My mom has a good trick for giving her pup pills. She will cut a little slit into a piece of meat and stick the pill in, or wrap the pill in deli meat and then have a second piece to follow it, so our dog Sheila will snap up the pill meat quickly in order to be able to eat the second piece of pill free meat! I've also seen treats at the store that are meant to stick pills into but idk how well that works

Depends on the dog, we use pill pocket treats and my dogs love them. Some dogs are smarter though and will bite the pocket open and spit the pill out. Mine like treats enough that they just scarf it down without a second thought.

You can also give marshmallows give the one with the treat first, preferably teach them to catch them and give them one without medication right after so they don't think it is so icky. Dogs biting through stuff is why it is SUPER helpful to teach your dogs to catch food you throw to them. When they catch it they tend to swallow it right after rather than try to dissect the stuff masking the medication.

Jacquie that's pretty crappie to find out your neighbor smokes. I am in a similar situation. I purchased a couple air cleaners from Costco and they have really helped. I also purchased a special filter for the furnace so when the air conditioning is on, the filter cleans the air. I noticed a difference almost right away. You can also buy some relatively inexpensive insulators for electrical sockets and light switches which will block the smoke from seeping in through them. You only need them on the side where the smoker is. All the best sweet girl. 🌹🌸

katherine sheetz some dogs are too smart for the hiding in food method unfortunately. My dog licks/chews all the food off and spits out the pill or if I hide it in her bowl she eats around it and leaves the pill. The only method that works for me is putting it on the back of her tongue and holding her mouth shut then putting peanut butter on her nose so she licks it and the pill goes down.
@nicoleboyer7488

You should use Kraft singles cheese and wrap the pill in it. It's a lot easier to make them eat because they just swallow it whole.

One of my dogs has IBD and has these symptoms all the time :( having IBD myself it's so heartbreaking to see her going through the same things I go through but luckily she has it pretty mildly. We have her on a special diet and medications (though luckily no biologics or prednisone like I have to take). She's so lazy but so supportive. She'll stay in the bathroom with me for hours by my feet when I have a flare.

I had my boy out one time and we had been standing in a REALLY long line of people for two hours. While in the line, he threw up. I figured it was nerves (he was still in training). When we got into the venue, he suddenly had serious diarrhea . I had to sit down and clean it up, people getting upset with me because my boy was sick. One woman even said something horrible to me about it and I said "Well I guess you never had one of your kids puke in public. Lucky you." She left me alone after that.

Hi. Here is what I do when my dog has to take medicine. I mix a big table spoon of coconut oil and a big tablespoon of peanut nut butter together. Place some of the mixture in a small "cupcake cup" or small dixiecup. Then drop in pill. ( make as many of these ahead as you want. ) place the peanut butter cup/medicine cup on a plate and freeze it. My dog loves to eat these so-called treats if she is sick! No messy peanut butter and no more pill not taken. Problem solved. 🐶

This might be a little late, but I have cerebral palsy, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, costochondritis and a heat intolerance just to name a few and I wanted to share a story. A friend who had been taking a seizure medicine for epilepsy since she was a child wore away her stomach lining as a side effect plus she'd also get massive migraines and throw up from it. Often, I was with her just to help her through it and she was in so much pain from.it. I understand how some prescriptions are dosed, however nausea can be so dangerous for dehydration and many other reasons. No doctor should tell you to get used to nausea, please find another one. They are there to help treat ailments sure, but there's also such a thing as bedside manner. As a side note, throwing up for my friend was also terrible for her because of muscle tone issues so I sympathize fully. Different path to the same result. After she threw up I'd give her a tablespoon of water every hour. It kept her hydrated but didn't trigger vomiting which she appreciated. Granted, she fought me a few times, but I helped her lay on her left side legs out so she wasn't scrunching up her stomach, administered her migraine medication, and she'd sleep after that.

Hi Jaquie, Sorry if this question is too much to ask. But were you ever embarrassed about your chronic illnesses? If so, how were you able to overcome that? I've recently been diagnosed with a chronic illness and am finding it difficult/embarrassing to tell people about it. But I need to be able to tell friends/loved ones and my college in case I need their help. Part of the issue is I look "normal" and I don't want them to think I'm being overdramatic and faking it. Thank you :)

Morgan Ashleigh I also have an invisible illnesses. I just remember, I am not my illness, and if anyone isn't understanding about it, then they probably aren't worth being a part of your life. My aunt told me to 'put my big girl panties on and deal with it', and my cousin said I was just a 'welfare whore'. Needless to say, they are no longer apart of my life because their lack of empathy. There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. You didn't ask for this illness. Be brave and carry on!

