I am starting to set up my newly expanded HO Scale Model Railroad layout for realistic operations! I'll show how I operated the original shelf layout, discuss how that will need to evolve, and then talk about various tools one can use to direct traffic on the layout. From there, I start setting up car cards.

I enjoyed the Video. I Purchased the Micro-Mark years ago. I've tested out the Easy model Rairaod program and Excel and Acess. I decided to use the Micro-mark as I had already purchased. I'll probably use the software mentioned earlier for planning purposes.

Good Luck! In the time since this video was made I have had to move the layout, and am modifying it significantly. When I do get to operating again, I am thinking of using JMRI.

At our club (Carquinez Model Railroad Society, Crockett, CA), we only attach the boxes to the fascia for the monthly operations. We use wing screws to attach the boxes to the fascia that have jack nuts or T-nuts installed.

I can definitely see the merits in being able to take them down and clean up the look.

John Arthur - we have the public in the aisles during normal open houses and the boxes will get in the way, get broken, and collect trash.

You could use a french cleat on the boxes. You could put the cleats in several locations and then you could move the boxes around if needed. It would be more work than Velcro, but it would hold more weight and you could wood glue the box side and screw the side that attaches to your layout.

That's a good idea - I am currently moving the layout to a new location and will keep this thought in mind when I go to re-attaching the bill boxes.

Mine live on a shelf below the benchwork - I like a really clean fascia without all the typical operations clutter. They stand upright well enough on their own so this works.

I use the MM system too and agree with you about the quality and price. I attach my bill boxes to the fascia with flush head wood screws and furniture finish washers.

IMRROcom (Eric) did a great video on his channel on how he does the car cards and waybill system. I'm following his lead as I know that will work best as I build my layout. Grande Pacific does their a little different through JMRI which I also use but I like the cards and waybills better IMO. I did get bins from MicroMark (2x 3bays & 2x 5bays). Extra bays are good to hold spare waybills and what not, just make sure you label each bin as to each storage track they represent whether yard or industry. I wanted something simple not just for me to run but for my kiddo and guest who never ran operations before. Closest club that I know of is 3 to 4 hours away from the area I live in.

All good thoughts - I am not up for JMRI right now, but I will definitely be watching through Eric's content on this subject!

You can also attach the bill boxes to the layout with Velcro.

A google search will provide a pretty good list. I use a generalized version of what I found there. I don't really differentiate between box cars for example, they are generally just all "XM"

I have always be a little confused by the CC system. Most of my questions come from how cars are assigned to trains to achieve their waybill goals. I setup and have been using JMRI on my personal layout, but it to has is limitation. I unforntally do have anyone to operate with (one of the down sides to living in "flyover county") or have the ability to operate on others so I could become more familiar with car cards.

I see, and I am sure people do it different ways - my thought is to generate "demand" at the industry level like in real life - and then have the waybills to direct the movements to meet that demand, and finally fitting the movements onto trains I will run in sequence... Overall pattern of staging to the yard, yard to locals (and back), then yard to staging. I'll go into more detail on the next video, its a work in progress!

Hi John, nice explanation of how you use this system. Don't sell yourself short on making up your own forms though. You obviously have some computer skills and I'll bet it won't take you much time to make WORD work for your needs. And you can either get cardstock (110 lb. paper) at a local office supply place or take your digital files to a Kinko/Fed-Ex/local print shop and have them printed there. You may want to invest in a cheapo paper trimmer ($30) to cut things up or the print shop will be happy to help. I don't have a physical layout, but I've created a killer digital plan with my own names/locations. It's a lot more fun to run a train between two locations you know (or created) than use somebody else's locations. It's not hard, give it a go! Ghost of SP

Hi Thom, Thanks for watching and your comments. I did start going down the path of creating my own forms, but ultimately concluded the micro mark forms would be tough to beat (both in dollar cost and my time) as they were on sale at the time I was buying the bill boxes anyway. I was also avoiding unnecessary stops in stores with Covid out there and aging parents and in-laws I like to spend time with. I may eventually circle back to that as my writing is nearly illegible... =)

@@johnarthur6302 re the handwringwriting: my elementary school teachers told me I had the handwriting of a doctor. Unfortunately I didn't get the brains to go with the poor scribbles! The most important part is you're having fun, with people you love. Life just can't get any better than that! Good luck. Highball the rollby!

I use 3/4 pan head screws, they work very nice for the job. If you look you can see them in the videos' The are at each end of the box just a little above the pockets so the screw is close to center on the horizontal of the box.

Did you get everything figured out? I am trying to create my Waybills, but I am not sure how I should be doing it.
@johnarthur6302
@johnarthur6302 Жыл бұрын
I did - I used a spreadsheet and a random number generator to drive the traffic between destinations, and just used 2 cycle waybills to bring things onto and then off the layout. sometimes it took multiple sessions to get through one cycle, eg a train arriving in the yard from staging with local traffic after the local has run that day, the yard crew puts it on the correct track for the next local, so it finally arrives at the local industry on day 2. hope that makes sense!
