I decided to go for it and see how doing 4 subs works in my theater rather than the my current JTR/JL Audio set-up.

Who has time to watch TV anymore? We are way to busy watching Obsessed Garage. Great job on those speakers. I picked up a pair of towers real cheap as they had a rattle in them. The speakers looked new but I planned on replacing them until I removed the woofers and found kids toys in the darn thing.

I have probably run audyssey 100s of times on my own home theater and in reading numerous threads and running tests what I found is that you actually get a much more accurate reading from that system by making small movements of the mic from the center seating position instead of doing like they show you. So instead of moving the mic all over the place, find your center seating position and then move the mic from there about 12 inches each direction, my results for distance of speakers and levels and overall sound was much better.
@jimmy2shoes75
@jimmy2shoes75 5 жыл бұрын
I was just going to comment on this, its very hard to room correct all sitting positions, better to get sweet spot around the main listening area, audyssey will give you much better corrections, plus you want the mic facing the ceiling get a cheap mic stand, the first measurement is the most important one have this at ear level central to the Tv, some people are suggesting using a mini dsp, I would hold out for now the x32 audyssey for multiple subs is pretty good, a umik 1 is a good investment if you want to go down that rabbit hole.
@FURognar
@FURognar 4 жыл бұрын
this is true. keep the measurements within a few feet of each other. think of it as a 2 to 3 feet radius with the central listening position in the middle.

You will need some delay on your rear subwoofers, and you might need to reduce their level by almost 6dB compared to the fronts. This makes the case for having SPA1200DSP amplifiers on all four subs so you have the DSP tuning flexibility.

If I may humbly suggest brother Matt.. when you run the audio calibration software, it is better that you exit the room (close all doors and remove large items not permanently occupying space) to get a more accurate reading from the audio chirps that bounce around... Just a thought..

I think he should be in the room during calibration sitting where he would normally sit so that the calibration will take into account the reflections/diffractions his body will cause (the room must also be as silent as possible turn off hvac, refrigerator (anything that causes background noise). Also the subs count as a .2 not .4. You would need 4 discrete subwoofer outputs on the preamp to count .4. (splitters don't count). A trick for placing subwoofers is to put the subs where you sit (move the couch) then find the bass pockets in the room, mark them/take note then put your subs where the pockets were. Then the seating position will get all of the bass you want. Then center inside that cabinet.... Imaging issues abound I am sure. Also those DSP subs, use the calibration system on the subs first, then use the calibration on the marantz second. I have the 8801 with an Outlaw 7 channel amp and a dual 1KVA modified Adcom running 2 Subs and another 7 channel Adcom running my highs (7 channel bi-amp).

@@76S30 Love the sub crawl for placement. Might disagree though with the pocket theory . I'm usually only setting up 2 subs in customer's rooms, so that might be why I find better results placing the subs where the bass sounds the best, not the quietest ( or loudest )

It's very hard to make the subs in the back disappear, I know feeling the bass closer may want us to place the most powerful one in the rear but, I would put the most powerful in the front and tune the rears just for ambience and low volume or output. Or all subs in front near the screen. Home theaters are a nightmare to tune, room acoustics and many issues that it can never be perfect, and when you listen to just music, cds it's hard to pick the best mode on the receiver. After the tune is done, sometimes it may be better to make sure a good DVD concert or studio tracks sound good with most music coming from the front as if you were in front of a stage. The old over 15 year Steely Dan DTS DVD could be a way to know or learn if all the instruments realistically sound where you see them. Good luck and sometimes the best would be as good as it is going to get for home theaters in rooms not designed for theaters 👍🏻

Look into something like a minidsp SHD for just managing the subwoofers, the dirac suite can do just bass management. Also can do your PEQ through dirac too, I get around 16hz in-room before THD starts to rise after PEQ.

