I'm really enjoying this terarrium and I like how the update turned out as well! I personally don't care for the updates, but I'm curious about what you think. Should I continue doing the updates?

Those isopods got the life, a nice little home, no rent, free from predators and the landlord renovates every year or so.

I’ve actually got a completely sealed native terrarium that’s been going 3 years strong with absolutely no maintenance whatsoever. The crazy thing is it actually sits outside, exposed to the elements. It only started with an inch of soil, but the decomposing matter has actually created a 2-inch layer of soil. Maybe ill show it in a video!

My 7th grade science teacher had a terrarium that has been growing for 20 YEARS. It had tons of plants and was super big and dirty on the inside, but everything was growing just fine on the inside. It was insane. Edit - About 20 years according to him. Even if it wasn’t, it was still obviously super old.

Hi Tanner, first of all, thank you so much for all the educative videos you have made so far, my girlfriend and I have learn a lot. We have done around 10 closed terrariums about 3 weeks ago, and we are currently noticing that mold is building mainly on dry wood pieces. We are ventilating them regularly and we have replaced contaminated wood pieces but the mold is still coming back. For the composition of our terrariums, we have followed your instructions, and from that point we tried different kinds of false bottoms with mesh, always with activated charcoal. The substrate is made of coco fivers, sheet moss, potting mix. Finally, we have different kinds of plants and local mosses. Some are only mossariums, composed of false bottoms and activated charcoal only. We have also boiled decorative wood pieces and rocks for sterilisation and using spring water only. We didn't find springtails for now but there is life in the terrariums coming from the local mosses (which look like springtails). We are assuming that the origin of the problem would be either: - over watering, - the potting mix that we added to the substrate (we have seen afterwards your video where you advised against using this), - or the local mosses might have brought some spores of mold...? What would be the problem according to you? Would you have some advice? Again, thank you a lot for the videos and the tremendous time you're spending on these, there are really inspiring. R+V

Its actually not unusual for plants like fern to appear like this as many seeds are stored in the earth as diaspores (not sure about the translation here) waiting for their time to shine. We talked about this in class the other day

I’ve been looking for a project to do with my son. He’s very interested in science and nature and this is just the thing I think!

Because of you and your video's i'm starting my terrarium. Found some moss, grass, and plants from the parents back yard in Sedona AZ.

I made my first Native Terrarium 5 months ago and gave it to my sister-in law with 4 different kinds of mosses in it and it's doing great. This spring I'll be making a few more for myself and friends because when they saw the one I gave to my sister-in law they loved it. =)

How they get Oxygen and CO2 in a closed Jar? How they survive? Are plant get CO2 from the insect and insect get O2 from the plant???

I'm about to try my first terrerium, and have collected a stick that has very cool fungus on it, and is partially rotted thru. Can it be put in a terrerium, or will it do bad things? I have two kinds of moss that I have been trying to keep alive, nice stones, and this 6" twig, plus spider plant babies and pothos. If I can get one thing made and keep it alive for a bit, I think I'll have the gumption to try something else. I have hydroton that was previously used, and I'm going to get the mesh for a false bottom today. Substrate will take some thinking on. Thank you for your videos!

I love terrariums. but i go to great lengths to keep the isopods and millipedes out of the mix. i had a 1000 millipede population explosion and learned my lesson. in such a small space with no predators they quickly run out of resources, maybe like what will happen to humans if the population continues to increase.

You should get a table at a flee market and sell these with some small maintenance or care instructions, just to clean the glass. That's easily something people would spend $60 on - esp with the "almost no care needed" attached to it. The only real expense would be the jars. Great job.

I made one of these, but my plants grew too much during the last 2 years, and they recently busted out of the seal, forcing the container open. I think I need to start over in spring. I had no idea moss could grow 8 inches tall!

You inspire me to make terrariums, I made a mini terrarium with 2 plastic cups one on top of the other

May I just say that earthworms DO cause damage to forested areas. I was told they change the properties of the soil which is beneficial in a vegetable garden, but not Boreal forest. A big problem is fishermen dumping their bait worms in the forest thinking they're not doing any harm, but apparently they are. So by removing the worms, you saved your terrarium.

Watching this on my 70 inch tv it's just awesome I'm just trying 2 get educated before I put hand and stuff like this ..I really wanna do some terrarium but I dont want 2 fail..👍👍👍👍👍

The comment about the redworms doing most of the damage confused me. I thought redworms only ate decomposing plant matter so I don't understand how they were killing anything other than maybe making it too hot and moist in an enclosed terrarium for the plants to survive. I know my vermiculture bins get really hot and moist with all the red worms in it and the bin has to have holes poked everywhere in the sides. If i put fresh apples from my yard into the bins they won't touch them until they start to rot and any seeds that get in there from produce grow until i pull them out and the worms never seem to bother them either. I really love the vids and i'm not correcting him since he didn't say how the red worms did most of the damage i was just genuinely curious so i could be fully informed moving forward with building a terrarium in case anyone knows.

Very cool, so do you advise against the use of worms as micro fauna?

I would find it interesting to gather some flora and fauna locally, then go somewhere 100's of miles away and get some more and so on. Mix it all together and then study the results.
