During the EFG London Jazz Festival we spent a beautiful Sunday morning in the Oak Room at the Hospital Club capturing some intimate performances. Here's one of two tracks we recorded with Theo Croker and his band.

Saw Theo in Ann Arbor at the Blue Llama Club...........could have listened all night to this fine jazz musician.

Im amazed at his nice tone and flexibility while playing in the red, not too many players are capable of playing clear like him in the red. I used to play in the red of my top lip, a really strong, loud, clear, lead player noticed my range and endurance issues and helped me correct this, by having me place much more top lip in the mouthpiece, and play in the red of my bottom lip untill my top lip was strong enough to stay all the way in the cup of the mouthpiece, without any red touching the top of the rim of my mouthpiece. Once I mastered that, I began placing bottom lip all the way in the cup as well. My tone , range, and endurance have imroved insanely, now I can actually play the licks I want, and as high as I want with a really nice tone and not have to sacrifice any notes at all. The whole process took at least 5 months, and I had been playing in the red of my top lip for over 15 years. The transitional period felt painfully, and embarrassingly long, very embarrassingly long, but it was so worth it. Im continuing to play jazz mainly, and am capable of now playing lead on a huge Schilke 18 orchestrial mouthpiece with absoulutely no range, tone, or endurance issues. Praise God. Long tones for an hour a day helped speed the process along.

Wow it’s cool to hear this. Your whole comment describes everything I am experiencing in my playing right now. My process started a year ago. I struggled terribly with my endurance and playing in the higher register because of this same thing. I can hear how much progress I have made so far with it only being a year. Thanks for sharing this.

Wow man! You just gave me hope! I just startet changing my embouchere exactly how you describe, and after 2 weeks I still can’t even play the G in the staff probably. I hope long notes help, but please write me some tips and exercises to do, I can’t find anything about it. My email dan.hejslet@gmail.com
