Decided to re-do my review of Wolverine and the X-Men, this time a little more in depth, striking at why this short lived series works so well. ALSO !! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone, I hope 2020 treats everyone well.

Just like Spectacular Spider-Man this show deserved another season

Tbh I don't think I want to see Wolverine in the first MCU X-Men film, I hope they just do original 5 members first and then later add Wolverine, but that's my opinion.

This, Avengers : EMH, and Spectacular were the golden age of Marvel Animation after the 90’s. Shame what happened to them after Disney took over, everything after that never stuck out to me in the slightest.

The episode where cyclops goes after mister sinister is a great episode made cyclops badass man also angel is the one who funds the X-men

Fact was that with Jean gone Cyclops wasn't himself, he couldn't lead anyone and Professor X new it hence why he had Wolverine lead. You are right about him not being able to keep the team together, but you go back through the series, it's actually Storm and Emma Frost who keep the team together. It's also worth pointing out that the main character may have been Wolverine but the story was more following Emma.

Scott isn't the only one who leads the X-Men successfully. Storm has also and many times been the leader when Scott isn't around.

This show is so underrated.

This series represents the x men for who they truly are and the plot shows how serious and tragic their story is,the theme is perfect and gives you that cool feeling.

Great video. It's worth mentioning that strom is also a great leader. In the comics, she challenged Cyclops for leadership of the team and won but in the movies and even in this show, she's more like a background character. They really haven't done a good job with her.

This show was my introduction to the X-men. I wasnt allowed to watch the movies when they came out but all the eps of this were streamed on a Australian gov streaming platform called iView and this was long before netflix. I watched the shit out of this show.

I personally disagree with your thoughts on Cyclopes. Sure the movies didn’t do him any favors, but it wasn’t the movies that had him cheat on Jean Grey with Emma Frost or become a psycho dictator. Comic canon Cyclopes did that stuff all by himself. Granted that doesn’t mean that makes Wolverine a good leader. I feel like Storm is the best leader of the X-men.

This show was literally my whole childhood,,, the theme was the most epic one out there

I recently re-watched the show, not having seen it since it came out way back in 2009. Before watching, I remembered it being just good, not great, and I was wondering why as I recalled the highly impressive and immersive serialisation, ambitious mythology, and mature storytelling. Upon viewing it, I realised why - All the things I mentioned were definitely intact and as impressive as ever, but the show lacked strong character development. Characters like Kitty, Bobby, Beast, and Storm have nothing to work with, and I'm not asking for anything remotely heavy, just a one-off episode for the majority that's actually light-hearted, where each character gets to have an arc. Wolverine actually, surprisingly, doesn't have a strong, standout character arc in the season, considering he's the main character. All the characters in the show itself are great - well-defined, diverse, and interesting and engaging in their own right. The character development is something that separates a show like this from a great one like The Spectacular Spider-Man - Both shows have the same strengths, but Spectacular has a large cast of characters, and always makes character development a high priority. It's arguably the biggest joy of watching the show in fact (and there's a lot of competition!), seeing the characters truly be given their due. I greatly enjoyed this show upon re-watch though, it's firmly and clearly a good show. The strengths I've mentioned almost always shine through.

you hit all the main points on the head....i liked the cartoon but i wasnt thrilled with the whole wolverine as leader cause anyone who has followed the X-men knows the best leader they have ever had is Cyclops...with Storm coming a close second. with all that said it was a good cartoon and it looked like season 2 would have really been interesting...

I Hope Wolverine And The X-Men Gets a Revival for Disney+.

