Service & Restoration of the Antique Medalle D'argent 1860's Clock with a Mercury Pendulum Part III

This is the Part III of the video, showing the service and restoration of the antique mantel clock Medalle D'argent, made in France by Vincenti Co. The stamp on the clock indicates that the company won a silver medal ("medaille d'argent") at the 1855 Universal Exposition in Paris, which means the clock was made after 1855. The Vincenti Co. went out of business in 1870. The clock uses a patented Brocot suspension with a click spring, which started to be used since 1850. Based on above, the clock at work on my desk was built between 1865 and 1870. Another specific part of this clock is the mercury pendulum, invented by English clock master George Graham in 1721. Using a mercury allows compensate the physical changes of the pendulum rods due to the natural temperature fluctuations.

Прекрасный видеоматериал! Большая помощь для начинающих. Единственное замечание... Черпак с оси третьего колёса нужно снимать для удобства в работе.

Very nice video, I was trying to find some help here for my clock. I bought few months ago the exact same clock, just the face is Tiffany, but is the same Medaille D'Argent. I bought it from a guy in NJ and he shipped to me with the pendulum on, so when it came to me was broken. I took it to a repair shop here in North Carolina and the return it to me with a chip door, so I have to find someone to make the glass for me and I'n not sure they knew what they were doing, they put a plastic suspension spring, and I asked them to replace it, so finally I decided I'm going to fix it my self, I was trying to set the pendulum up or down to set the correct time and that spring broke so I bought a new one form England, it took another month or so but I fixed it, the problem is that the clock is 20 minutes a day fast. I'm not sure the suspension spring they put was the right one, I install the same they had install before , it was a "French Clock Suspension Brass Steel Pendulum Spring 22.0 x 4.0mm ". So my question, if I may, can you tell me which is exactly the suspension spring you use in this exact clock you work in the video. I thank you so much and thank you again for this video.

Thank you for the comment! The clock I worked on for this video was given me for service and I do not have it since I finished the job. Unfortunately, I cannot help in telling the exact type or size of the suspension spring. And I did not replace the spring, I just used the one that came with the clock. Look at 3:35 of the video and maybe you can see the approximate size of the spring. Did you try to adjust the pendulum length? Maybe it's too short and clock runs fast. Good luck!

I have one very similar to the one you're working on. I found mine thrown in a tote with a bunch of junk from an auction. everything seems to be intact, even the mercury pendulum and it has the key. Someone has for sure overwound it. Would this cost a lot to repair? Thanks!

Congrats, you've got a nice antique clock! The cost would depend on the level of work you want this clock to be cared for. The range could be within $200-500. But you should ask your local shop for estimate. Good luck!
