In Egyptian religion and as the ancient Egyptian god of chaos, war and disorder, Seth was the deity ruling over the dangerous lands outside Egypt as opposed to the fertile Black Land of Kemet. The Egyptian god Seth was thought to represent the dry and desert lands of distant places, contrary to his brother Osiris. At all periods, Seth was associated with the dangerous aspects of the desert, becoming the deity personifying everything that the ancient Egyptians feared from the desert regions. According to the ancient Egyptians, the god Seth is one of the first five gods born from the union of Geb and Nut right after the creation of the world, he then went by few other names among which Set, Seth and Sutekh usually translated as instigator of confusion and destroyer. Ancient texts assigned various spouses to Seth, but his most popular triad of consorts included his sister Nephthys and two warlike western Semitic goddesses known as Anat and Astarte.
Among thee Egyptian gods and goddesses, Seth himself is usually depicted in human form with the head of a strange animal with erect ears plus a long curving snout. He is also represented wholly as a red beast with a forked tail in which case he bears no real resemblance to any living creature, this led many to identify the sinister animal as a purely mythological creature imagined to represent the god Seth.
Based on the Egyptian mythology, Seth grew jealous of his brother’s power, resented his success and decided to remove him for good, his resentment grew even more after his wife Nephthys disguised herself as Isis to seduce the great king and became pregnant with the mortuary god Anubis. Seth was the natural opponent of Horus the Elder, and occasionally appeared as the great rival of Horus the younger over the crown of Egypt. Alternatively, this conflict could be stated in terms of a dynastic feud and a struggle for justice between the usurper Seth, and the posthumous son of Osiris.

Hello everybody, today we explore the story of The Egyptian god Seth

the reason Set is associated with the color red, is because in mythology, Geb, the earth god, gave Set the part of Egypt that's covered in red sand. The land was given to him as a gift, and to ease tension between him and Horus. He became heavily associated with the red sands of Egypt.

It would be really cool to see a movie where Set takes over and the sand turns red to show his territory. Especially if it's paired with the sky being swallowed up by storm clouds and powerful winds scorching the plants.

The most important aspect of Seth historically is as the God of Strangers and Foreigners. He was blamed for all of this merely because rulers turn to accuse immigrants when things go south for the loss of order, and people listen to them as they see their past harmony disappear with their arrival, which always happened even in times of wealth. The truth is that what works often doesn't work forever as it also changes the situation on the ground and eventually order that does not go with the times perishes regardless of how heavenly it was in the beginning because times change and order needs to take a chance with them or perish at its appointed time. Seth represents both the willingness to submit, as shown in his relationship with Ra, which represents the immigrant starting from scraps and doing the humble and dangerous works needed to build an empire as well as the rebellious nature of the stranger who, when denied basic needs, turns to usurping the established power out of sheer survival and his violence is the violence of the man starving on the street and stealing from the vendor who won't give him the scraps to motivate him to buy, and the stranger will go so far as to knock him in the head when the wealthy man attempts to oppress him with the law and bring him in to be assessed by a law that shouldn't be applied in the circumstances but would be if apprehended. In this case Osiris had grown lax to the point of not even recognizing he was attracting the wife of his brother and then even slept with her, this represents the established power thinking all that comes its way is its by right which triggers upheavals among the people, starting from the outskirts of the empire where wealth was historically scarcer and there was no room for appropriation. There are currents who think the cult of Seth, seen as a positive deity, may have influenced deeply the Abrahamic religions during their time in Egypt, since Egyptians would have ascribed them as under his patronage being self-identified in Exodus as strangers in the land of Egypt. This coupled with the fact that Egyptians considered the taking up of names as infusing power and Hebrews consider themselves as sons of Seth and not Cain, the two second generation patriarchs after the death of Abel. Seth was a Just ruler but his chaotic nature ensured justice but not prosperity which is why eventually the new generation needed to take the throne and build a new prosperity, putting a justice that is filled with strife postponed for when absolutely necessary because everyone suffering according to their bad deeds but with no good to be had becomes an empty justice ultimately unwelcome to remain the driving force once the dust settles and the people, tired of fighting, compromise justice in favor of order and good. Horus ultimately proved himself just enough to inherit the position and unified the lands, despite not being as Just as Seth he was more benevolent and that after years of strife was a good compromise in the eye of the people "I may not get the share I am owed as Seth will grant me but I will get a bigger portion with Horus" was the driving force which allowed Horus to prevail and gain kingship over Egypt. That's my interpretation of the myths in an historically inspired context.