An enjoyable X- Men show and my second favorite after Evolution nearly only for its art style. It feels like it pulls it punches in some aspects unfortunately, both with action and some character freedoms. It’s understandable, we can’t see Wolvie or Sabertooth stab mofos on a Nick show. I used to hate Cyclops, so his portrayal used to only feed that hate. Being a Cyclops fan now from reading comics ( he’s my second favorite X-Men after Gambit) it’s a bummer there’s nearly no signs of what makes him dope in this show. Meanwhile Evolution did a sweet job with him. It’s really a shame the show felt like it couldn’t juggle its characters

You never want the guy who just lost the love of his life ( so Scott thought ) to run your team lol I personally think wolverine was a good pick to run the x men. I’m currently rewatching it and it looks to me (so far at least) when he leaves it’s for good reasons. He’s out fighting to protect mutants. Definitely needed more episodes

I was hyped at the tease of Age of Apocalypse at the end of season 1!

This show basically flipped Wolverine's and Cyclops' comic book personalities.

What I appreciated about this show is that it finally got to show us what Emma Frost is about. It shows why she is attracted to Scott Summers (Scott is a good man who lives in a world that loves to destroy good people) and it shows us her unique stance on human-mutant relations. She is the practical moderate to Xavier and Magneto's extremes. She wants the future Xavier wants but she will not wait for the public to give it. If she has to sway public opinion in the favor of mutants, she will. After all, that is what their enemies are doing and why should they act better than humans?

In the Cyclops episode "eXcessive force" when Scott steals Logan's bike, it's a call back to the 1st Fox movie when Logan stole Scott's bike and I love it

This is the show that deserved a second season the most it really looks like they where setting up a Quicksilvers redemption arc it would have been incredible to see since Polaris scarlet witch and quicksilver are my favourite sibling duo I wish we got to see it happen

Emma is the best thing about this show. She was so good

Fiege said that whatever they are doing to X-Men, it will be different than what they have done before. If this fits to the "what they have done before" category, then the MCU X-Men may not be the same as this. For better or worse idk. As an X-Men fan I'm really excited for X-Men's mcu age but now X-Men is doing awesome on the comics.

X-Men animated series and X-Men Evolution are the best shows ever.

I liked Batman and Wolverine (They were my favourite DC and MARVEL characters) when I was younger but after watching Smallville and X-Men: Evolution I now prefer Superman and Cyclops or more accurately I love the characters of Clark Kent and Scott Summers and funnily enough my favourite female comic book characters after watching Smallville and Evolution are Lois Lane and Jean Grey

This show needed a second season. I understand it was a cash grab but, damn its up there with Avengers EMH and Young Justice for me. I needed sooooo much more.

X-men just works better as a show for me than being a movie franchise cause so many characters in the movies are just there to show off their powers. We really need a new X-Men cartoon with multiple seasons and maybe a rotating cast like the comics

Wolverine: Main character Cyclops and Emma Frost: Pull their weight, but mostly Jean-centric. Beast, Shadowcat, and Iceman--Shown a lot, but given little development (though to be fair, they're pretty great characters as is). Rogue & Nightcrawler--Had their own story arcs before becoming background characters. Storm & Angel--got one episode centered around them, then became background characters (loved them as a couple, and sad because the Age of Apocalypse could've been their gateway to more screentime and development). Forge--And where were you the whole time?! And plus I was mad that there were many episodes where characters would be seen but only spoke once or not at all. Honestly, I love this show, and while Evolution is my favorite due to it's concept, WATXM had the best overall storyline to me. It deserved at least 3 seasons.

You forgot to mention he did get to lead his own version of the X-Men and Scott and him had a fight over how to teach the students how to beat X-Men the storyline was called schism

I like Cyclops, he got screwed royally in the movies and in the comics, for a couple of years he was even treated as a terrorist. But I don't agree that Wolverine is not suited to lead, he is aware that he is not the best for the job and doesn't really want to do it. But when push comes to shove he comes through and can get the job done.He carried the torch when Cyclops was made into a villain, heck he even founded The Jean Grey School for Higher Learning and was the headmaster.

I personally love this show, and the “don’t go chasing ghosts, cause that won’t fly with me” isn’t really all that hypocritical in this show as it’s never really Logan going after the ghosts of his past so much as his enemies crawling out of the woodwork.

