Extraordinary performance. Rana is a major force in the world of pianism today. Superb Prokofiev # 2.

The talent from this amazing woman defies words and description! There was a time when the Prokofiev 2 was considered so difficult that only a handful of people would ever attempt it and even then, simply making it through the cadenza and hitting most of the notes would have been considered a success. Horacio Gutierrez set the standard for a long time with a magnificent recording and it was matched by an equally coruscating performance by Yuja Wang. This recording by Ms Rana eclipses those high achievements. There is artistry, poise and virtuosity to spare! It was quite amazing to watch the orchestra members positioning to watch Ms Rana play the incredible cadenza in the 1st movement. It's a shame that there were empty seats in that hall. Ms Rana will have a long and celebrated career as one of the more important concert pianists to emerge and performances like this will be considered the launch pads that propels her to the stratosphere.

Everything you say is true, she plays it perfectly with great artistry, but knowing Beethoven’s artistic vision with his beyond human tempo requests, I see this concerto as very similarly envisioned, yet I wasn’t on the edge of my seat

The cadenza starting at 9:14 is one of the best musical moments of the entire 20th century and i would even say in the whole music history... Such a wonderful theme, and with an astonishing performance by Beatrice (complimenti davvero!!)

Grande interpretazione!

This woman is an emmense natural talent. She will be one of tje greats. I have no doubt. Any pianist who is capable of dispatching this concerto like it is a walk in the park is something else. This concerto is even more difficult than Rach 3.

Stupendous. The ability of this artist to concentrate is formidable. Her account of the Goldberg Variations this year in Salon de Provence was nothing short of miraculous. There is, seemingly, nothing she cannot do. One of the finest pianists now before the public.

I forgot to say, I don't think I've ever seen a pianist so relaxed at the keyboard, even in the most demanding passages. Incredible.

It's very impressive. However, I'm not sure if it's preferable. Part of the reason I love Martha so much is how sometimes it felt like the wheels were about to come off. She also was so fast, often the orchestra would be chasing after her which also added to the excitement. But yes, Beatrice Rana is superbly in control here, performing such a notoriously difficult piece...and heartfelt.

@@marcusanthonyPOV Martha had a clear lack of clarity in her performances, too much speed means a loss of precision and bad notes. In my knowledge she never was a great Bach performer......pity, not that her Chopin was the best around too unfortunately.

Beatrice Rana is a incredible artist! Whatever she played: sophisticated, conscious about what she does and how it should sound. For me, the legendary heritage of Aturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Arthur Rubinstein, Emils Gilles and Martha Argerich.

I heard her when she won the Montreal Piano competition in 2011. It took only a few notes for to grab the entire hall. There was this field of calm presence emanating from her. The only other time I felt this was with Hélène Grimaud. If you have a chance to see Beatrice Rana live, don't hesitate!
@99Grigor5 жыл бұрын
Grimaud is a dud. She is very secure and a solid pianist but virtually devoid of color or imagination.

I heard Beatrice perform this wonderful concerto at The Royal Festival Hall on the 27th November with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Susanna Malkki. She gave a brilliant performance. Prodigiously gifted, her musicianship is superlative and her technique is formidable, overcoming the incredibly difficult cadenza in the first movement which, to me, ranks with the cadenza in the first movement of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto no. 2, which I heard performed by the great Stephen Hough in 2009. It is remarkable that Prokofiev was only 19 years of age when he composed it. I will follow her career with great interest, and look forward to hearing her perform in the future.
@hansvanniekerk7686 жыл бұрын
Thanks yes; Wonderful performance ! BUT 19 years ? Sorry, WRONG ! According to Wikipedia he was 21- 22 years. And rewrote it from memory at 32 years; see: 'Sergei Prokofiev (Born 27 April 1891) set to work on his Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 16, in 1912 and completed it in 1913. But this concerto is lost; the score was destroyed in a fire following the Russian Revolution. Prokofiev reconstructed the work in 1923, two years after finishing his Third Concerto, and declared it to be “so completely rewritten that it might almost be considered [Concerto] No. 4”; indeed its orchestration has features that clearly postdate the 1921 concerto. Performing as solo pianist, Prokofiev premiered this surviving “No. 2” in Paris on 8 May 1924 with Serge Koussevitzky conducting. It is dedicated to the memory of Maximilian Schmidthof, a friend of Prokofiev's at the St. Petersburg Conservatory who had killed himself in 1913.'

Beautiful playing. Makes Yuja Wang sound mechanical. And I disagree about Demidenko, who labours the music and is insecure technically at times. In fact Prokofiev asks for an accelerando at the end of the first movement cadenza, and Demidenko gives us the opposite! It's Rana for me!
