A quick video on Serotonin Syndrome. The classic case involved Libby Zion who died when this condition went unrecognized. She was on a MAOI and was given demerol for abdominal pain. Besides demerol (long half life) tramadol is another pain killer implicated in this syndrome. Use caution when combining serotoninergic drugs in your patients. Watch the video and save a life!

I had serotonin Syndrome after accidentally overdosing on SSRI's and it was easily one of the worst experiences of my life. I was in the hospital for about 12-14 hours shaking non-stop, vomiting, and having some of the worst thoughts I could imagine. I could describe it as going to hell and back. Take care of yourselves.

MultiFandom McDobs hi currently going through this. I don’t believe mine is nearly as serve. The first day was horrible but I’m on day three still dealing with off and mouth tremors but I can usually control them. Until this morning my eyes were extremely dilated and the first night I had major cold sweats and super anxiety. But that went away I’m roughly 80% back to normal. How long it take to pass for you?

September 18, 2022 is my second birthday. My symptoms lasted for 20 hours, I passed out countless times, I was shaking UNCONTROLLABLE, I had diarrhea, my heart wanted to jump out, but at the same time I couldn't stand on my feet. When I was conscious I prayed to God to forgive my sins if this is the time for me to leave. After everything, they told me in the emergency room that it was a panic attack, countless infusions, because I was in two hospitals. I knew it wasn't because I was passing out all day. I was on anti-depressants and migraine medication, both of which have high doses of serotonin. I thank God for a second chance, and I am afraid of the incompetence of our doctors. 18.09. is the date of my patron saint and I know who saved my life then. Since then, I've been fighting and struggling with panic attacks, but that day was not one of them.

I was prescribed to take zoloft which I took regularly, but one day I wanted to take a recreational dose of cough medicine (More specifically DXM) and what I didn't know was that it would cause serotonin syndrome. My head filled with the sensation of pins and needles and I felt myself become euphoric and confused but KNEW I was overdosing or something was wrong so I called for 911 and went straight to the hospital where I spent the next two weeks recovering and trying to remember what had just happened. It was very scary and I still have a faint memory of my leg spasms and vomiting on my way to the hospital. BE CAREFUL EVERYONE AND DONT BE AN IDIOT LIKE ME.

I nearly died from serotonin syndrome I had a massive seizure at home, when I came round I was delirious and scared so much that I ran away from the paramedics thinking they where going to get me. Anyway I went to hospital eventually and had another seizure in A and E lasting 20 mins. I was put into a induced coma and in that time I had double kidney failure and a collapsed lung and wasn't improving until the the 3rd week of being in a coma the doctor decided to give me steroids that helped bring me round. No one at the hospital had a clue what I had and it wasn't until 8 weeks later that I was diagnosed with serotonin syndrome. It ruined my body is had to learn how to walk again 3 months later I'm still struggling with my arms.

I have seen a person on mdma and he got into a really confused state. He was talking to people that weren't in the room and he talked to me as if we were still at a place prior to dosing. It was really scary and I wondered how the hell this neurological phenomenon can be explained. Made me wonder whether it was serotonine syndrome. Luckily he got a clear head after like 45 minutes.

For me I accidentally mixed Ayahuasca with MDMA. DMT from Ayahuasca can stay in the system for weeks in low doses! MDMA can also be stored in Fat cells and can be released when fasting! It was very scary psychologicaly. Took a REALLY tiny amount of MDMA (a few grains) 1 week after an Ayahuasca trip - the two interacted and had a really INTENSE and scary trip. Feel very lucky to be alive and not suffer permanent psychosis. Took me 1 year with recurring PTSD episodes to fully recover.