Love your setup. Lose the cabinet or get a smaller one, center channel on the wall, left and right speakers inside of subs. You should get into DSP. It's complex at first but once you learn it, it's SO powerfull and the results are like nothing you've ever heard. IIRC filters . I'd LOVE to calibrate a home system like yours. Just to see the look on your face when you hear the results. Even 100 seat Atmos cinema autoria don't have 4x18" subs. If you upgraded to Atmos, you could use the subs as surround subs. The way Atmos handles bass is pretty impressive too. It makes even mediochre sub systems slam in a very characteristic way. You KNOW you're hearing a professionally calibrated Atmos system. A good sound stage is entirely down to the accuracy of the time alignment between each component. An accurately time aligned system, between individual components (everything needs to be bi/tri-amped for active crossovers and phase correction) with good room compensation and node cancellation will not have a sweet spot, the speakers dissapear and you are immersed in a highly detailed sound field. If you really want to spend some money on a serious piece of kit that is (in my opinion), the best sounding processor money can buy, the "Altitude" range from Trinnov is the one. It's like experiencing surround sound for the first time again. Trinnov are rapidly taking over the cinema sound market from Dolby, because it puts Dolby's Atmos installations to shame at 1/2 the price. It's the only processor on the cinema market that has the ability to accurately time align any room and calibrates itself. I don't know how much the Altitude is, but I know the cinema version - "Ovation" is around $4000 and supposedly less than the domestic version. Way out of my price leage ! It's one of those things that once you've heard it, you HAVE TO HAVE ONE ! Or DIY something to achieve something similar.

I use a dayton audio umm6-1. I calibrate reference volume to 75db. I calibrate each sub to 75db via the gain knob on the subs them first with pink noise and reference volume. Then after each sub is at 75db on there own, i run them all together and adjust the level trim in the receivers itself to 75db cause each sub is gonna add 3db gain i think? So i trim that to play 75 db and it really helps a lot. Sounds so smooth. I have a similar room to yours and i also use REW to see what the room looks like on graph. Messed with some phase controls and that helped also. Its a process and im learning just like u but when it gets done it makes a difference. Every seat is a good seat. Lol. Have fun and take care.

I got my first kit parked on the garage floor ready for some glueing now ^^. Gonna test it and if it performs as expected I'm going for 4 more, stacked 2 and 2 in each front corner. Will use an external amp though. Tremendous amount of bang for the buck compared to premade solutions and easily as good sound. Congratz on finishing the subs.

Would be interesting to see a scientific shootout between this Partsexpress 18 kit and the JL Audio Fathom 113. I have lots of experience with the JL products. Very high quality Box construction,Driver construction, Very powerfull amplifiers. I think the JL would win in all tests but, at $2500 it should. I think the Partsexpress 18 inch kit would probably do quite well at about 1/3 the cost. Or I could be wrong, he he. That's the coolest part of the DIY side of this hobby right?

I ran a sub that close behind my couch once. Though its not "supposed" to it did seem to rebound sound back into wall then back up. Almost echoing the bass and made it sound boomy. I ended up turning volume on sub amp(dayton) down lower and on reciever. May also try playing with phase a little on rears. Just my opinion though. Nice setup.

Im just sitting here thinking what which approach i would take and i keep going back to time alignment between the front and back subwoofers. I would right off the bat try playing with distance or phase to see what difference it makes, then building from there. At least until your friend comes and helps with the tuning. That amount of cone surface area and wattage should blow you out of the water from every angle, so definitely cancellations are happening.

Nice room. When you have your system calibrated, I'd almost guarantee that a Minidsp 2x4 HD will be used. It'll allow the subs to all be in phase with one another, and time aligned so that they're hitting you at the same time. Once that happens, poof it's like a genie just gave you three wishes and you used one 😉😀

Get some of those off the floor, raise two of them up at least 8-12" . This will produce a beautiful clean sound by not firing a large percentage of the forward bass wave into floor. Audiophiles and professionals say putting the subwoofer on the floor is like putting it in mud.

hey matt! you share my love for home audio. I would definitely suggest running some simple Room EQ Wizard(free tool) sweeps and you'll know the best placement in 30 mins. It's really hard to truly tell without measuring with a tool. Wish I had the patience to build my own equipment. fire up a laptop and you'll get it dialed in easily. I wish the streaming apps didn't all compress the audio to hell...I have to stream my local files to get the true audio experience or the equipment is somewhat wasted.

Check out Multi Sub Optimizer. It was designed to integrate multiple subwoofers in one system. It's got a steep learning curve but the results can be amazing. I've got 2 of the same subs and a pro amp, MiniDSP 2x4HD and Audyssey XT32 and spent months between MSO, Room Equalizer Wizard and Audyssey. MSO is definitely going to get you the best result here, try it if you have the time. If not - run the front subs as one sub seen by the AVR, and the rear subs as the second sub as seen by the AVR and it'll probably time align them better. Without a microphone and REW you're just guessing, though. Good luck!

