I play around a lot with video and music, changing the mood, the emphasis, or whatnot... but never, NEVER, have I done something that touched me so much as this. Removing the grand, full orchestra with all it's pomp and drama, and replacing it with a bare bones minimalistic piece of music has never changed something so much.
This pas de deux went from a larger-than-life, dramatic dance of passion to an exquisitely fragile moment of intimacy. You almost feel as if you're intruding on something so personal and so beautiful, you have no business watching.
This may be one of my favorite "musical experiments." I think I broke my heart watching it...
Ballet: Mayerling
Choreographer: Kenneth MacMillan
Dancers: Sergei Polunin & Anna Ol
Alternative Music: "Snowdrop" by Kevin Macleod used with permission via Attribution Licensing.
Sergei Polunin is a Ukrainian-born, Russian ballet dancer. Famous for his “once every hundred years” talent, he has incredulous elevation and impeccable technique. From an early age, he displayed glorious dramatic range. Home videos of him as a tiny boy improvising to Pavarotti are very foretelling. At age 19, he became the Royal Ballet’s youngest ever male principal dancer.
Ballet gained an unprecedented new awareness when he danced in Hozier’s viral video ”Take Me To Church.” People who would never
have paid any attention to ballet began to watch the tattooed phenom. He is generally attributed with bringing ballet to the modern common man. Classical, yet cutting edge, Sergei starred in Diesel’s “Make Love Not Walls” campaign and has put his mark on many other promotions.
Sergei is a much sought after model and actor. Fashion designers love his breathtaking physique and brooding good looks. He has garnered only positive reviews for his acting. His appearances include Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of the Orient Express, the biographical documentary Dancer, The White Crow, and Red Sparrow.

@@PamBoehmeSimon I have seen the whole of this ballet about half a dozen times over the last 20 years and each time the choreography of this last scene is slightly different but every time it is equally compelling. And I have read several historical books on the incident at Mayerling and during one of my trips to Vienna I went to visit the Mayerling hunting lodge where this took place. To me it is the most compelling ballet and the most astonishing choreography of any ballet I have seen and no other ballet can be compared to it for showing with movements the inner characters and torment .of the protagonists. Kenneth McMillan’s choreography is out of this world and it must give huge satisfaction to any dancer to be able to bring it to life. If you are interested there are a few clips on YT of McMillan himself rehearsing the original cast for the first production of the ballet way back in the 1970s. I found them very interesting and you may do so also.

This was, without a doubt, exquisite. I needed to watch this video five times before commenting, because I simply could not find the words to respond to it. And honestly, I'm not sure that I can now. I didn't see this ballet with its original music, and I now cannot imagine it being danced to a full, grand orchestra. The dance is raw and broken, and deserves the sense of mourning that the minimalist music gives it. After rewatching it once I'd researched the Mayerling Incident, I am only more bewitched by this masterpiece, and the display of this fatal love scene. So often, our society and pop culture turn physical intimacy into a vulgar and cheap party trick, but this dance made it seem almost sacred. Thank you for making this- I absolutely loved watching it.

Dearest Lizzy, you see it. You feel it. You "get it" completely. "Raw and broken" ... I absolutely adore that description. And "sacred"! You have a beautiful way with words. You are most welcome, and thank YOU for watching and so, so eloquently commenting. Your contribution via your profound comment to this exquisite and tragic story is much appreciated.

Lizzy T of course the reality of Mayerling was not romantic but more political The young Maria Vetsera was involved in a love story without any knowledge of the political involvement of his lover announcing a sad ending. The character of the Kroonprintz Rudolf is very interesting, especially with Polounin showing the ambiguity of this man clever, frustrated by his father the emperor Frantz Joseph and in admiration for the only woman he loved, his mother Sissi

I read your description for this vid, & completely agree with your choice to move to minimalist music. One of the highlights of your work IS your choice of music. Removing the ”pomp & circumstance” typical of classical ballet scoring frees up a huge space for the viewer. Less grey matter is needed to process the music, so we can concentrate on the dancers/dance. We can see them AS dance, an embodiment of both the verb & the noun. “I am the dancer & the dance; I am the singer & the song” (an actual quote but I cant remember the source). Your technique also reminds me of the great Japanese director, Akira Kurosawa, particularly his movie “Ran.” There is a long battle scene (feudal Japan), very violent, lots of death & fire, lots of slo-mo. But what you hear is a soft classical piece, minor keys, no other sounds. It was startling when I first saw it, but it is very effective at concentrating the viewers’ attention on what they see. Your eye for composition does the same thing. Marvelous!

The Royal Ballet’s extraordinary production of Kenneth MacKillan’s Mayerling, with Sergei Polunin dancing the role of the Prince Rudolf and Natalia Osipova as his mistress Mary Vetsera. Its a pity that the music has been changed because you miss the drama , desire and despair of the Franz List score that makes this choreography so powerful .

You are very welcome. The performance is from 2013 and performed by the Stanislavsky company in Moscow. Sergei was only 23 at this time... the reviews of his performance are stellar. Here is the performance, not in whole but much of it is there. www.dailymotion.com/video/x1h23gd_mayerling-4-05-2013-sergei-polunin-anna-ol-anastasia-pershenkova_creation

Pocahontas. The fact is that Crown Prince Rudolf WAS dark and violent. He was mentally deranged due to syphilis. He was not a gentle person. In real life he was prone to violent outbursts and was known to be a violent lover. Maria Vetsera was just his latest mistress but he had a long string of them. Steven McRae depicts the REAL Rudolph not an idolised version of him. The whole ballet is very dark and quite violent. He was obsessed with death and the young 16 year old Maria Vetsera was infatuated with both him and his death obsession.
