This was a thorough explanation of chiming clock works. I haven't messed with total teardown of Westclock pocket watch or spring-wound clock since US History Class in 1955. Challenge was to get it back together and running in the 50-minute period. This Christmas, I fell heir to a Ridgeway Grandfather style ca. 1967 ?? which was but quit working a year ago before it was moved.. I am tempted to try cleaning it. John

Great video! My experience in reassembling time and strike movements with a count wheel is that when you are putting the plates back together you have to be very careful on the strike side that the pin on the warning wheel is close to the lock point and that the maintenance lever bottoms out in one of the gullies of the maintenance cam. With this clock it looks to me from your video that you don't have those issues with the ST 124 at the stage where you are putting the plates together - you just have to get all the pivots in the right holes, and all of the adjustments come later after the plates are back together. Is that right?

Ha! I mark my wheels the same way. I'm working on one while watching this, but my movement goes in a squashed tombstone looking case. I like to lacquer the plates and wheels on the clocks I work on except French clocks and English bell strike movements.

I spent the weekend in frustration trying to repair a 124 movement. I hadn't worked on one in over a year and couldn't get the 1/4 chime to work properly. I was about to give up when I remembered that another customer left one for me to repair also. I pulled that movement to study, and realized that the chime lifting lever going from the star cam on the minute hand shaft, was fussed onto the arbor where it pivots. Even a good soak in the ultrasonic was not enough to free it and it was acting as if the lifting lever and the arbor were one piece. Steven Conover dedicated a whole chapter in his book "Chime Clock Repair" to repairing the 124 movement, but he didn't mention this possible issue. Someone long ago must have oiled that spot and it gummed up solid over the ages.

How do I release the clock spring tension? 8 day chimes work,but the clock was over wound. has three key winds thanks
@DaltonClockRepair
@DaltonClockRepair 5 жыл бұрын
You would use something called a bench key. You release the click and very CAREFULLY let the power down by gripping the bench key and letting it turn . It's the tool I used to wind the movement at 32.33

I won a bid on a Seth Thomas Brookfield banjo clock. When I recd it, besides needing a good cleaning, I found that I was unable to wind the spring for the chime. The key just turns and turns and turns. Is that a symptom of it being broken or is it something else? The clock goes into warning on the hour and half hour and sounds like it is trying to chime on the hour and half hour. The spring is unwound inside. Any suggestions or advice?

Mark, I noticed about 5 minutes into the video when you are putting all of the arbors into the holes in the back plate that you also put in two lever arbors on the chime side. It looks to me like you put the chime lifting lever (labelled (18) in Conover's diagrams) on loosely so that it will turn freely on the arbor. Is that right - is the chime lifting lever supposed to turn freely on its arbor, or is it supposed to be staked firmly onto the arbor? Thanks for any help - I'm putting together a ST 124 myself, or trying to.
@DaltonClockRepair

Enjoyed watching! Videoing suggestion? There were occations when really hard to hear your comments & instruction. Are you using one of those mics that public speakers use? It's a little boom mic that comes around by the cheak & close to the lips so one is on-mic; no matter which direction they turn their head. Secondly, sometimes hard to see what you are doing through your hands or fingers. Can the camera be mounted either slightly above your head or a little to the right (right handed?)? If your eyes can see what you are doing, then so can we. That's why we are wanting to watch, listen & learn from your experience. (How do those food - demo shows place their several cameras?) I respectfully appreciate your labors! Very time consuming I'm sure.

Mark. Great video. Everything demonstrated perfectly. I want to know how you got that clock so clean and shiny. What solution you used in your ultra sonic cleaner. I’ve used several different solutions with not as good of results as yours. Currently using 1:1 mixture of water and ammonia thanks
@DaltonDroneZone
@DaltonDroneZone 10 ай бұрын
I've been using an off the shelf ammoniated water based solution (Astro Clean) which shines the best but will eat the lacquer of more modern movements so it needs to be used with care. I recently switched to a non - ammoniated water based solution - less stinky but it doesn't shine up the parts as well.

This was an interesting episode especially when you build it up from the base. It reminded me of the episode of Star Trek when Spock needed the clock tools. What are the little screws on the back of the hammers for? You made this look very easy but when I see all those pieces, it's very intimidating - the wheels all look the same. I'm looking for a certain Japanese wall clock - Takano. It had vertical grooves going down the front and bead work and a tan face. I can't find another one like the one I bid on ebay and lost.
@DaltonClockRepair
@DaltonClockRepair 8 ай бұрын
Hah! I'm a trekikie also. That episode your referencing is called "The city on the Edge of Forever" and won awards but I digress. The screws are for securing the hammers. Thanks for the interesting comment.

Some 113 Thomas have double clicks. How do you know which models have the double click feature? What was the criteria on them? Using double clicks and sometimes not using them. It's because some put in wall clocks and others on mantle?
@DaltonClockRepair
@DaltonClockRepair 6 ай бұрын
Those movements have much stronger springs hence the double clicks and the gear reduction winding system. I've worked on quite a few and releasing both clicks at once can be a pain.

How to remove the bends in the wheels?
@DaltonClockRepair
@DaltonClockRepair 3 жыл бұрын
That can be tricky. You can use a clockmakers lathe and carefully bend back with smooth jawed pliers while spinning it manually to try to true it up. If the bend isn't too severe you might just want to leave it alone if it doesn't effect operation.