I hated how Storm always ended up defeated

It was a good show. Its nice to see someone else like wolverine or storm lead the xmen, instead of professor x quest for peace or scott and Jean's love story.

Storm is never done right, and no one realizes.

To be fair with Logan’s hipocrasy, he didn’t do it that often once he rejoined the group due to rogue being pissed at him for it, and also, he only did the hulk mission because if nick fury and with the weapon x stuff, Emma told him to go so when he did do it, there was more to it though with Scott, his whole chase for Jean was kind of ruining him and making it hard for him to be a member of the team.

Honestly, as a guy who is similar to Logan in few ways, i am a hot head, i dislike alot of people, i am a loner at heart, i make impulsive decisions based on feelings and emotions....and i am pretty short for my age, but that's not that important, i know that even if i can have some good ideas on how to lead, i don't want to be the leader, because i know that at heart, i am not the best choice for that role. Having Logan as the leader isn't a good idea, and as much as i like his character, he isn't a leader.

i just wanna see a X men movie/ Tv show about the team not just one specific member bcz everyone should feel like they matter and i would have the lineup be wolverine, cyclops, Jean grey, iceman, shadowcat, colossus, angel, storm, beast, nightcrawler , Rogue and Obv professor X

Yeah I truly loved how everything was connected somehow like they were puzzle pieces ready to connect to one another. Which is why I feel like umbrella Academy did so well too.

This show was a fundamental part of my childhood, so it's really cool to here someone talk about it, especially in such a relatively recent video! I didn't really notice it as a kid, but I think you're right about the fact that the show is so Wolverine-centric is unfortunate. The moments I remember most from watching it as a kid are all the smaller personal moments between characters who weren't Wolverine.

This was a great X-Men series that should've NEVER been cancelled! Wolverine was getting the spotlight in this one as the leader of the X-Men and I was so glad too. I really wish they'd bring this back for a second season cause this was really NOT OVER yet!

X-Men Evolution is the most X-Men feeling series to me mainly because the team chops and changes and they all work together under Professor X’s mentorship and Cyclops’ leadership with Wolverine being Cyclops’ tactical mentor also there are actual students going around the grounds and not too many students to still make them feel like an isolated group X-Men TAS gets stale after a while as despite the great comic book storylines the team chops with members sitting on the bench but it never updates like the institute doesn’t feel like a school because there are no students Wolverine and the X-Men feels like a Wolverine series that has a solid team that has characters coming in and out like Angel, Rogue and Nightcrawler however the problem is Cyclops isn’t the leader

I liked this series and still miss it whenever this show comes up. What could have been with Apocalypse in season 2. Wolverine was a reluctant leader as he was just trying to put the team back together and Cyclops was still mourning the loss of Jean Grey. Wolverine may have had more screen time and been a little more calmer than usual but i like the fact that at 40 years old back then that i didn't have to go through a seasons of teenage CW /WB X-MEN going through puberty again like X-MEN EVOLUTION. As i watched WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN it felt like this was a grown-up X-MEN series just the 90's version. I hope Marvel Studios continues this theme.

Logan and Scott's dynamic is that they are completely different, thats why their colors are swapped, they are different but they are on the same team thats why the colors are the same yellow and blue

One episode had a joke that make me laugh. It had something to do with Wolverine, Rouge and The Blob.

This show was one of my favorites growing up because of how serious and complex its story was compared to others I saw, how every episode besides one's primarily centered on Logan's past all built towards every element of the story colliding and coming together like a puzzle. 4:53, That and the portrayal and performances of each character, as well as the animation and action, were consistently entertaining to see.

in case u dont know, this show is based loosely off the astonishing x-men comics. i highly recommend reading them as they are a lot of fun.

