Sergey Brin talks about Google Glass at TED 2013

UPDATE: To address comments about Sergey's poor delivery, I want to emphasize that this is NOT a "TED Talk", despite it being recorded during TED conference. It is pretty much a spontaneous appearance to show the latest technology and wasn't prepared or rehearsed. Google Glass is also not available for purchase yet so it is not strictly speaking a product promotion either. This video is posted mostly because it has details about Glass that were unknown or unconfirmed before.

the system is mountable to any set of glasses, prescription or not. from that you simply tell the glass system what number it has to adjust to, such as -5 or 10, whatever it may be. it will adjust by magnifying the optics so you can read, and will have a fail safe so even if they dye and you have them on they we remain at that magnification level.

I've been in the personal computing biz for 37 years, and I'm not a worshiper of technical achievers. But these two guys (Brin and Page) have consistently found a way to realize the organic necessities for creating a humane and intuitively coherent global network. Google search, earth, mail, KZfaq, and now glass have been driven by their desire to do it right rather than 'rich', and we are exponentially better off as a result. Two rare birds in an industry driven mostly by greed and ego.

It's not up there all the time, you probably only see a little digital time clock everything else is controlled by voice and eye position. And since your eyes have to focus on the glass to see it most of the time you only see a little smudge on the upper corner

I agree with you that it's less distracting when you're "actually using" it vs. a cellphone, but when idle, your phone would be stashed away in your pocket, while this is always right there at the corner of your eye! I guess we have to wait and see how it'll fair in practical daily situations.

This is just like what happened when cell phones all started to have cameras placed in them and the smartphones flooded the market. People were freaking out about how no one will have privacy and will be recorded all the time or such. There is already a camera in just about every place you travel. There will be rules passed by places banning these things from certain places like locker rooms and such where cell phones are already not allowed for camera issues.

um uh you know I respect how smart and brave this guy is for following his dreams and creating amazing technology. I find it unfortunate that he seemed uninterested in speaking at TED OR he's not a great public speaker. In either scenario, placing someone who can articulate this vision in a more compelling way, would've maybe been a better idea.

I think everyone kind of forgets about google glass but now that i think of it there's really only one constraint, now that the form factor, camera, and display are probably all stunning. Its how do you communicate with Glass? Assumedly, you communicate through silent speech. But then, how does whatever data is read can translated into the display and the sound? Assumedly, this is a nontrivial problem of both snipping information from the web as well as compiling entirely unique snippets of information. That seems incredibly difficult to do while maintaining the clean, reliable design we all know Google for, especially in a responsive way from data that itself must be interpreted and translated. If it works, Glass will be transormative and its kind of cool the world forgot about it.

You have to be online and in contact with the remote server to do anything with glass, at least that is my interpretation of the mirror api. Which means areas with slow or no internet access will make the thing virtually useless. Unless I'm misunderstanding, this is a huge let down for me, as I was expecting Android like capabilities, as opposed to a dumb terminal on my head.

I'm glad they were able to create this Idea although I thought this up along time ago only for the ability of a camera like a go pro but my idea was like this one being in the form of glasses, they took it to a new level with the share element and I think it's awesome how you can have your ideas materialize in the World with out money but by basically thinking about it, then someone with money will pick up on the vibration and build it which will equate to no money for you still, but it's great.
