Thanks for subscribing! Glad this videos are helpful. Speedgrader is located within each assignment in the gradebook. The easiest way to get to it is to go into the gradebook, click on three dots at thetop of the column for the assignment and click speedgrader for it to open. You can also go into the discusssion post and it's on the top right corner the three dots again to access speedgrader for that discussion post.

Awesome! Thank you! Try moving the discussions in order you want by clicking and dragging them . On the disucssions tab you'll see a rectangular set of dots that you can click on and use to drag them into the order you want. Or you can adjust the due dates and that might help keep them in the order you want. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your super helpful videos! I like the idea of adding discussions to my classes; I've never used them as a teacher before, though I have as a grad student. If I require that students reply to a certain number of others' posts, is there an easy way to check that they've done this?
@VirtualTeachingPro
@VirtualTeachingPro 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's all set up in speedgrader. Once you go to grade each student individually in speedgrader it pulls up all of their individual comments on the left side and you can read them and see how many times they commented on other students posts. Then grade it based on your requirements. I suggest doing a discussion and just having them post at least their first response and making the comments on other students posts optional. Then you can try it out first and see how it works and as long as they post their response then they get the points. It's a great way to start. Then add on from there. Online discussions are really the best way to get them to engage in my opinion as a community when teaching all online.

Your videos are terrific. If you set up a discussion board and grade it by complete/incomplete, will speed grader automatically show it is complete once the student posts or do you have to input that information in manually?
@VirtualTeachingPro
@VirtualTeachingPro 3 жыл бұрын
It should auto tally it as complete once they post their initial discussion post on the board. You will need to go into grades and mark those that did not complete it on time as incomplete though. Unless you have it set as auto to mark incomplete/zero inside your settings. Now, if you require them to reply to other posts it will not tally that you would need to go into speedgrader to check and see if they did it or not. hope this helps!

Question- I'm a high school teacher and have multiple sections of one class in my course. So when I make a discussion are all 4 of my sections in the same discussion thread? Would I need to create a discussion thread for every period? and if so would all other classes see all the different discussions in the modules?
@VirtualTeachingPro
@VirtualTeachingPro 3 жыл бұрын
If all of the sections are housed in one canvas course then yes they all see it. If each section has their own canvas shell course then they only that section of students. Think of it as each canvas course is one house and all the students in that course no matter how many sections are in it see everything. I hope this makes sense it's tough to explain in a comment.

Hi Ashlee-I teach math and am interested in using the discussion tool as a means by which students can ask for help with specific problems. Can the discussion tool be set up so that students can initiate a discussion post? We are using an external LMS called MyMathLab from Pearson education. I would like students to be able to use a screen capture tool to be able to capture the region of the screen that contains the problem that they are having difficulty with. I would like them to then be able to post that as a discussion item in Canvas. When they do this, I would like other students to be able to reply to that post and offer help. One question I have is "do students receive an email notifying them that another student has posted to a discussion item?" Any thoughts or recommendations you have regarding this functionality would be most appreciated. Best regards, Rob Knight
@VirtualTeachingPro
@VirtualTeachingPro 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob. I think this is a great idea. In Canvas you can set it up where students can initiate a post yes. I like to create a Q+A discussion board and let them post any questions they have so other students can offer support as well as the teacher. In Canvas they use reply with text, video or audio that's built into the RCE box. I'm not familiar with MyMathLab so my apologies for not knowing what tools are available in that LMS as compared to Canvas. Notifications depend upon how the student sets up on their end within their settings. They should be able to adjust how they get notified so they know someone has made a comment on their post. Hope this helps a little! Students these days are super tech savvy so I say go for it even if you're a little unsure how to navigate it yet. Explain it them and how you see it working and then ask them for feedback and how it is working on their end so you can make adjustments along the way.

Ashlee- I made a button for my morning journal discussion topics..so the kids click on it, it takes them directly to the journal to be able to respond. Question: can they only see one journal at a time? Can they go back to older journals and complete them if they need to? If so, where do they get the older journals?
@VirtualTeachingPro
@VirtualTeachingPro 3 жыл бұрын
It really depends upon how you have your assignments and canvas course set up. If you have assignments or discussions tab visible to them then they can go back and see it all. If you create this journal as a discussion then it would be under the discussions tab or it should also show up under the assignments tab or module if you have them created. It all depends upon how you have it set up and what tabs are visible to the students.

Pinned means it's going to be listed at the top of the discussion to so it will be the first one they see in the list. Hi there! You can go to each comment/reply and click on the three dots on the right of it and then delete or even edit it in my experience. I haven't yet discovered a way to approve or not approve comments but I also feel like that would be a ton of extra work on our end as educators. I would suggest providing guidelines to offer students the knowledge of what you want them to post. Maybe even insert a "best practices for discussion" section in the description or even a "please avoid" section as well. I've discovered giving them more info has been helpful especially with discussions.

Hey Ashlee.. I might ask a ridiculous question, but what app did you use to record this video? Thank you very much

Me again. Is it possible to use the discussion feature for student journaling--where each student's post would be private?

I use Assignments for student journals. Create an assignment and set it at online submssion, text box.

@@VirtualTeachingPro I'm concerned that middle schoolers could be inappropriate in their discussion comments. Aside from teaching them online etiquette, is it possible to delete discussion posts? In Padlet, for example, there is a feature that allows for monitoring before all students see a post.

totally understand where you are coming from here. yes, you can delete any post that a student makes within a discussion.

I have forgotten how to activate and deactivate options from the tabs for students (eyeball with the slash). I want modules to be visible. I do not want assignments to be visible.

go into your assignments tab and click the far right check mark on each assignmetn to make it hidden. it's publishing and unpublishing.

On the discussion screen there is a "subscribe" button. I know if I activate this button, I can be notified whenever a student post. But is there a way, I can be notified only once a day?
@VirtualTeachingPro

I'm pretty sure you can do this yes. Its under your settings and notifications in Canvas.

I have students who type just anything to be able to see other students' replies... then they edit or post a second post after they've seen everyone else's answers... is there a way to prevent this?
@VirtualTeachingPro

Yes, this is the tricky way they are getting around that these days. No way to get around this. There's always ways to trick the system. I honestly wouldn't worry about it. We are all doing the best we can these days.

Canvas discussions are what's wrong with Canvas. Your suggestion for graded discussions -- "Make a post, respond to at least x posts" -- leads to very shallow interactions. Students will do the initial post and required replies, but deeper conversations aren't encouraged. They're actually pretty hard to have, even if you want to -- you have to go find all your old replies on the original post and see if anyone has responded. If you have three classes and two or three open discussion posts at a time for each class, this is tedious-to-impossible. (Your discussion tab shows your replies, but not *replies to your replies*, so it's useless.)

We all teach differently and I have great respect for fellow educators in this world. I disagree with you on this one. Actually, my discussions with my students at the university level were exceptionally in depth, supportive and meaningful in sharing thoughts on the content in class. Deeper conversations are always encouraged in my courses and if there is a live component to the class we continue the conversations there like on Zoom. You always free to try. other discussion boards that might work better for you and how you teach. Many are available as extensions of Canvas or are third party apps that can be used. Hope you find what works for you best and thanks for watching the video.
