Replacement of idler pulleys, tensioner pulley, and serpentine belt on any 1GR-FE TOYOTA FJ Cruiser/Tacoma/4Runner. My tensioner bracket was in great condition still so I didn't see a need for replacement. Parts used were:
GATES ACK070834 (belt and pulley kit)
GATES K070834 (belt)
GATES 36174 (idler no.1)
GATES 36173 (idler no. 2, needs 2 pulleys)
GATES 38411(idler tension pulley with bracket)

Awesome video! Part # references are a huge plus 👍 the pictures of the belt layout and torque specs are also a huge plus 👍 It’s those little things that make these DIY videos like this such a huge help for us all.

Toyota recommend to replace the entire belt tensioner assembly when replacing the belts and pulleys. Usually around 100k miles. Rock Auto sells all these parts as a kit or separately.

How did you get the tensioner pulley it self off clockwise or counter clockwise on the bolt and what is the torque on it. Thanks. Well i just answered my own question the tensioner pulley bolt uses left hand threads so you loosened it clockwise so you so you tighten it counterclockwise. For anyone that doesn't know one can remove the pulleys and go to a bearing supply house and they will mach that bearing exactly just make sure to get a sealed bearing. It will be way cheaper than the auto parts store price and good quality bearings. Only thing its from a bearing house you'll get just the bearing which means you'll have to press or tap bearing out and the one on.

I just stumbled across your video bud. What brackets are you using for your seats? And what steering wheel hub are you using?
@jamespqnguyen

Thanks for watching! The name of the manufacturer is Planted Technology brackets. Steering wheel hub is NRG SRK-125H and shares the same mount as Scion FR-s and Subaru BRZ.

Go ahead and order the pulleys too if your budget allows. They're extremely cheap and if I had known how easy it was to do, I wouldn't have lagged, but at least I got this video together.

DownTownFotos How do do you removed the tensioner idler pulley ? Is it reverse counter-clockwise and what’s the part #. Thanks good video
@jamespqnguyen
@jamespqnguyen 5 жыл бұрын
@@todosube Correct. It's clock wise to remove. Righty loosey. At 4:50, I remove the tension idler. Unfortunately, I ordered the kit and it comes with a bracket. That's gates part #38411. I'm sure you can order the tensioner pulley alone. Give rockauto.com a search.

you removed the tension pulley from the new bracket and only replaced the pulley right? not the whole bracket?
@jamespqnguyen
@jamespqnguyen 5 жыл бұрын
@@matchupkings2871 Exactly. If you want to go the extra distance, you can remove the battery and alternator to access the tensioner pulley bracket. I figured I'd do it when my alt goes out.

Any particular reason why you added a washer to the 36173 on top of the insert? Is that standard practice and is it still running good? Awesome content btw!

How did it go? I'm getting a horrid screechling/squealing noise out of my 4Runner 4.0 after it rains. Is yours holding up well? Mines an 03 and was wondering if I would need to replace the entire tensioner
@jamespqnguyen
@jamespqnguyen 5 жыл бұрын
Mine worked out great. No odd noises. Smooth operation. If you haven't replaced before, then give it a go. The stock bearings are a wear and tear item. Squealing sounds like the belt. When is the last time you replaced the belt or tensioner? Sometimes the belt or tensioner has outlived a service life. Separate from the pulleys, there's additional work of removing the alternator so the tensioner bracket can come out. Good luck and let me know what you find.

@@jamespqnguyen how did those pulleys hold up? It's been awhile since your original post. I'm curious because they are recommending the whole tensioner bracket with the pulley be removed and replaced a five and a half hour job at the shop. They're telling me that you cannot just replace the pulleys on the tensioner. But your video says otherwise. Lemme know how they held up.

There was a scraping noise from start up.. sometimes dust or mud gets in between the washer or bearing even if the bearing isn't bad. To have it all apart, it's easier to change at one time.

@madxmaxxine6552

Mostly quiet. On hot days it still groans. I ended up doing a power steering cooler also. Pretty sure it's just the rack groaning and making noises now but nothing broke that I can see.

@madxmaxxine6552
@madxmaxxine6552 2 жыл бұрын
This is on a 2007 single VVTI. Your 2013 will be a dual VVTI and pretty sure the pulley sizes changed. Head over to rock auto and reference your parts. I would do them all because it's only a little more time rather than having to have it apart but of course your time and money are important

@@madxmaxxine6552 Thanks, I've replaced all pulleys during the belt change. They were all in rough shape. Good idea to change them 7-10 years, depending on use. I have not changed the tensioner. Also done full fluid flush and **breathers for rear diff.

Is it common for an alternator to whine after install? It's a "new" reman with lifetime warranty. I installed the alt yesterday on my 4runner (same engine as FJ), and now im retracing why a new alt would be whining. Had no noises with old alt, pulleys or serp. belt. Only thing I changed is alt BC it no longer charged.

A guy on the forum posted an another option for the pulley without bracket. "Febest 0187-GRJ200 pulley appears to be a direct replacement for the tensioner pulley. The bearing is the same size as OEM - 17 X 40 X 17.5, and the outside dimensions of the pulley match OEM. "

Any chance you saved the tensioner pulley bearing to see if it had a part number to reference or measure it? I would like to buy just the bearing and press it in. Is it the same as either idler pulley 1 or 2 by chance? Thanks
@FishyAbody
@FishyAbody 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe too late to help you out, but for benefit of others ... bearing size is 17X40X17.5 (ID X OD X Width); I replaced mine with a Nachi bearing, 5203-2NS (2NSL also works). Or, Febest offers a Chinese made pulley/bearing, 0187-GRJ200; quality is not too bad; I got one as a spare. I have a thread in Tacome World on replacing all the bearings in the OEM pulleys.
