Hey Seth, an added tip for cutting zip ties: Use another zip tie. You push the 2nd tie onto the tail of the first, snug them up, and proceed to do that twist trick. The 1st tie usually shears off perfectly flush with its nub, then you just pull the 1st ties tail out of the 2nd ties nub and you're good to go!

Hey Seth, i was out biking pretty far from home without a quicklink and my chain broke, so i found a string on the ground and tied the two ends of the chain together on the bottom side of the drivetrain. Then i was able to pedal one full revolution, backpedal, and repeat. Its a pretty sketchy fix but it beat walking home

I’ve got to say, having subscribed to you a while back when I was still into mountain biking, and now being a hardcore bmxer with no desire to take up mountain biking again, I still enjoy your videos immensely!

Good tips. Nice video. I had a chain break years ago and ended up walking home. Since then, along with chain tool, I keep a strip of chain links in the tool bag. Exact chain length is not important unless you have a single-gear bike. If you don't have a truing stand, put a cable tie on your fork and cut it where it just touches the rim. As wheel turns observe the gap and tighten spokes accordingly. After decades of working on my own bikes, just learned this from a youtube video this year.

As a pro mechanic I've used the valve-nut tip when doing fork overhauls for years. Glad to see it being spread to other riders! Once I remove the fork I like to use a pedal strap threaded through the headtube to secure the headset bearings, spacers and stem. This helps keep everything in the proper order, makes assembly easier, and most importantly it keeps the handlebar from dangling so that you're not putting stress on your brake hoses.

That go pro hack blew my mind. Hats off to you for that one.

If the bolt is not too rounded, you could also use a rubber band between the bolt and the hex. It should help to have enough grip to unscrew the bold. I've used this trick to get rid of a rounded top cap bold and it worked well.

Seth: you can wrap your chain around sprocket to prevent injury. Me: has nasty scar running down my whole leg from slicing it open on a sprocket 🤦🏼‍♂️

Tip for the valve core removal - Tyre levers, specifically the metal ones, the hook end that clips onto the spoke is the same size you need to unscrew the core... you're welcome ;)

I have a couple for you, you're not the only one who thinks ahead, for chain stay protector I used road bike handlebar wrap, I used cork for weather resistant and lightweight, another thing I thought about was my cable and hose routing, I ran everything thing to compensate for a 180 degree turn, but I also ran my cables a little shorter than my brake lines, so if it does happen the cables will grab before the hydraulic lines do, call it a failsafe, I would rather replace a cable as apposed to the alternative, AKA fluid everywhere, I hope you get this and share, I love your channel along with many others, you have been a great place for knowledge and insertion, one more thing, the road bike handlebar wrap comes in so many colors and forms it's the perfect product for chain stay protection.

Just bought my first hardtail in about 10 years mostly thanks to your videos. Needless to say, I overexerted myself during the first ride and puked next to a park bench. You never realize how hard biking actually is until you sit on one and realize that stamina isn't just a video game stat anymore.

After "mangling" the hex wrench, you can save it by cutting or filing away the "mangled" section so the tool may be reused.....

I just recently snapped my chain in bentonville. It came back and skinned my shin, Invest in shin guards. Edit: I’m trying to lube my suspension fork. Any substitutes for fork lube? Since I don’t have any.

A buddy of mine recomended to apply silicon shine (on a clean, dry bike) to prevent dirt from sticking to easily. Never tried it, but im sure I will someday

Seth I've been a diesel technician for 25yrs. I've cut countless zip tie ends. I've never thought about just twisting them off. This afternoon I replace everyone on everything in my garage.

A hack I came up with today out of necessity in conjunction with another hack (technique?) I already knew of. I bought a $20 complete front wheel and rotor to replace the one stolen off my bike. The disk was very wobbly, and rubbed on the brake pad on one side. I loosened the caliper, squeezed the brake lever, and tightened them again (the known hack), but the disk still rubbed for a good bit of the rotation. I took a crescent wrench and adjusted it to just a bit wider than the disk, and was able to true the disk by just spinning the wheel on the upside-down bike, using the tire logo position to reference where exactly in the rotation it made the sound. No truing stand or weird brake-disk-bending specialty tool needed!

