John Paul at Rimmer Bros takes us through the process of servicing a Range Rover P38 V8 petrol.
*Notes: 4.87 Litres is a service fill. If the engine has been apart then the initial fill would be 6.6 Litres.

I'm guessing that this engine is fitted with the later oil pump driven from the crankshaft? Recommended oil change procedure with the old gear type pump, was to refill the sump before removing the old filter. Otherwise, it's possible to find that the pump refuses to prime. If that should happen, the pump cavities need to be packed with petroleum jelly which is a nuisance, to say the least. Does anyone at Rimmer's recall the Unipart GFE158 filter being replaced by the GFE175? They looked identical, but the GFE175 allowed oil to drain down causing a delay in oil pressure build-up on cold starting. I ended up buying old stocks of GFE158s to solve the issue.

Good video, very useful. I have the same model. I think my "Transfer Chain" needs replacing, Is this a DIY job ( I am a competent Mechanic ) or are special tools needed? Cheers.

The catalogues are free if you just want a single one. You can go to rimmerbros.com/ and highlighted in red on the right is "free catalogues". You can either order one or download any of them as PDF files. We ship parts world wide. Hope that helps :)

Can u not use fully synthetic oil? Would this offer better protection? How often should the items you've done, be replaced?

Did you ever get an answer to this, as I too wonder if fully synth is not better?

I so love my Range Rover (1996 P38 RHD, 4.6 HSE, duel fuel). I need a new battery, but the bonnet release has failed on the driver’s side. Managed to open approx 1/2 “ and get WD40 in the area but still can’t release the leaver. Can you help??? StuartH.

Oil is a very controversial topic but you have to bear in mind that the Rover v8 is essentially a 60s engine designed to run on conventional oil so it won't benefit from using modern synthetics you run it on 20w-50 conventional they usually run a little more quiet on it but 10w-40 semi synthetic and per handbook will do just fine
