For about 10 years we've had a service here in Australia called Car Next Door, a car sharing platform allowing vehicle owners to rent out their cars and generate some side income. At the time of this video, they had just been bought and rebranded by Uber, becoming Uber Carshare.
After a good experience with Car Next Door just before rebranding, I decided I wanted to set up my own dedicated rental car available full time, to see how much money I can make. In this video, I give the car all the prep it needs to get on the road hopefully earning me money. It ended up needing a little more work than I had expected, but I think the mechanical refresh it had will definitely pay off in the long run.
Income Updates (NET PROFIT):
NOV 2022: -$65 (Car listed on 21st), 1 booking
DEC 2022: $125, 9 bookings
JAN 2023: $401, 9 bookings
FEB 2023: $128, 1 booking (month-long booking during this time which paid out in March)
MAR 2023: $809, 2 bookings
APR 2023: $543, 3 bookings
MAY 2023: $360, 2 bookings
Update: in June 2023 I decided to remove the car from the platform - it ultimately wasn't worth the time required

I'm renting out my 2022 gwm cannon hopefully it'll make more then your little car but of course my daily charge is probably higher and more popular being a 4wd ute.

So you can do better with a more appealing car. I specialise in one owner, low k older 'interesting/unusual" cars. My first car, a 2014 Renault Captur, top of the line with everything in great condition and constantly kept detailed (by me) has earned in six months to 30/06/23 67 bookings, driven 12,280 k's and from Uber $7,714. I am now developing a mini fleet of 5. Slowly as demand grows, because demand is still very thin and patchy. I think the secret is to have something a bit special, in the right location, with a lock box and keep it super clean and cared for. A couple of scratches or dings does not matter, as long as it looks great and is easy to drive. Maybe think about getting into a better sort of car? My measurement is, one I would love to drive for a day, but maybe not own forever. Old Mercs, Volvo, Renault, Citroen, Mini, exotic stuff that makes the driver feel a certain way, not just transport.

Hello..how about insurance.. Is the standard full comprehensive insurance sufficient to cover it?

@My.Piggies uber charges 40% fees to cover roadside assistance and insurance for yourself and the driver while on hire. And with the lock box and gps you know where they're and how fast they're driving. I might put a secondary tracker on mine just in case they decide to pull the plug on ubers tracker.

I'm being threatened with huge fines from my council in Queensland for using Uber Carshare so watch out...

I always park the car in public street areas (in front of parks, apartment buildings, train stations etc) so that it isn’t in front of private property. That’s where you can get council notices, if it’s directly outside a person’s place they can get the council involved. And obviously it needs to be in unlimited parking zones. Appreciate the heads up tho 👍

GoGet vans usually have one for the same reason, and some commercial vehicles as well, it’s all good. Doesn’t limit to a point where the car can’t get up a hill etc, just stops revs from going over about 5000