hey have been on remeron 30mg for 4 weeks now and lyrica 50mg 3 times a day 2 weeks now and was put on sertaline 3days ago all for GAD and panic disorder and MDD, have been feeling some what better since last week, my question is how do i rule out the symptoms of having a panic attack from serotonin syndrome as my panic symptoms are quite similar and was experiencing heavy twitching from the back before i was put on lyrica, and the past 3 days on sertaline my stomachs not great and feeling at times an increase in anxiety(in a speedy way) but it seems to cut off and peak rather then starting a full on panic attack, consulted my gp today and said if i still felt like this in a week to come back, im genuinely worried and need an other opinion from any one willing to give one, in regards to continuing the sertaline,, also the psych who prescribed the sertaline wants to take me off lyrica and told me the drugs would compliment each other? in regards to the next 3 weeks until the drug takes full affect,like i really do not wanna go back to being crippled by panic, but sure dont want to die any advice would be gratefully appreciated

First off, your chances of death from these drugs re serotonin is nil. Remeron (aka Mirtazapine) doesn't increase serotonin levels anyway (maybe 30% which in the world of serotonin levels = NOTHING - you can walk around the block and increase serotonin more than this). Sertraline is an SRI and an NRI, so could cause some jitteriness, but if it is a real bother tell your psychiatrist and see if a change is in order. I fail to see in what way pregabalin (lyrica) and sertraline (you said compliment each other but I suspect you meant are additive or potentiative to each other).

@kaythreefox6005
@kaythreefox6005 3 жыл бұрын
If you take a drug that interacts(reacts badly) with your antidepressants (SSRI + MAOI or SSRI+SSRI and some muscle relaxers do it) you could have too much of a chemical called serotonin in your brain. This chemical is usually inhibited (not allowed) to be reabsorbed into a synapse (one end of a nerve)by those medications, which helps with depression, anxiety and what not. When the meds interact and cause too much of serotonin to stay in your brain, you can get serotonin syndrome. Your muscles may get tight, you'll start shaking, you might have higher anxiety and get mad easy and you wont be in tuned with reality well. Your reflexes (when they hit your leg with a hammer and it goes up on its own=reflexes) will be really sensitive. You will sweat and grind your teeth and you might tense up more. If you start feeling these symptoms all at once, its an emergency. Without treatment you can die from this. Treatment is supportive..meaning they treat the symptoms. They might give you meds for your anxiety, and possibly give you something called an serotonin antagonist (does the opposite of keeping the serotonin floating in your brain..its good for this situation) along with other supportive treatments to make sure you make it out of this. Hope this helped :) -Jackie the phlebtomist, biochemistry student and fellow user of antidepressants.

fanshy hu onchi Tramadol is a weak (at 992 nM in rat analysis) SRI. Sertraline (Zoloft) is much more potent as an SRI, but even adding both of these and other (S)SRI drugs wouldn't make for Serotonin Syndrome or hypertension. Your scenario is equivalent to simply adding another SRI med to Zoloft, i.e., the two work by the same mechanism - by blocking the 5HT membrane transporter. Just don't ever combine an (S)SRI with an MAOI. This is the combo that equals major trouble.

I got sort of anxious and slightly shaky/restless but I didn't do anything different with my meds which I've been on for years. So I think my body was just confused. I hadn't eaten all day either, I wasn't vomiting. I took a klonopin and everything was ok. :) Great informational video. Incredibly succinct and forward!

+Bethany Marty i went from 100 to 125 mg of zoloft. I been going up every 5 weeks by 25 mg, however these last couple days going to 125mg from 100mg I feel agitated,restless,insomnia,anxious,can't really focus and feel kinda weird. However I don't have the dangerous symptoms like high blood pressure and all that. I feel even though I been on the 125mg for few days I will have to go back down to 100mg sucks because I was looking forward to getting up to 150mg but these things take a lot of patience.

