We build all tube EQ1a clones with hand wired and soldiered bread board electronics with solid state power supply or the original tube power supply , and with that being said I have bought their SSL bus compressor clone and their CV comp compressor. I LOVE Them. Also huge CAPI fan. Have A tone of CAPI pre's in my lunch boxes and and CAPI compressors along side my API compressors.

For mic pres, I am using AML ez1073 pres in 500 series and can highly recommend them. Can be purchased in kit form or assembled by AML.

Klark Teknik was acquired by Music Tribe/ Uli Berhinger in 2009 and the main asset that Music Tribe reportedly desired was it's pro audio brand recognition. New products are developed and built the Behringer way. Some customers like their business practices and some dislike them.

Hello Barry, nice advices. I really encourage you to get into GA a little more, I consider GA way better than warm audio. Their La2a is incredible. Also their clones of the 1073 mic pres are great. I have APIs, Warms, GAPs, Wes, I’m happy with the sound of all, in their price range. GAP is not in the same category of KT. Thank you for your video, I’m following you! Cheers

Hi Barry, love all your content thanks. This series has come at a great time for me as did your previous series of videos on hosted plugin hardware systems (UA, antelope etc) vs the new more powerful computers like Apple silicon. Just been going through a home studio upgrade over the last 2 years, as-and-when I have been able to afford it and this kind of input is invaluable as it helps frame some of the key questions I need to be asking and it can save me making costly mistakes. I am a life-long guitarist, singer and songwriter and arranger and I have dabbled for my whole life in music production. So, I had good sound sources but the recording gear was getting pretty dated. This has meant for me upgrading (in no particular order): interface, monitors,mic, computer, acoustic treatment and physical desk. I have got pretty serious and produced a lot of music since the pandemic hit and have gone deep down the mixing and mastering rabbit hole and tried many different techniques and some different software plugins but now I am starting to look ways at bringing new character and life to my recordings using analogue outboard gear, so again this series from you couldn’t have come at a better time. I thought of starting with a budget analogue bus compressor and have been looking at the Warm Audio SSL clone. I noticed that whilst you mentioned Warm Audio’s 1176 and Opto compressors you didn’t mention this one in your rundown. It maybe cos you have leapfrogged this budget option in favour of higher quality alternatives but if you have any insight into this one then it would be good to hear it ( no worries if not, you did clearly say that you haven’t tried everything!) anyway I appreciate what you do on your channel. Keep up the great work!

The GAP Comp2A is great, I own 2 I own 2 of the following WA gear: WA76, EQP-WA, WA412. (3) WA73-EQ, WA BUS COMP and WA87. Used DBX160X's are good as well. One brand that would fit in the range is Heritage Audio.

I've been purchasing many Stam Audio units lately, there is something not that common about them which is that they actually mention the brands and origin of the main components they are using (transformers, capacitors, capsules, op amps, carbon resistors, nos tubes, etc.) which tells you they have nothing to hide in terms of quality. I would myself place them head by head with audioscape, or even at a higher rank with some units.

Hi Barry! I own a BLA/Black Lion Audio B12A right now.. i haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I bought it because I can't afford the 'real deal' (in my opinion).. the API 3124v.. BLA was a grand, API is like $3500 these days.. geez! ouch! but yea.. i was sort of surprised to not see any mentions of the BLA brand on this video. I love all your videos/talks.. nothing but love for all you do, as you provide so much good/pro discussion.. the videos have become like a comfort thing for me, just to hear someone talking about the things i'm interested in for my budding home studio setup. I think the part that made me surprised was that the BLA logo was in the video still / photo right behind your head!.. haha. i thought 'oh, surely he will give his two cents on the BLA brand then..!' and i was genuinely curious to hear if you think BLA is good or bad, or mid-way/bleh.. lol.. totally not complaining, just more-so curious of your thoughts on the brand or wondering if you've dabbled or own any of their pieces. I have never owned a real API unit to compare the BLA one too, but they seem to have decent ratings and such. i have heard good and bad things, mostly good. i like that most of their stuff is made in Chicago, and also seems pretty solidly build, with metal knobs/panels, etc. I want to like Warm Audio so badly but i bought 2 units from them for a friend's studio, and BOTH had issues.. major ones where we had to send them back for repair/replacement. i must have gotten really unlucky with Warm, and i want to give them another chance. but anyways, thanks for all the cool content, man.. and i hope you survived Hurricane Ian with little to no damages to your livelihood and/or property! cheers, be safe and keep on streaming the goodness! :)

I just recently got into Stam Audio with their brand new 500 series 1176 Blue Stripe (I received it in 4 days after making my final payment!) I put a preview video on my channel about it but so far from my testing, I think it sounds amazing! Really wanna try more of their gear now! Bae is another good company from my experience. I love my Drawmer 1978 stereo tone shaping FET compressor. I bought a Warm Audio Bus-comp2 (SSL g bus clone) and found that it had a terrible tilt boost from the mids up to the high frequencies. Completely unusable. I have had such a rigmarole with sending it back for warranty, which is perhaps more of a problem in Australia. I Haven’t even heard back from the distributor since it was sent there ages ago. Whilst this is probably just an anomaly and bad luck with this particular unit, still worth noting that if you aren’t in the USA, Warm audio might not actually be the safest bet. Love the WA73! Recently switched to the AMS Neve 1073 and it certainly had an edge. But i will still always recommend warm audio to people! Had I not had experience with the warm audio stuff.. I wouldn’t appreciate the real deal as much

Could you do a Neve 1073 Battle series..”Legacy vs. Clones” (Rupert Neve Designs and AMS Neve vs. Warm, Heritage etc.)..I know there’s hundreds of videos here and there but a really detailed historical take with the preamp shootouts and maybe even interviews and commentary from RND personnel would be awesome..if at all possible🤓

Hi Barry, thanks for your advice! As I live in Brazil and I'm setting up my home studio from scratch, I can't afford high-quality equipment right now, so I need to stick with mid-level stuff. My idea is to set up a two channel rack for tracking, and keep the mixes ITB, and maybe getting something for the mixbus in the future. I'm mainly starting with Warm Audio, but I can also find some similarly priced Golden Age and Fredenstein gear here. By the way, do you have any thoughts on the last one (Fredenstein)? Barry, would you mind giving your honest opinion on coming OTB and potentially staying OTB all the way to mastering? Basically by tracking as you normally would, then running your signal into an analog summing mixer(neve or Dangerous), then into your bus comp (Warm Audio or Dangerous or whatever), but instead of returning back ITB, you send that ( with all of its glorious analog processing) to a hi def recorder such as the Tascam DA 3000, or the Tascam DR- 40X 4 channel, and then send that to mastering. I believe that it would really help new people (me 😊) to see a video of the “actual” steps in layman’s terms on how to go from tracking, to mixing, and ultimately into your bus processor( warm audio eq and bus comp for example) and then how to preserve the mix further by not returning to the box until after mastering. Your thoughts on this? And thank you so much for the videos. Very very informative. The Dangerous 2bus+ is on its way. And your thoughts on not returning ITB right away? Thanks, man

EL8X is a gem. MIKE-E (fullmod) is a sleeper especially w/ LIL-FREQ (fullmod).

Do we really need this hardware processing madness? Anything you can do using hardware, can be achieved by using software - more or less. And the software can do much more than emulating hardware… Said with love for the music. 🙂
