and contracts and plays music across the southeastern US. He earned his Doctorate of Musical Arts at Ball State University. He resides in Clemson, South Carolina.

Thank you Greg Sandell for putting in the time to make this presentation presentable and Thank you Andrew Levin for being Dad's partner in making this gorgeous Concerto come to life. I remember fondly spending quite a bit of time listening to Dad practice this piece as I often came home from work and took a siesta under the piano. You are an amazing musician Dad thanks for sharing your gift of the keys for a lifetime.

Hi, I was wondering if you might be able to direct me to where I can get the orchestral parts for this piece. We have looked in so many places and have not been successful. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Pianist is OK for an amateur, but quite many unpleasant mistakes and constant interpretation problems - but also some good parts. Orchestra does in large parts not master its task, brass sounds like a horrible third class circus band, but also tutti are sometimes simply bad, furthermore no response to the soloist, conductor seems to be completely unaware of what happens, overall not acceptable. Players are simply unable to cope with the grandezza and the virtuoso challenge of the work. While the phantastic piece is to a certain degree undestroyable and has still some of its great effects, in all, not a performance to be recommended. These are the moments when KZfaq is REALLY damaging classical music.

I wouldn’t blame youtube, it’s the person who decided to post it. I agree that it’s regrettable that there are no good recordings of this concerto posted onto youtube, but I think that’s mainly attributed to it being a lesser known concerto. I agree that this recording is not doing this concerto any justice, and hopefully people who read your comment will understand that. I just think you overstated your point to the extent where it may come off as hateful-that isn’t to say I disagree, I just want your message to come across the right way so people who read will understand.

@@eesti8106 There are at least two fine recordings available on CD but it's as usual a question of copyright. I would recommend for the labels to publish more on KZfaq, just for promotional purposes, as many listeners may decide to purchase the respective CD (in order to get the higher quality standard) after they have been evidenced a good performance by such sample. I do buy most of the superior interpretations I come across on KZfaq later on disc - if they are available. The problem why I am typically harsh with such inferior postings is that they may very likely spoil the interest of many new listeners for this composer, maybe for lifetime. I learned this myself with several quite unknown works which I first rated as uninteresting until by chance I came across a better interpretation. So I do think that anybody who is publishing a performance of a proven first class composer like Bortkiewicz has a kind of responsibility for not causing de-famation of the work. There are so many simpler pieces which can be mastered and played well by those amateurs - why must they for God's sake try to climb a mountain which is much too steep and demanding for them? "Know your limits," is the proverb here.
