The reason it's louder is because in the piano roll the default velocity is at 80% while in the playlist it's 100. So it's not the volume knob that's different, i's the velocity value.

Yeah I feel like he kinda realized he was spewing bs when he opened the sound in the playlist and you clearly see that it's at 75%, lol 💜

Yes agreed. By default in samplers the velocity is mapped to volume. You can also drag audio clips into the piano roll to see the waveform. Alt+N I think hides the waveform

@mayfourteen But even if you turn up the velocity form piano roll to 100% it is still a bit quieter than dragging it into the playlist.

Maybe it's a genre thing? I've noticed hip-hop producers tend to use the channel rack but genres like EDM tend to put it straight on the playlist. I've tried both and the channel rack definitely helps with getting ideas out and flows quicker, but putting drums on the playlist makes it a lot easier to mix things up with the drum pattern & timing 🤔

I do the same. It makes it easy for reversing drums, laying down foley and drum layers. I still like the piano roll for hi hats and percussion I want swing on. Usually end up bouncing that to audio for the playlist though lol

nobody can do like a dilla bounce in the step sequencer. if your not doing trap stuff with a 2 step hi hat it gives you more control over the drum bounce

the reason its louder in the playlist vs the piano roll isn't actually the volume knob like you said (funny, you said "this one is 70%," then said "this one is 100%" but it was the same knob that was still at 70 lmao) the real reason is the VELOCITY. if you put your velocity to 100% it will match the volume you get in the playlist

I raise you this: When you drop the sample directly in the playlist you get significantly less options to edit the sample, in the channel rack (for whatever reason) you get more options. The volume makes sense but usually for snares and kicks you make pretty repetitive patterns, so endless copying and pasting them in your playlist can clutter up your project file. Using the waveform of a sample to lay down essential drums is smart, but: did you know you can drag and drop the sample in your piano-roll? It'll be quiet but you can see the waveform!

if the "reason" is because it's "louder", that's really not a good reason, or at least not a valid one, especially to present it to beginners who may come across it and imagine things. it's the same thing as adjusting the velocity in the piano roll, it's just a question of volume. there are good reasons, and several good reasons for using the playlist nonetheless

Hey I feel like you don‘t need a lot of time to find good drum samples in your library. You just listen to a few and find one that fits quite quickly. I have quite a lot of experience as a producer but I always keep hanging on findig samples that fit and I‘m so fucking tired of it… I feel lile it‘s a tedious process and kills my creativity. Do you have any advice on how to find fitting sounds more quickly? How do you organize your library? Any help appreciated.

Kinda complicated, takes away from what you can do with the midi signals within piano roll. Personally if I feel like setting it up, FPC lets you layer and route everything from within, less clutter and just one piano roll and channel to deal with.

Its better doing this in ableton bc you can highlight your patterns and the empty space and it will duplicate on grid?unlike fl. Plus reversing and editing audio clips is so much better bc you dnt have to make everything unique. I love fl but i hate how unorganized your session can become after rendering clips making so many clips unique n things like that are very irritating, and have to select stretch modes. omg im starting to get mad thinking about it but basically you are forced into using the channel rack.
