It's more the pheromones... there's precedence for it. They were supposedly used in some perfumes and colognes through use of odd means... I think certain animal musks extracted from glands normally found near the anus...

the tall Court Lady that's interested in Maomao is the one I am most curious about. Gaoshun and Maomao have such a funny relationship and her looking at him when Jinshi's main servant referred to her as "Xiaomao" was soo funny as he only refers to her as that.

If it ain't totally obvious yet, our mans Jinshi is "fully functional." He's either the Emp's little brother (officially) or (probably) his son by Ah-Duo. And being a direct blood relative of Emps, he's not a eunich.

@@pearchris She herself is basically oblivious to the world, even at her age. She was oblivious to Jinshi's jealousy after she came back from her homecoming, as an example. Jinshi is developing feelings towards Maomao, but she doesn't see the objective. However, the romance in this series is VERY slow burn, so they may end up together somewhere down the road.

@@HannahS65 It doesn't matter if Jinshi is developing feelings, we're not talking about how he feels, we're talking about how Maomao feels, and as it stands right now, she'd reject the idea outright as ridiculous. Maomao's romantic interest in Jinshi at this point in the story is absolute zero.

@@pearchris its still ambiguous at the LN, at least as far as I got. She does self-reflect a lot because she is aware herself that its not that she can't feel love, but more so she's got a lot of experiences that made her feel it less.

12:18 Sandalwood has an antibacterial property. I still use a sandalwood-scented soap to this day, maybe you could try looking it up at your local market? Anyways, I believe sandalwood is a part of medicinal herbs. Maomao smells medicine out of that tall lady. Not to mention, the abundance of medicinal herbs Maomao found in her place. It's safe to say that medicinal plants won't just appear in the civilization area unless someome grows them out (like Luomen did in the inner palace). Besides, that tall lady chased Maomao out, saying that this area is off-limit. We could assume that she works in that area. And what area is that supposed to be? Maomao noticed a military building nearby. TLDR; That tall lady is most probably a court lady who works in the military ground, and she has some expertise in medicinal herbs.

6:45 A court lady from what I looked up is also known as a The lady-in-waiting in China. Referred to as palace women, palace ladies or court ladies, they were all formally, if not always in practice, a part of the Emperor's harem, regardless of their task, and could be promoted by him to the rank of official concubine, consort, or even empress. MaoMao would essentially, after passing the exam, have official status in the palace.

That's different. A court lady is a position that never existed in the Chinese imperial system but did in the Japanese imperial court. Unlike the concubines and ladies-in-waiting who only exist to serve the emperor's pleasure, court ladies in the real-life Japanese imperial court were female OFFICIALS. They existed for a while during the lower points of imperial rule when imperial power was waning and the court couldn't get enough men to fill regular minor official posts. Instead, noblewomen who would normally have served as ladies-in-waiting were given minor official positions and ran the daily administrative functions of the court. While this was an ad-hoc arrangement in Japan, in the anime the position is made official.

this is definitely something i learned from chinese dramas. all women in the palace are there for the emperor's choosing, which is why i'm relieved maomao hasn't caught the emperor's special attention so far..

Many missed the implication when she tell herself that the other lady smells of sandalwood and some bitter smell. My wife right away knew what it meant. Sandalwood is a predominantly male fragrance and bitterness is of sweat and $ex. She was also coming from the military area were al the men are…. I’m sure she knows that particular smells from her “sisters” working in the pleasure house.