When this show originally premiered, I kept hoping they've reveal that we were actually watching the grown up version of the X-Men: Evolution characters. Of course it wasn't meant to be. And you're right, this is more a Wolverine show than an X-Men show. I find it good enough. But I also personally rank it behind X-Men TAS and X-Men: Evolution. Great essay, Super Frame!

Listen I get that cyclops fans feel like the movies have been a 20 year long smear campaign on your favorite x-man. I get it and i actually kinda agree. But saying shit like "only cyclops can lead the x-men" is a ridiculous over correction. Wolverine has lead the x-men in the comics before. So has Ororo and even havoc. Hell when you consider other offshoot teams the list of great leaders in the x-men universe is pretty long. It's not JUST cyclops.

If this series have continue longer it could have been one of Marvel's best adaptations of the X-Men along with the 90's series & Evolution. But the nerve of it being cancelled due to toy sales, is enough to pissed off any newcomer to this series. I know nowadays current Marvel animated shows aren't liked by fans, but if another worthy X-Men series ever does happen again here's hoping it will last longer.

I quite like Logan's treatment of Scott. He's in charge now, doesn't really like it, hasn't really got a clue what he's doing and has decided to just be a "Do as I say, not as I do" type. I do agree that Logan sometimes got a bit too much focus, but the episode with the Hulk is skippable, so it's not as bad as it could have been. We also get the Weapon-X episode, and I love seeing that. I also somehow completely missed the Silver Samurai episode, so I'm also a little biased that way. And characters such as Gambit, Nightcrawler, Magneto's daughter that isn't Scarlet Witch, literally everyone in the Brotherhood (Except Tremor or whatever his name was) get development ranging from great to excellent! I've also heard that this was planned as a three-series show. But as the first didn't sell enough merchandise, the second got cut, spelling the end for the third.

I really couldn't watch more than the first few episode, I like Wolverine like I like Raphael for the TMNT, as a hot-headed friendly foil to the leader and It was clear very early that the other characters were sidelined here and Wolverine would be front and center. What really got me out of the show however was that it clearly wants to tackle serialized storytelling from the get go which is a double-edged sword has it failed to intrigue me more than on a surface level, and lacked the kind of self-contained episodes that can really help grasp what you're gonna get here. As you said in the video it seems preoccupied to look like a X-Men show while being a Wolverine show and I just didn't care for that.

I feel if MCU does use this show as template. they should draw most heavily from Sentinels in this show. Sentinels were personally my favorite part as they are machine and surpass both man and mutant. But they still has a drive to evolve themselves. What it means to be a true Sentinel.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I always caught this show on TV and it’s what made me really love the X-Men and then the movies.

Even if they put Scott back in action,this show would still be awesome regardless of who leads.

I just finished this show today after being lucky and finding the complete series at goodwill! Went in completely blind because I've never seen any x-men media besides a wolverine camo in another show.

Heck this show also hinted to my girl x-23 aka Laura which was really awesome and she did actually show up in the final episode of this series which was really awesome and badass

Just to point out real quick, Professor X's mind isn't transported through time. Xavier is placed in a coma & awakens years later. THEN he telepathically projects his thoughts into the past to communicate with the X-Men. Also, I agree that there's a reason that Scott Summers is the X-Men's leader, but that doesn't mean he's the only one who is capable of leading the team. I do see what you're saying about Logan "never" being around, at least, not as much as the other X-Men, & he is rather hypocritical in the scene with Cyclops. However, the hypocrisy of Logan's statement is acknowledged in the show, even if it's never genuinely resolved. But, regardless, I still think it's interesting to see Wolverine having to step up to the role of leader in this show, particularly because it takes him out of his standard role. Also also, I agree with you about how great the plot twists are. I really enjoy those elaborate plotlines, too. And even just the clip of Emma & Scott seeing Jean as the Phoenix gave me chills. But two things you forgot to mention is how great Nightcrawlers storyline with Wanda is & how awesome the animation looks.

