What a terrific Q&A. So many useful cue giver tips.

The emotional maturity to be able to do tasks in high distraction enviroments and taking the time to reach that space with grace and success. Handler emotional balance is a huge part. Handler emotional stability conbining with dogs being responsible for tasks can be difficult. If this inexperienced handler is having a tough day giving calm and rewarding, possibly cheerful and light cues can be very hard. Eps senses emotional states better than humans and facades of good cheer are not nearly as effective. Some days improving skills with cues may feel like what we should be doing. Having gentle days that are more bonding and less about reaching a perceived as necessary milestones are much more effective. Owner training with emotional vulnerability holds its' challenges. I am so grateful to have a smart young dog who can usually let me know when she is sensing I am not doing great and pushing for more is not a sensible option. She has a look that she gives me... I read it as "really, surely not today when you are a bit wobbly with emotions". Slow is fast. You explained the dynamics so well DoggyU. I am grateful.

I certainly agree with you about some breeds being more effective as AD candidates. I was seeking a dog to take on and followed family recommendations. I would not trade Eps for the world but... Taking on a 7month old rodent chasing breed was not the best option. She is young, enthusiastic, energetic, sensative and a real handful. It is hard work for her to change her genetic drives and hard work for this new handler too. If I ever try to owner train another AD I would not pick a Tenterfield Terrier. I often feel it isn't fair on Eps to have to bend herself into the shape of a calm and responsible dog when racing around like a lunatic brings her such joy. 💞🐾 Thanks again for such a useful and informative clip.

I use a non pull, harness and gentle lead to correct pulling and distraction training. I am trying to train Freja off lead for the AKC canine good citizen. Freya in our neighborhood and at our park by the house since I cannot take her out much due to financial reasons and I do not drive.

To be honest, I would do all my livestreams at like 9am ET if I could - that's when my brain is best LOL. When I have to wait till the afternoon I'm always less sharp, but it means more people can attend. I stopped doing them at night because it was just not my best work and then I'd think about it all day LOL!

Laura, I am sorry that I missed the live today! I do still have some questions about how I can properly socialize Freja more. I had this situation with her friend 8 month old Black Lab named Pepper, and I just wanted some advice about that. I am still here in Washington owner training Freja. Freja is 17 months, and I cannot get her into her classes due to still not being able to fund the training. I do socialize Freja when she is off duty.

Hey Nicole! Unfortunately, I'm not taking training clients at this time so I wouldn't be able to provide specific feedback about your dog's socialization. I would consider looking into Atlas Assistance Dogs if you're looking for more customized feedback.

@@DoggyU Do you have any advice or support for those types of situations. I did contact Atlas and the trainer is not.taking any new clients since her dog passed. I will go ahead and talk to my trainers at petco. I still do not have the funds to get Freja back into training.

I trained my dog to settle under the table anytime I at the table which trained for restaurants at same time. so if it is a table in the situation that she fits under she has an auto under. And what a retriever rant. I had decided to get a show retriever then I found a larger newfiedoodle breed. seemed 95% of Goldens were mini. Not a good mobility dog.

I am in the process of turning my 3 month old retriever mix puppy as my service dog and we are from Oregon. I have one question that my mom and I kind of were arguing about. My question is do you license a puppy as a service dog while there in training or do you do that after they're done with their training to be legally licensed as a service dog? I'm just asking because I don't know how a service dog license works exactly especially when a puppy is in training.

Hi Shannon - there is no licensing body in the united states for service dogs. If you're new to service dogs, I highly recommend you check out my Service Dog 101 course which will go over all the relevant laws for service dogs, as well as teach you about service dog etiquette, training timelines, how to choose tasks for your service dogs, and more! What is your attitude towards service dogs in training coming from service dog lines? I got Freja through a small breeder. She is really good!

If i'm purchasing a dog, ideally I want it to come from service dog lines, or sometimes lines that have turned out nice therapy dogs. It really depends on the lines and the breed.

@@DoggyU the fact that Freja comes from service dog lines ,and my breeder has had a lot of her puppies go into service dogs work makes the selection a lot easier. Freja is very healthy.

Another thing! I just want to say that I really appreciate your positive attitude towards owner trained oh and service dogs. It is not easy to train your own service dog when you have triggers . I really love the way you explain the teaching. I do not think a lot of people give owner trained service dogs a chance because of the fake service dogs that are being presented. I wish we have more resources and, accessibility for people who need service dogs,and do not have the funds to obtain one. I feel like I got lucky with Freja. I really love watching your videos as a support for my owner training. It is not easy for me to train a service dog with my Asperger’s syndrome. I feel like I do not have the support since I do not drive, it is hard for me to take for it out all the time. I would love to take Freja out more and get her trained a little bit. The clicker training really helps on the walks. Sometimes I have to take a break because my hearing is so sensitive,and Freja wants to chew the clicker. Freja is the best thing that has ever happened to me,and I want to do my very hardest to get set up for success.