Maybe because she overdosed on cocaine, and she could be aggressive?
@8_Raeder

So consuming cocaine is a reason for being tied for you? I hope that you don't work in any institution where you can do so. also you COULD be aggressive (for what reason ever), so you should be held in prison and shackled ;-) Everyone is potentially aggressive

well, she could be aggressive, she could be having paranoia, she could be having seizures. Now imagine a hospital having 15 people per room like that, do you think its a good idea for them to walk around? Do you thing they would casually be talking about the weather? :P

and in a pub where everybody is drunk or on reefer, they all shoud be tied?? I cite you "she COULD be aggressive, she COULD be having paranoia, she COULD be having seizures." and you should be banned from working in a hospital, you could commit several acts of deprivation of liberty.

Had this fairly seriously a few years ago when I was on Lithium, then drank cough medicine to get high, and then took Benadryl to get high. I think I had anti-cholinergic toxidrome from the Benadryl and some serotonin syndrome from two or all three. I was terrified like say being a kid and being terrified to open your door and see what those sounds are...goddamn it's a nightmare. The tachycardia especially was torture and horrifying. I had to call 911. Not fun, not fun at all. Believe me, put that shit back on the shelf. Stay the hell away from Dextromorphan, Diphenhydramine, and Doxylamine Succinate. I'm still abusing Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) but have been making progress in treatment. It's not habit forming like say sleeping with a stuffed animal or a light on isn't habit forming. m Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely the habit can and probably will form. Oh and alcohol is dangerous as hell on it because they increase the effects of eachother and one of those effects they both have is to depress your respiratory system, as in making it harder to breath enough. I used to get a lot of panic attacks when I was using that were kind of sheer torture. And I'd never once had a panic attack, so I didn't even know that's what it was until it happened several times. Way to ruin a night believe me. Heaven help us for recklessly selling some of these drugs without enough information. God please have mercy on us. I definitely fear the root of all evil put these drugs on the shelf for sale with a mild warning label, but then a goddamn bullshit reassurance that it's not habit forming and is safe. And they don't make these drugs as a charity, no they make brand names and collect salaries. Take that half-truth to their grave, it's always really been a whole lie, and I've come close to dieing by finally seeing that. I'm a friggin ghost right now, well close to one or more anyway.

***** I'm seriously scared and your other comment scared me too. You sound unhinged atleast. I'm completely shocked you're comparing forming an addiction and abusing an OTC drug to rape. What is really the matter? Taking Diphenhydramine off the store shelves is not an individual liberty issue. For instance, it's not in the bill of rights for God's sake. Individual liberties do not protect manufacturers irresponsibly selling drugs on store shelfs with unbelievable side effects and no mention of that and then having the nerve to declare it non-habit forming. This drug is not base on rationality , I can assure you of that. It's like prescribing heroin or cocaine for a tooth ache which is something we used to do until it was finally deemed dangerous and irresponsible and people were tired of it hurting others/themselves. It's like giving a baby a sip of bourbon. You don't know me you know? You completely invalidate yourself by declaring me unemployed and other irrelevant things even if it were true (it's not). By the way, you are in fact the offended party because you were originally offended by me over your presumption that I'm attacking liberty.

So many Dr's believe, not think, but believe they are all of superior intellect and that a patient is incapable of being as intelligent as them. They treat patients like cattle they are just moving through the shoot to get us out of their hair. Most Dr's would probably say they loved their job if it wasn't for those patients!!!! So happy we both made it through this horrible experience, God Bless!

ReviewCam. Hi and thanks. My screen name stems from the most effective antidepressant I ever took. I floundered for several years while taking SSRI and SNRI antidepressants, only to then find that this older class of antidepressants, the MAOIs, increased serotonin levels to a greater degree than SSRIs did, and so I took the chance and asked for a prescription for an MAOI (in my case, Tranylcypromine). It got me out of bed, and gradually to conversing with my family and friends, working and exercising and in general, feeling like life was worthwhile. It has done me no end of good. The incompetence of this video is, as far as I can tell, in no measure due to the producers of it, but rather to the texts (even professional) that informed it. Other videos created on this channel whose content I'm conversant with seem impeccable.
