👍for using VS code. I remember I tried different "magic" things to make the vs code work(from the stackoverflow and etc). Until I opened that darn omnisharp console and read the errors, updated mono, installed missing things to fix all the errors and TADA, it started to work! You dont have to open the project from Unity btw - its one of the "magic things". Mine works when Unity is running the project and I open the vs code by clicking the icon.

Thanks, for some reason I always had issues setting up VSCode (no matter if Windows or macOS) - now everything works just fine. I like VSCode better because it is more lightweight and less taxing on memory than the bigger Visual Studio.

super awesome Sam! just FYI Unity has deprecated Visual Studio Code package, but i installed all the .NET and Mono stuff and installed the new Unity for VS Code extension which installs the MS C# dev kit. i tried a whole bunch of stuff without restarting but restarting is what did the trick. nice to finally have it going!

Your tutorial was very useful, but I keep stumbling across an issue. I get the error "The .NET Core SDK cannot be located: A valid dotnet installation could not be found. .NET Core debugging will not be enabled. Make sure the .NET Core SDK is installed and is on the path.", and I can't seem to resolve the problem. I tried searching up a solution to this issue and followed a lot of them (reinstalling while VS code is closed, restarting my computer etc.) but none of them have worked for me. Is there a way to fix this issue? It would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sam, thank you very much for the guide, very professional. I have one problem that doesn't work, the Omnisharp: Mono Path is empty. I try also downloaded version 1.25.1, I updated the files with the external tools and the line there is still empty. Other than that everything went smoothly. Would love your help. Thanks

Thank you for this video! I was inspired to give Unity a go by GMTK's tutorial video, but haven't been able to get Visual Studio for Mac to install via the Unity Hub. I'll try this workaround over the holiday. I'm super new to coding and noticed that you suggest a bunch of different extensions to go with Visual Studio- what do these do/add and would these kinds of things normally be auto enabled if downloading through the Hub was working for me?

In my case, warning massage saying "csproj file is in unsupported format. It need be converted to new SDK style to work in C# Dev Kit." It feels like I almost got through, but not successful yet. I think need to start from the bottom thoroughly again with this video🤓

There is also an extension called "vscode-solution-explorer" which is useful if you work with multiple assemblies in Unity. And "git graph" if work on many branches - with that you can see how is your git structure.

Actually highly recommend using GitKraken for displaying branches in a visual format - it's excellent. Not a VSCode extension, but I couldn't live without it tbh

Thank you for the tutorial. However, I followed all steps, but I got this error inside VS code when I open my script "No installed .NET SDK was found on the computer. If it is installed, make sure it can be found through the PATH environment variable. C# Dev Kit does not work without a supported version of SDK. After installing the SDK, you need restart the VS Code session, or the computer." "C# Dev Kit (Extension)". I think the error is C# Dev Kit Extension don't recognize SDK, I downloaded .Net 7.0. Moreover, I tried to reinstall Extensions and restart VS code and my Computer, but it doesn't work. Do you know how to fix this error?

I was able to fix the issue. I uninstalled c# dev kit and added "export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/share/dotnet" this to my .zshrc file. Then i restarted my computer. Hope this helps.

Very nice video! I was able to replicate this on Linux (Mint 20.3). The only difference is that mono path is /bin/mono

This seems to be a decent free solution though I kept going back between Visual Sutdio Code and Visual Studio whenever one randomly stopped working after an update. I use "Editor Console Pro" which is a Unity Package and integrates into Unity and does everything I need it to do. I got this in a bundle a while ago, and it ended up being one of the two best things in the bundle.

The only issue I had that wasn't addressed is I had to extend the "Shell Environment Resolution Timeout" in vscode settings from 10 seconds to 30 seconds because my shell takes forever to load for some reason.

I don't know what happened. I Didn't follow this installation path. Downloading Mono and the .Net. I had the Visual Studio from Unity installed. But I wanted to use CODE that is lighter and more customizable on Mac. I Installed the Code, Uninstalled the Visual Studio, Got those packs from the extensions tab and it was working... I guess the Visual Studio From Unity already prepared my MacOS with the Mono and .Net packages...

For some reason even though I set everything up, installed mono, set the path and rebooted. Visual studio code still tells me to install mono every time I open it.

Like many other people got the error "OmniSharp requires a complete install of Mono (including MSBuild)" Nothing helps! Even tried different versions of C# extensions, and checked that I have Mono stable installed, SDK, but NO! Still the same error "OmniSharp requires a complete install of Mono (including MSBuild) to provide language services when `omnisharp.useModernNet` is disabled in Settings. Please install the latest Mono and restart." I need any advices pleeeease! P.S. Just found a solution, maybe it can help others "it's a known Omnisharp (C# extension 1.25.1) issue. I think you'll either have to wait for a patch release or downgrade your Omnisharp back to version 1.25.0"

Even after fixing all omnisharp errors listed in the console, still debugger didnt work(didnt see unity app to attach to). So i pressed cmd+shift+p and there selected attach debugger and it worked thar way.. So now i can use breakpoints as well.

I’m huge lover of VS Code. I was using VS Code for several months with Unity because I use it for almost everything for years and I really love it for JavaScript or C++ projects but I can’t used to it when it comes to work with Unity and just use Rider… maybe something changed but I have bad memories with debugger and intellisense in vs code with Unity 😢 Maybe I should give it a try again 🤔

@@samyam Tested and it's still not perfect, IntelliSense isn't as intelligent as should be, e.g. doesn't tell me when I don't need some usings in my script. Most IDEs tell this by default and you can easily remove unused "using"s. Same thing when I have missing usings, it should tell my what should I add or add it automatically, e.g. "using System;" 😔

@blazeDev when you type something and missing using for that - you can click on that line, the lamp in the beginning appears, click on it and there would be a menu from which you can select to add using. Same approach can be used for many things, for a new function for example. You just type the name in place where it used and if the editor understands the types of parameters, you can generate function from the menu. You can select the code and click to generate function from the lamp menu and the code will be replaced with a call and moved to generated function.

I've followed the instructions, and it...works? But I'm afraid Omnisense just keeps asking for a link to a version of Mono, even though it has the link. Three installs, working with Intellisense, etc. but still asking for a link...I'm going back to VS. I'm trying to learn to code better, not learn to install things. No disrespect to you! You do you gorgeously and are immensely helpful! I just want an environment that's bulletproof so I know I'm not to blame for the stuff that goes wrong when it goes wrong. I'm too much of a noob to tell.

Right click on the "C#" extension, click "Install Another Version" then select the "v1.25.1". Once it's installed, reload VS Code and wait for "OmniSharp for OSX (Mono / x64)" to be completely downloaded in the OUTPUT tab in the terminal. Then close VS Code, and in Unity, go to Settings/Preferences > External Tools > click on "Regenerate project files". Then Assets > click on "Open C# project" and it should worked.

@@sammas533 That's what gets me! If it takes an experienced scripter hours just to make things....mostly work, what hope do the rest of us have? I've got a pretty high level of experience with 3D software, and there was a period with Maya when it just wouldn't work with the standard Apple video drivers, and it was almost impossible to teach Maya under those circumstances because it would break quietly, subtly, and then all at once, and you needed to know what was proper behavior and what was anomalous to tell when you needed to reboot. Anyway, thanks so much for taking the time. Your tutorials are delightful and very helpful and don't treat us like idiots, for which I'm eternally grateful.