Don't forget about crossovers on the front speakers. If it sounds off still, try messing around with the front speaker crossovers/Audyssey and removing all the bass from them and see how it sounds afterwards. That should help get an idea of what's causing issues. If you have cancellations/odd sounding bass with the speakers at your normal crossover point, set it as high as it can go, then see how it sounds after, if it clears up a bit, then play with phase and check out other crossover points and then Audyssey the bass out of one, then the other to determine which one is the culprit. In my case my left speaker even though it's just a bookshelf speaker (Chane A1.4) it was interfering with the subwoofers bass around the 60-80hz area (Ultimax 18" in a Full Marty) and after setting 63hz and 125hz (all my Audyssey lets me do) to -20 on the left speaker, it has helped the bass quite a bit. It was an interesting work around, but for my room, it's what worked best. Anyway, hope you enjoy those subs and can get it tuned to your liking. Everything below here I'm just blabbing pointlessly and can be ignored lol Also I feel the sealed cabs they offer area bit too small. I'd personally rather have them in a 6cu and give it 1.5 to 2db gains in the 20hz and below area. or 1,000 watts to get 96.6db in the 6cu box vs 1.600 watts to get the same 96.6db at 10hz in the 4 cube box. (Free performance, except you have to cut the wood manually lol)

Nice video!!! When ever you have multiple subs, never run them on the different amps and crossovers. It's very difficult to get them to play together, you will most definitely deal with some bass cancellation. Whenever you are running multiple subs, it's best if you have an external multiple channel amp and an external multiple channel crossover. Have one signal going into a 4xchannel amp and you signal going to the crossover. You need them to play together pushing all at the same time like a car stereo system with multiple subs. The way your setup is, you'll have more bass from one sub than all four. Simply put, run everything through one multiple channel amp and one multiple channel crossover. 🙋🏿‍♂️🤸🏿‍♂️

Output wise, how do those 4 Daytons compare with the single JTR?
@ObsessedGarage
@ObsessedGarage Жыл бұрын
The JTR moves air like nothing I've ever experienced. It also sounds better than the Dayton. The main advantage the Dayton seal boxes had for me was that the giant JTR was too directional. You could really tell there was a massive sub in the right corner.

The 65 inch LG OLED is nice but your audio system demands a much larger display. While Samsung QLED doesn’t quite match up to LG OLED, a Samsung QN85Q900RBF display, which could be sold or traded later, would work well until LG’s OLED 88Z9PUA becomes available. Two old movies, Bullitt and Grand Prix, would be awesome on your system.

I did bass shakers vs rears. They are cheap and you already have the amps etc... Much more tactile and no echo from being in rear corners.

agreed. I think this guys priorities for a room that size are wrong. 4 grand on subs to get some even bass in a small room. I could do that room with a 4k projector, 9.2 system, amps, room treatment,etc.) for a bit more then that. After working with audio for 15 years I constantly find that it audio very subjective, even with "professionals" and after a certain point you hit diminishing returns. My JBL 590 Towers I got for $800 sound great and can handle even a large theater room. I understand the Audio obsession guys get because I've been there. its easy to want to justify to yourself why you spent thousands on a particular piece of audio gear, speakers, etc.) I come from the perspective of getting the most for your money and the audio business is all about trying to "convince" you why you should empty your wallet for their amazing tech "because you dont know what youre missing." Most of its B.S. because they know its subjective and when something is "expensive" its easy to convince someone its "better". Speaker placement, room treatment, some clean power, a DSP or EQ and youre 90% their.

Curious if you tried the SVS subs? Also.. I dont know why..but I am thinking an automated slide down projector with a 4K laser projector is needed.. maybe 140" screen.. though cant tell the distance between couch and screen so maybe thats too big for the room? Nice setup though!

I've been thinking about this a lot. Fit, finish, and tuning would generally be preferred by most of a polished pro SVS. I thought this would be a cool project to tackle to see if it is acceptable over something like an SVS.

@@ObsessedGarage yeah i would have to think the SVS is more refined. Not to mention the SB3000 motor and suspension with the new magnet structure is more advanced.

Level match your subs individually at the listening position with a dB meter. Can even use an app on your iPhone as a reference. Buy a miniDSP, a mic and download REW. Anything short of this and you will never get the performance it’s capable of. Short cut it by finding the ideal spots in your room to place the subs. The corners aren’t it. Look up sub crawl if you don’t have a mic and REW. phasing subs to your mains is critical as well.
