Continuing along my series of videos setting up my permanent LED display at my home using WLED on a series of NodeMCU's - this video discusses how to use presets and timers to customize the behavior of your LED setup at startup and specific times throughout the day.
I'm not a professional, the opinions in this video are my own. Please do your own research before following any of my suggestions :D
**sorry about the audio on this one - my mic was picking up an odd high pitched clicking staticky noise.. I was able to filter out about 90% of it but it left the audio sounding kind of hollow

The latest WLED version looks to actually have a schedule that you can set up with an added bonus of playlist… Maybe the next how to can be how to re-flash your ESP8266 with a new version. You’ve inspired me to install my “beta” test by the way, a 32’ run below my gutters along my back deck at the house. Can’t wait till the spring when I install my full setup, multiple roof lines that should equate to about 2400 LED’s…

Great tip and thanks for the heads up - I just shut my system down until Valentines Day - plenty of time to do a reflash and check out the new features. Best of luck on your initial install! It’s a gateway drug to be sure.. I already have plans for my deck railings and new 3-season porch that I plan to build this spring to have LED accents

I'm just starting out with WLED and was trying to get it to change from always showing orange when powering up. Great help. Thanks. One question, is it possible to change so that it comes up with a given preset, but after, say, an hour, it changes to another preset?
@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad 8 ай бұрын
Yes.. you can tell it what preset to load when the device powers on (LED Preferences Config Page) you can also set timers for other playlists or presets to have it switch to after some time (time and macros config page)

Thanks for the video, helped a lot! Actually, instead of having an "off" preset", you can create another preset with whatever effect and have the "on"=false command on the first line of the API That way power is truly turned off when desired Also make sure to have the opposite command ("on"=true) for the presets you want to pop on at desired times (mine was turned off and that's how I actually discovered this way of doing it^^)

Nice tip! Do you still get the “stuck pixel” problem with that method where some pixels light back up?

Great video worthy of me subscribing to your channel. I have a question I hope you can answer. The colors that I select don't always match what I selected. Could it be the ESP32 boards that I am using for my controller? Hope you can answer but thanks either way. Merry Christmas!

How are they off? Like you select Red and they’re Green? There is a setting in the LED Preferences that defines the color order of the LED strip (it will say things like BRG, GRB etc. that’s where I would start)

thanks for such detailed insight,is there an option to use strip light as a countdown for the timer ,suppose I set a timer and the light behave like the android effect
@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad 5 ай бұрын
To clarify what you’re asking.. are you talking about a matrix where the lights display a number and count down? Or a scenario where they pulse once a second in time with a countdown? I’m not quite understanding what you’re asking

@@AskDIYDad the second option 😅 where they pulse with countdown
@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad 5 ай бұрын
@@gagandeep1714 I haven't experimented with it too much.. but I think the sound-reactive version could do that if you had an accompanying audio track with pulse tones or whatever. You may also be able to do a playlist but I'm not sure how you would set the timing to mimic the effect you're going for. There is a WLED Discord hosted by Drzzs that may be able to get you a direct solution

I haven’t seen a way to stretch that - would be good feedback for the WLED devs though!

If you know how to code. You should be able to. Fork WLED and look for the qty number 8 in class or method and change it. Compile it and then flash your ESP32 an load your fork WLED version. Viola. If not, getting a second controller on the same lights would double your timer qty. Use a Y-splitter.

I'm doing the same thing for my house but having an issue. Because the presets don't have an off or a timer, you're so limited. I have all holiday's set and an off preset for the outside of my house but my wife wants a section of crown molding in the house setup to do all the holidays but on days that aren't a holiday, she wants white as a night light. It would be nice if WLED had a timer on each preset so that you can configure it on and then say an amount of hours to stay on and then shut off. Do you know how to use the nightlight feature? The "moon" timer button on the main page? I can't find out how to configure that.

I haven’t experimented with that - I have a preset for “off” and schedule it like the others to disable all sections. I did experiment with just having a section lit up for security but didn’t care for the effect and decided to only use it for event lighting. I’m also a year out of date on updates and need to reflash my controllers for the newer features (just haven’t gotten around to it with all my other projects)

@@AskDIYDad I think I might have a solution and i'm doing a video up on my channel. The idea is to create a preset for a holiday and then place it in a playlist. Playlist only allow for a duration of 6553 seconds (1.8 hours, not sure who came up with that) and since I want a 5 hour lights on, followed by a night light. I created a second preset for just white. Then run the holiday 3 times (5.4 hours) in the playlist and then have the playlist end with the white preset. The sunrise preset should shut everything off in the morning. It's worth a try and gonna test tonight.

Ok, confirmed that playlist work perfectly for what I’m doing and the lights, after the playlist has completed, revert back to the sunrise preset to shut everything off in the morning.

ok, but, how to setup a PIR to turn on and off. I've gotten it to Turn the lights on to a preset, but, it just stays on. How to make either 1) a timer to shut off just that preset? 2) how to control it with the PIR sensor itself. I've tested this with a single LED in the circuit, the LED stays on when no motion is detected, but, turns off when there is Motion. This length of OFF time is controlled by the timer. So, it's sending a voltage drop and rise to the GPIO, but, i can't find where to set the "turn Preset off" when motion is not detected anymore.
@AskDIYDad

I haven’t experimented with the PIR functions - I’d suggest the WLED forum on DrZzs discord

Rethink your logic. No motion is 0, no current. Motion is 1, current. Motion = PIR sensor GPIO# = If 0 < Motion preset ID 1 else preset ID 99

Go to the Presets screen in WLED - there’s a button there labeled (+ Playlist) that lets you build a playlist with presets and durations and will cycle through them

Help! Can you set both a Playlist and its time and macros as default to a board, so that even if the system gets unplugged, the lights will show specific presets at specific time as set in times and macros in the program?
@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad Жыл бұрын
Short answer, yes! WLED remembers presets and macros even when the system has been unplugged. You just have to make sure that the time server or network is available when it powers back on so that it can re-establish date and time.. then the macros should fire like normal
@giades7297

@@AskDIYDad Thank you for your fast reply ! True, WLED remembers but i was referring to load some kind of timer i guess to the board itself so that even if you don't have a pc or phone to open WLED, that the lights will show what they should at the times set in the time and macros in WLED initially. Also, even if you open WLED with a pc or phone after re- plugging a board, true as you said, WLED will then inform of the time but no change will happen until a marked time in time and macros. So, say you unplug and plug back a board at 00:00, a change in the lights will occur at the closest time after 00:00 you have set at WLED, and if that is say 01:00, nothing will happen to the lights between 00:00 and 01:00 and thats a problem then. I hope i am wrong, please tell me i miss something cause from what i am reading now searching, my goal can be achieved through the usermod settings, and that would include then doing some coding (which i want to avoid..) .

@@giades7297 I think I follow you now - you can set a specific preset to turn on when the system boots (instead of the orange color) but I don't know if you can define a playlist in that way. After you create the preset, go to LED Settings in WLED, there is a section that defines "Apply Preset ## at boot" Hope that helps!