This is such an excellent write up and I feel like it contains much wisdom. The ancient egyptians had a much more realistic and layered view of reality than we do. Seth was demonized as as everything foreign and therefore bad but good doesn't always stay good and bad isn't always bad if you look at it with nuance. Sometimes problems don't come from outside but from within ourselves it's just that our ego is so big we can't see it and sometimes what will actually help us is something that we are reluctant to do because it is weird and foreign to us. It's all about relativity.
@federicopettinicchio
@federicopettinicchio Жыл бұрын
@@sonofapollon447 Talking about weird there is the overlap between the desert, where the chances to encounter and therefore hurt others are diminished, and the stories of exodus where in the crossing of the desert a tougher hand can be used to straighten or test a people ridden with misconceptions; or possible misconceptions as we see in the place where Jesus goes, the desert, to be tested by the devil or, in a child-friendly manner, the place Goku and the other heroes of dragonball would designate for their fights. The desert in this case represents not necessarily a desert but a deserted place where you can fight without holding back (as is characteristic of the dogged fighting of Seth), or invite troubles without risking to cause casualties. It is also interesting the duration of the war, which lasted 80 years which, in historical terms, represent approximately a generation for what concerns the major carry-over of generational wisdom, as we see history attempting to repeat itself within similar timeframes, if we look at numerous metrics. This part as you can probably tell is less well thought out and mainly connects to why Seth was relegated to maintaining only the desert as his dominion but there is a lot more filling of Abrahamic tradition which wasn't the focus of the video, but I thought you might find some insights here too since you felt there was wisdom in my previous comment, which was more coherently pertinent😊. Also, thank you for your kind words!

I think he became vilified due to political reasons, upper and lower Egypt had problems with unification and rulership. But he was still respected and feared, he seems to be physically strongest among gods and most brave, facing Apep all by himself in early myths.

This went hard bro Seth is a Very interesting guy! I'm certain that he was demonized because of humans inclination to place blame on that which they don't understand or that which forces them to work hard to survive & be strong. There's a common theme among ancient history where God's all pertain to cosmic balance/harmony & coexist in spectacular instances of life complimentary to each other in a bid to create amazing strains of reality. I much prefer this to there can only be good or evil idealism in later religions. Its much more interesting when life views each of its aspects as blends of positive & negative energy that are all divine this in turn actually creates less wickedness & less delusion of grandeur which both lead to horrible contortions of the soul that stem from the ideas there is the path of evil or the path of good.

Set is not evil. He was the Protector of not only Egypt from Invaders but he also was the Protector of the sun god Ra. Set was very loyal to Ra and constantly protected him from Apophis. Ra actually wanted Set to be the next king but ISIS poisoned Ra and forced him to make her husband Osiris king, so that she could be queen. The reason why he is demonized so much is because of the followers of Osiris and Horus.

Seth,[a] in the Abrahamic religions, was the third son of Adam and Eve. According to the Hebrew Bible, he had two brothers: Cain and Abel. According to Genesis 4:25, Seth was born after Abel's murder by Cain, and Eve believed that God had appointed him as a replacement for Abel. He is the only other child of Adam and Eve named in the Bible. jupiter(osiris, horus)was opponent of God, not Seth, Seth was righteous descendant of Adam and Eve, cain on the other hand was pagan follower of osiris, jupiter, zeus, horus etc. stop deceiving people.