Everyone on Reddit tells me that the original X-men show hasn't aged well at all and that Wolverine and the X-Men is the best one. I simply don't see it and it has a lot to do with what you say in your video. I am just glad that there are people that agree with me because I cannot for the life of me, watch and enjoy Wolverine and the X-Men for what it represents. The original and Evolution (okay I can understand if no one agrees with the latter) are the best and TAS happens to be one of the golden standards of what a Superhero show is suppose to be like. I really loved that this show used Emma Frost so effectively. She's been a main player on the xmen for about 20 years now, but I feel like this is the only non comic media that's ever really got that. I hope we see her in future mcu properties. Also, storm really needs to get some focus. She used to be marvels first lady

Something the creators did a fantastic job with in this series was creating a unique fusion of elements from both the comics and movies, while simultaneously giving it its own identity.

There's no such thing as filler and its good to see things that arent just the end of the world.

Ever since the first X-Men movie Marvel really shifted gears in terms of who to focus on, after that movie it was all about Wolverine, and Wolverine is pretty much the poster child for all things X-Men nowadays, but as awesome as Wolverine is he really should be a supporting character, that's something that the 90's X-Men series understood and it worked really well for them, Cyclops is the one that should be the leader, he's the one who always guides everyone with a moral compass and always has the best leadership skills, so trying to make Wolverine the head honcho for all things X-Men just doesn't really work

This is my favorite x-men animated show that's ever been! I know that might sound like blasphemy to some who think the 90s x-men is the best and don't get me wrong that show is good but in my opinion it hasn't aged well at all. But I love this show because it has a really good over arcing narative but still takes time to do episodes that are more self contained (i know you didn't like that but those episodes were often my favorite) I like those episodes because they give you a bit of a breather from the larger picture to introduce many great characters and storys that wouldn't have fit otherwise. I love that we got an episode with psylocke, but it bummed me out that she had such a small role. I agree that there was too much Logan. I wish they would have given some of his screen time to other characters but the worst most unforgivable thing to happen with this show was that it didn't get renewed for a season 2. That end scene in the last episode that showed that season 2 was going to be age of apocalypse. That was like a dagger to my little fanboy heart. Im so mad that we won't ever get to see what would have happened next. Now that Disney owns the rites to the x-men again I really hope they will do a new animated x-men show of the same or possibly better quality. I love watching the x-men in animation and I really hope we get more.

Absolutely one of my favorite Marvel animated shows, it feels so good to watch. I mean sure, they got a rated R hero being the main character of a kids show, but it works

I loved it upon my initial watch in 2009, although I always had issues with the focus on Wolverine. Upon a recent rewatch I lost interest toward the middle and skipped to the last few episodes. Insightful review. Thanks

Interesting points. I think the basis of the video is the POV from xmen the animated series or a general knowledge base of xmen. The show was named wolverine and the xmen and stayed true to that. While doing so we had a multitude of characters that I think were done in a interesting way. There was reason for the choices of each one and by the end I wanted more. This show also linked to the avengers I think.

I enjoyed WATXM as a kid, but rewatching as an adult after having seen every episode of both TAS and Evolution, I found it had very little to offer me. It's kind of like the Marvel Equivalent of the 2004 DC cartoon _The Batman;_ good voice acting and animation, with a few interesting new concepts, but the stories and characters have been done better in other adaptations.

If i were to change one thing about the show I'd do a bit of switch. Logan can still have the intro with the Family being Kidnapped but then he realised he cant lead the team so he seeks out Scott and Scott has to lead the team and Logan helps him to not abandon the X-Men like he has so many times before. The two learn to work together and grow a genuine respect for one another. The Wolverine filler Episodes can still happen as alot of screen time will now be taken by Scott doing alot of what Logan was doing in the original show so he does need to screen time of his own. But other than that the show is great and i decided to rewatch it because it's been years and the kid inside me is hyped for MCU X-men.