Morgan Ashleigh I don't have any chronic illnesses, but when I've told people about my anxiety problems, they've usually been very receptive and understanding, and that would be even easier for someone to fake than a physical issue. The majority of people probably won't question you, especially if you show the authority figures diagnosis papers and generally just explain to people what's going on, even if it's just a short summary. You can't help what might be going on with your body, and you getting the support you need to carry through your day is far more important than the opinions of a few people that may or may not believe you :) please stay strong and take care of yourself.

My illnesses do not embarrass me, but public ignorance can be frustrating. That is why I share my story, to spread accurate awareness. Just know that your feelings are validated! Especially if this is new to you, it will take time to adjust. The way I see it, my illnesses are a part of who I am, so people in my life need to accept all of me. At the same time, my illnesses are only a small part of my life. I focus on the other aspects of "me" as well. (: Stay strong!

Hi Jaquie, This video actually reminded me of something I've been meaning to ask you. I have many of the same disorders you have and I am also owner training my service dog, Poe. One of my shared disorders is POTS. Most of working with Poe I have found to be quite easy, but one difficulty for me is picking up his poop because of my POTS. No one ever talks about the poop, lol. I was wondering if there is anything special you do or use to help you with this or if you have any other tips and trips for POTSies caring for their service dogs.

I don't know if this will work for dogs, but it works wonders with my cats when I need to give them pills. I just take the pill and roll it around in my hand with some of their treats (or dry kibble) and get the pill all smelly like the food. Then I just lay it down on the floor and the cats eat it all up pill included. No hassle, no having to shove it down their throats. Works like magic every time lol. I also feed my cats a raw diet but I keep a bit of kibble or greenies on hand just for pill purposes. Anyway I hope Harlow feels better soon!

There's nothing worse than living next someone in a row house that smokes. At our old place, the neighbors fabric softener & clothes soap used to make me VERY sick! His dryer vented right next to our front windows & door. It was awful! Are you layering a hospital mask under your Vog Mask? I haven't seen you mention that before. Vog masks do not, according to the company, filter out airborne bugs. It filters large particles like smoke, etc., but given the fact you are immune compromised and wear your mask for that reason, it's not protecting you unless you wear an additional mask. Or do you not worry about that? I hope Harlow is feeling much better today!! That medicine works quickly, thankfully!!

Try wrapping it in gorgonzola. I had a dog who was really good at finding pills, but gorgonzola has such a strong flavor and odor that help to mask it, also its super difficult to lick off. One bite of pill free before the the one with the pill I found helps also. I don't know how the smell would impact you personally, but I have have had great luck with that method. :) (I've had lots of old or chronically sick dogs, gorgonzola has never failed me- except with one dog. But he legit just got tired of certain foods, pill or no pill)

Ugh, a smoking neighbor!!! My Dh smokes, outside only, but it isn't a huge trigger for me except that he smokes right before bed and UGH. The only times tobacco smoke really affects me is if my UC and RA flare is so bad that I can't eat and it makes me feel sicker, if I have bronchitis or Pneumonia, in which case it makes me cough and dry heave which aggravates all of my joints badly when it already hurts to breathe, (aside from my bad knee, my rib joints are the first to swell and the last to retreat) OR, and this was before I got sick, when I was pregnant. One whiff of tobacco smoke and instantly I would vomit so violently that my arms would hurt(and bc pregnant, I'd also pee a little...or a lot). My son would have been 20 this past May 15th, (he was full term, and had HLHS, that was undetected and undiagnosed until he died at 4 days old) and that Christmas I was pregnant with him, we spent as usual with my grandparents and the rest of that side of the family, out at the farm. Now, lots of family members smoked. My (favorite, no denying it) grandma was the worst though, and she had been diagnosed with aggressive, small cell lung cancer about the same time Rhys was conceived. She was still chain smoking though. So, she was blessing out other smoking family members about not smoking in the house because it made me so sick, with a lit cigarette in her hand. I had to laugh, bc it was so typical and normal of her. Anyway, all that aside, I really hope your smoking neighbor does NOT cause you any aggravation of your conditions!!!

Jaquie just a suggestion but when you need to give harlow medicine try wrapping it in cheese from a cheese blocks that how my mom dose it for our dogs and it works for them at least, if you give harlow cheese that is.