You can also use your fork as a trying stand by putting a ziptie on the stansion or wherever is up against the rim (or rotor) and use it like a trying stand ☺️

I was hoping you would address the "through axel" I would never do that, so I was asking for a friend.

Try 'vacuum sealing' zip lock bags by sucking on a straw through a small hole at the top before you close the bag. This keeps everything in place and prevents stuff from rattling around and smushing together during a ride

One thing I've added to my "on the go" tool kit, is one of those tiny KEY knives. It's a fold out knife the size and shape of a key, even fits on a keychain, and if you sharpen this well when you buy a new one it's a very capable mini knife. I've had to use one several times since I've started carrying it, and have given them to a few of my biking friends. It cuts patches to size, cuts zip ties, cuts tape, we had to cut a piece of plastic one time & it cut that well, many uses. ~JSV

Hey Seth! Love the channel and what you're doing for the community. I have a suggestion for the next bike hack video. "How to dial in a bigger than expected dropper post". For me, I have a 150mm that's about 1 inch to high for me and really sucks because it came with the bike and I had no option to change it. I've thought about doing a shoelace tied from my seat to my seatpost clamp, when I've dialed in the right height. Or better yet, a thin plastic wrapped metal wire, or normal wire with some nice small metal crimps. Haven't tried it yet. Maybe you could!

After working on my brake caliper I forgot to bend the pin that threads through the brake pads in order to secure the them, so it fell out. I used a piece a bamboo and two zip ties on each end to secure it. It worked so well I hated to remove it once back home. Great vid!

That rear axle demonstration makes me really glad that all of my bike wheels have regular hex bolts there instead of anything recessed. Sure, those can be stripped too, but it would take a LOT to pull that off unintentionally given how rarely I take my wheels off.

Hack for you sir! Remember Bike Lust? Expensive and expensive but a great alternative is furniture polish like Pledge. We used it in our shop for a dust free glowing finish on the bike. I've used it on my aluminum 2012 Stumpjumper it's entire life and the finish is still amazing. Don't spray the bike (disc brakes...), Just spray a rag and wipe on. Note! I have not tried on carbon so use with discretion there. Happy trails!

here’s a hack for you if you want to ride with minimum gear and need to carry an air canister, you can attach the canister to your bike by using one of those hand pump holders which mount underneath your bottle cage.

The other day I had to take off a cheap ass grip shift that was stuck for good. Some years ago I would've tried to save it. Now I don't have the patience. Hammer time.

One suggested hack, get a large t-handle torx fasten it by one half of the large plastic handle in a vice. Position so the round metal shaft is pointing outwards. Simply slide a wheel onto the torx shaft via the axle. Torx are usually round and smooth perfect for a dummy axle. Now have a simple jig for a rotating wheel. I use this method for a number of things such as positioning a wheel/tire for final stage of pouring sealant before sealing just the last few inches of tire. Then spin the tire around and inflate.

You can use seat clamps as Tire levers to work on tires in a pinch

For that thru-axle removing, you can cut a groove with hacksaw or angle grinder and use a large flathead screwdriver to unscrew it.

Good zip tie cutting hack when on the trail. For when i'm home, I bought flush cutters for zip ties.... never have a sharp zip tie end ever again and well worth the $5. I'll never use standard wire cutters again because they always leave a very sharp edge and i've cut myself by accident many times before.

On the bottom of a Rockshox fork you can pull out the rebound adjuster and use it as a small Allen wrench. This works on small bolts like the ones on grips. I was hoping you could put this in the next bike hacks video!

Hi! The valve core wrench tip is really good, but have you realized that the end of the chain tool on the F15 multitool can be used for it? :D

I didn’t take the time to read through all the comments to see if it was mentioned, but you can use a second zip tie to twist off the first zip tie if you don’t have a multitool. Slide the second zip tie up to the first so that the heads are touching. Then use the tail end to twist. Once you twist it off, pull the scrap end of the first zip tie through the second zip tie and you can still use it as normal.
