Y'all keep mentioning Mistborn but Mistborn was good the entire time lol so it wouldn't count for this, for me. Plus the first book is my favorite. This topic is for series that start at meh or bad and get better... :)

Thoughts on Tomes hahaha I was going to ask you this. The Final Empire was Rough. Soooooo tropey, way too much boring magical flying that isn't flying. Love this topic though. You've already done the opposite, series that end badly, right?

I would say the Raven Cycle gets better and better, even though the finale might not be the best one in the series, I think it really grows as it goes on. I would also say the same about the Percy Jackson series, the last book really delivered on the action and build up of the other four.

Protector of the small quartet. Part of it is the author grows as an author through the series, part because she gets to have more space to write during the series, part is the series grows during the series. I love that series sooooooo much.

I didn't LOVE Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Book 1) the first time I read it. It took me a few months to pick up the rest of the series, and when I did I flew through it. To this day, Dreams of Gods and Monsters is probably my favorite finale of all time. It blew me away. I recently re-read the whole series and knowing the story in context it made me fall SO deeply in love with book 1 (and the series as a whole). I couldn't stop crying. Re-reading DOSAB and reading Strange the Dreamer has solidified Laini Taylor as one of my most cherished and adored writers. Your comments on The Magicians makes me want to give it another go. I couldn't get thorough the first one.

the only series that i've fully read and can wholeheartedly say that it gets better is the gallagher girls series - the first book is meh, but if you push through that one, the reast just keep getting better and better. it's a very important series for me, it's very "girls supporting girls" centered and it's taught me a lot. i still believe that it's enjoyable to anyone, and that it's not just middlegrade!

The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews gets sooo much better as it goes on. Book nine, Magic Binds, absolutely destroyed me. It was devastating. (It was also FABULOUS!) Book one, though, Magic Bites. . .when I first read it, I was not that impressed (still gave it four stars, but it was definitely not the greatest of first books). Nowadays, though, rereading book one? It too is fabulous. This is definitely a book that is much (MUCH!) better when you reread it after you've read a few more books into the series. Book ten is expected to be the final Kate Daniels book. I am nervous about it, but Ilona Andrews has never let me down, so I'm hopeful that book ten will wrap things up very nicely. (Book nine, when I first read it I wondered if "the battle" would be in the next book, but Ilona Andrews somehow worked it in there and it was wonderful.) I'm pretty sure that I have other series I could recommend that are great, or get greater, through to the end (or most recent release), but . . . Kate Daniels. I really love it. 😊❤

Gone and Daughter of Smoke and Bone are both series that get better as they go on, but one that surprised me was the House of Night series, because it's consistently good, even though it's basically the book equivalent of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

A series that gets better with every book (not completely, but the finaly is amazing and the build up and ending are incredibly well crafted in my opinion and they absolutely doen't get worse by the book or after the second one) is the Balad of Sir Benfro. One of our main characters is a dragon. The first book is definitely slow because of huge world, character and plot building parts and explaining the current situation for all our POV's. There are ten or more throughout the 5 book series. My god that ending was satisfying and heart-breaking and lovely and a little bit of a tear-jerker and soo feel good. JUSTICE!!! It has a lot of war scheming, plotting, intrigue and a split world (which is important enough to warrant the title of book four: The Broken World). That one is such a recommendation. I really need to reread it soon, feel all the love for it again

'the First Law-Trilogy' by Joe Abercrombie the first one set the tone, the second upped the ante and when the third one comes around you feverishly turn the pages and pray your favourite character is still alive. 'The Fey and the Fallen' duology (Of Blood and Honey and 'Blue Sky from Pain) by Stina Leicht. The second one blows the ,already amazing, first one straight out of the water. 'The Eternal Sky Trilogy' by Elizabeth Bear. Not only is the setting non-western but every volume just gets better. 'The Lightbringer series' by Brent Weeks granted the finale is not out, yet but every book before doubled the stakes and the twists are almost impossible to figure out. I can't wait for the last one to arrive. 'The Ancillary Series' by Anne Leckie. This series is hard to describe but the final book was so great it gave me the worst book hangover of my life.

The Lumatere Chronicles by Melina Marchetta. The first books is good but the second and third pick up with the secondary character from book one and just explode. I love it so much. I've had the 3rd Magicians book for about a month now and I'm going to start it today. I do agree that the second Magicians book was better than the first. For series I think getting better over time, I agree that it's hard to think of examples. I think Discworld might fit the bill. There are so many books, so it isn't a perfect climb up in quality, but overall I think the series got better over time.

