You're what I think of as a proper fan. One that can rationally see when an idol is just not cutting it anylonger. I recall when Checo was the master of the long stints and good defensive driving. He may not have had the most aggressive race craft but neither did Bottas but they were both solid for years and Bottas seems to have found his second wind. I am a Ham fan and even I can see how dreadful his season has been and likely due to factors within him. As for the whole blessed thing and calling for diversity, I am cool with that. I'd rather have some of that in the sport over a bunch of egocentric bullies out of touch with times. And yes, he flies on a private jet while trying to save the planet and all that and spends more time at fashion events than in the SIM. Anyways, point is I like the type Checo fans who can admit to now having dropped the ball completely for two seasons. And then we have the other type of Checo fans who hail the fact that he came second last year. They do that with total disregard of how Max's points alone won RB the constructors, how Checo was so close to not even getting that second in the most dominant car (ever?) and had stats in the second part of the season on the level of Stroll.

@@AntiVaganza That's very kind of you. I don't see the point of being in denial about someone you respect, and whose driving you've enjoyed watching for years. I used to love watching Checo drive for RB, knowing that even if he qualified poorly, he'd put on an enjoyable recovery drive. The last two seasons have been pure pain. I had hope at the beginning of this year, but the bouncing-back Checo of old has disappeared. I remember Christian Horner mentioning that Checo was demoralized by seeing Max get so much more out of the car than he could, and it seems like the RB pressure cooker and being Verstappen's team-mate has worn him down. Whatever it is, there's no joy in watching him drive anymore. I know exactly what you mean about the out of touch Checo fans. We're all passionate about the sport, and it's hard to see a favorite driver decline. I understand their mind-set, but there's no future in it, and they're just making his inevitable retirement more difficult to accept and causing a hell of a lot of drama (which is the last thing the F1 fanbase needs). Yes, Checo came in second last year. It's tempting to hold onto that, but when you look at the cold, hard facts, that car was so dominant. He should have been light-years ahead of P3 instead of almost losing P2 to a Mercedes (no offense to Lewis, just recognition of how dominant the RB19 was). His record of 15 points in the last few races and his run of being outqualified by Logan is abysmal. If RB wants a shot at the Constructor's, they need to take a chance on another driver. It sucks for us Checo fans, but that's the way F1 is. I have a lot of respect for Lewis and his accomplishments, and respect for any fan of his who is willing to admit that he isn't perfect and talk about the rough times he's had, as well as the good. I think him calling for more diversity is a positive thing: like Vettel and Senna, he wants to make a change for the better. You said it perfectly: better that than a bunch of egocentric bullies. As for his private jet and the fashion shows, I see no issue with a celebrity enjoying some of the fruits of their labor. He's accomplished so much, and devoted so many years to the sport. Like any human being, there's nothing wrong with him having passions outside of F1. I was thrilled to see Lewis win Silverstone. That must have been a great moment for you. I love to see Lewis break one of Schumi's records, and if Lewis has an eighth title run, I'll be rooting for him... unless, by some miracle, it's against Alonso 🙂 (do I think Alonso will ever have another title run? No. Do I wish it was possible? Yes. I've been dealing with Checo's decline for two seasons. Let me have one ridiculous, delusional dream.)

Even though dunking on Checo has been a favorite pastime of mine since last season, I don't actually hate the guy. I just find him beyond frustrating because he has no excuse performing like that.

Out of context though...F1 bosses really have an eye for young boys.

With you on the weight loss points. But please, look at the stats for last year and you will see Checo didn't do "well enough". I can't recall them perfectly right now, but they are embassaringly bad. When you start comparing podiums of his and qualifying to Max, it's absolutely horrendous how far off he is. Latter part of the season he was bascially not much better than Stroll and overall, Max's points alone would have won the constructor's. Checo had possibly the best car in history and almost didn't make second place. Yes, well enough for weird reasons (money, market influence?) to have him retain the seat but any other driver would likely have gotten the boot for that slump. And he is doing the exact same thing now. I actually got a laugh off of the stats last time I looked into them, they are really that bad. Luckily I am forgetful so I could go back and relive that;)

LawVS posited Checo just does not gel with the RB20 at all. Despite his foibles in form last year, he actually bagged a few early wins with the RB19 and could rise above his slump in the last stage of the championship when it really mattered. I think Law's onto something there.

Checo was a good driver the season before he joined McLaren. He lasted a year and went from good to average. Roll on 10 years and he has slid from average to bad. Having been sacked by every team who employed him. Thank god he still has Calos Slims backing, otherwise he would be in Indy Car.

I stayed at home during uni, which saved me the shitload of expenses that come with a dorm. That also meant I came out with my kidneys not irrevocably fucked from consuming copious cups of instant ramen. Granted, I'm not from the UK or US, so YMMV. More to the point, I've seen other peers face their own serious uni struggles, so I'd rather you not invalidate those simply because they haven't faced your specific struggles.