Jim Butcher'sThe Dresden Files is one of my favorites! I think of it as a grown up Harry Potter in the US. The stakes are high, the sass it on point, and our hero gets his ass handed to him on the regular. In think there's 14 books on the series and each one has gotten better. Kim Harrison's The Hallows set where the magical community is present because humans were dying from GMO tomatoes and they helped humanity survive. It follows a witch, vampire, and a pixy in their lives and adventures. The series is completed and we'll worth the read.

The Chaos Walking trilogy gets better with every book. I understand why a lot of people stop after the first book, but I personally loved all three and how the writing matched the main characters reading and writing skills and how they improved as the story went on. Do duologies count as series? Because I would say the Six of Crows duology was straight up great from start to finish. I'm actually starting to really get into the duology format because they tend to avoid some of the very common pacing issues and "filler" chapters/storylines that often crop up in trilogies/quintets/longer book series.

I think the books in the His Dark Materials trilogy got better as they went along, but I read them back to back in an omnibus so I'm not super clear on what happened in which book. I just know it had a VERY slow start and the got better and better as the story progressed. I would also say Percy Jackson fits the bill for this, although the fourth book is probably my favourite and not the fifth one, I do really like the fifth one as a conclusion, and the first book is definitely the weakest in my opinion. I also love that the books are mostly set a year apart from each other so you can really see the characters grow.

Whilst watching I was considering the series that get better that I've read, and I have to say I've come up short as well! The Lunar Chronicles is one of my favourite series, but Winter just didn't pack a big enough punch. I think I'd probably classify The Hunger Games as improving with each book - I know Mockingjay isn't for everyone, but I think it was a perfect end to the trilogy! X

I thought about doing this topic, but I just struggled with finding series that fit. I typically either feel like there's a lull in the middle of the series, or like the series gradually takes a slight plunge. Plus I try not to even start series that I'm pretty sure I won't like right away. I feel like this is a cheat because there are only two books out so far, but the Stormlight Archive is a great example. Also maybe the original Sword of Shannara trilogy (though I didn't like book through quite as much as book 2)?

Thanks for this video, I'm going to give it a try and read the next books of the Girl of Fire and Thorns series- I was one of the people who wasn't that impressed after reading the first one and I kind of quit.. I mean it had potential but it was kind of wasted in my opinion? The main character dealt with dangerous situations waay to easily like it was nothing- killing a supposedly lethal animagi in his tent after being captured, surrounded by enemies, and escaping without anyone noticing and basically without getting hurt.. what? Really? Also, the death of her love interest- lol I forgot his name, the young boy who saved her several times- was done badly in my opinion. Not that it was a bad thing overall, but he died in ridiculous circumstances- at least I felt like it. And omg, the final scene- she "prayed" and her magic unleashed itself and just saved the day, killing the enemies. Again, too easy. I want something more spectacular. I want to see more effort. Please tell me such things are fixed in the next books (and sorry for this long comment) :D

The Lotus war trilogy by Jay Kristoff, omg, is my favorite series but the first book is so meh, not the best, but OMG, the second is better and the THIRD😰. You need that series in your live.

I've begin Falling Kingdoms but -spoilers- i've found hard to look past in love with his sister eventhoug not his sister thing, it's strange because i have read a song of ice and fire and there is something similiar but i couldn't do with these characters -spoilers- I don't know should i countinue?

Slight spoilers That plot doesn't really go anywhere (it's definitely one sided and is only really in book one (maybe slightly in book 2, but I think it's mostly gone by then)) So if that's the only thing bothering you, you would probably be fine continuing?

hloys like someone else said, that plot line gets completely dropped and is not a thing at all in the rest of the series

Definetly the Lorien Legacies series. The first book is by far the worst, and honestly kind of dry. But after the second it's amazing. I see a lot of people read the first one and then quit (which I would've too if I hadn't been on vacation with only the first 2 books in the series) because they didn't like, but they take such a turn in book two it starts to feel like a different series to the first book entirely.

Someone please tell me why I should keep reading Girl of Fire and Thorns, I seriously did not like the first book, and thats pretty rare for me. The whole concept about weight just seemed excessive and took up too much of the conversation.

The first book is the weakest of the series but everything starts to come together in the second book and that's where the series actually takes off.

That's so odd because I feel like the second books (usually in trilogies) are reaaaaaaallllyyyyy bad. They always drag and feel like filler in books

I used to feel that way but in the last 3 years or so, most of the second books in series have been my favorites!

I see people talking about Mistborn, but am I the only one who thought the books actually got worse (and more predictable) as the went on? Now, I haven't read the Alloy Era books yet, so I cant talk about those, but the fisrt trilogy... Yeah, not a fan of where that went.
