Thanks, Curtis!! When I bought the Zoom earlier in the year there were no tutorials just reviews. It's a very intimidating recorder after using the H4N. The manual is OK but overwhelming. Your video is excellent!! I'd love to see more. My son and I are working on some low budget films and we would like to at least have the appearance of being professional. I'd love to see a video on F8 slating of each take and how the pros would do it. Another one, timecode linking with cameras to facilitate efficient daily syncing for fast postproduction workflow. And yet another, how you would set up basic inputs for a boom and two wireless and perhaps a second boom. Thanks again. I appreciate the effort and care you put into the video.

hey Curtis, got a few questions in you got the time? so i do all kinds of recording, like gaming, vlogs ect ect... and lately ive bin really getting in how good my audio is, at the moment im using a 2i4 with a sm7b and some other shure headsets, but im looking to upgrade abit, first to the zoom f8 to upgrade on my 2i4 i love the front with the display and i heard the mic pres are amazing, then im looking to get the Sennheiser AVX-MKE2 for when i do vlogs we got a canon 70d, but i want to use that for some of my other vids i do with my son because when he uses the shure headset where it is a dynamic mic and he talks very low and its really hard to edit it and bring the sound levels up without getting pretty bad, i was hoping that the lavalier would pick up on his quiet talking abit better, watched all of the videos you have dpone on this channel and the other about the zoom f8 and the avx, was just hoping that you could give some professional advise on weather you think this would all be a good idea or not, thanks for your time and hope to hear back

Yes! The Zoom F8 is an impressive field recorder with great mic preamplifiers. However, it isn't the most amazing audio interface. It works, but it isn't well suited for driving monitors because there's no equivalent of volume control. So that's something you'll want to consider. I assume that you're recording voice over on top of game play so you'd want an audio interface? As for microphones, a headset mic is probably ideal for someone who has a quiet voice. Sounds like you may just need to gain up his channel a little more. Where are the peaks when you record him? Generally, I like to get them to at least -18dB on good preamps, possibly a little closer to -12 for lesser preamps.
@SuperGamingFamily

hey thanks for getting back to us, well i do background level at about -36 and voice between -12 and -6, ok so audio interface then maybe i need more gain i think the 2i4 only has 55db gain, i need cloud lifter to power up my sm7b maybe the shure headset i have may need that or i might go for a better interface then or i may look for a condenser headset that may be abit better. thank you so much for the advise you just saved my abit of money lol, back to the drawing board i go

Just a quick opinion on powering via USB and portable power bank. You can do this as long as you have a USB/Hirose converter cable which re-amps the voltage from USB to something that the F8n can use. And depending on usage, this can last all day.

Yes, 24bit absolutely gives you more headroom (or rather, reduces your noise floor noticably) As a mix and mastering engineer I've personally experienced this. Things recorded at 16 bit have to have been tracked quite hot to get things high enough above the noise floor to then use any dynamic range reducing dynamic processing in a modern production without hearing a noticeable floor. Some people don't mind it, but an extra 8 bits of word length to give yourself more breathing room and a better quality sound isn't a bad trade off at all, especially with the size of drives and storage mediums these days. Sample rates are another matter completely though. I know these may be fighting words for some people, but according to the research I've read, and my own experience, higher sample rates are pointless as they do not offer any better resolution beyond 44.1 or 48, and a higher sample rate will eat up bandwidth way faster than a jump from 16 to 24 bit. Personally I keep to 24 48 on everything. But have had some cats request float 32 48 on projects, which is totally fine too. Honestly I'd use float 32 bit too if I was doing an extremely delicate recording with a crazy dynamic range. Say, an orchestral performance in a sweet concert hall or something.
@LearnLightAndSoundSessions
@LearnLightAndSoundSessions 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lock! Good to hear your experience. I nearly always record 24 bit (or process in floating 32 bit). The only time I use sample rates higher than 48 are when I'm recording a sound effect I know I will slow in post.

Hi Curtis, at 5:07 you mentioned Plugin Power. I just bought this Zoom F8n and have been playing about with it. I was at a loss as to why Plugin Power wouldn't work for me. I plugged in my Zoom XY Mic because it has a 3.5mm jack for an external Mic. Hey presto, Plugin Power was now an option whereas before it was greyed out. I tested it with a Rode VideoMicro and it worked fine. Perhaps it's an odd way to implement it but I guess Zoom will have it's reasons. Thanks for this walk through, very helpful.

Thanks a lot dear Curtis for these very thorough video's. Have a question for you... After watching your video about the Tascam DR 701 i thought it to be the best option for me to shoot with the Canon 5D mark iv. Now after seeing the F8 i started to consider this. What i liked about the DR 701 was that it can be hooked up to the camera with HDMI and then start/stop the audio recording simultaneously with the camera. The F8 does not have something similar does it, and how would it work with the Canons timecode if it works at all? Many thanks again, Robert...
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, The HDMI triggering feature was rather hit-and-miss in my tests back in 2015 when I did the review (I think it was 2015, maybe 2016). I don't know whether Tascam has updated the firmware to make that feature more reliable, but there were a good number of cameras with which it didn't work. And even with my GH4 back then, it worked about 50% of the time. That isn't something I'd recommend counting on. The Sound Devices MixPre series have a similar feature and recently update their firmware to work with more cameras. So that is worth considering. The Zoom F8 does NOT have this feature though it is a superior recorder in every other way to the DR-701D.

Hi Curtis! Do you happen to know, why monitoring stereo mix from Ambisonic A format recording (in that case recorded using Rode NT-SF1) in F8 is so low? Levels are like 12dB lower than isolated A format tracks. Did I do something wrong? Is it a bug? A feature? Of course I can boost fader on Tracks 1-4 (Ambisonic) to +12dB but I guess it should not look like this.

Hello Curtis, many thanks for your tutorial. It helped me to get started. Now I am searching an answer for how set up the Zoom F8, when recording on sd1 : Mic 1 and 2 + Automix L/R in PolyWav and recording on sd2 : dual channel Mic 1 onto track 5 and 2 onto track 6 + Automix L/R in PolyWav? I do not want channel 1 - 8 + L/R (PolyWav), because then the automixed L/R would contain the normal tracks (1 an 2) as well as the reduced dual tracks 5 and 6 tracks. That is wrong. How to set it up correctly? Many thanks in advance

I've only been playing around with the for a few days and can't figure out if there is a specific setting for this or if its by design. Just to add - only when listening to the poly file on PC you can hear the actual mix. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

They are the same size, so that doesn't appear to be a major cost with going with the F8. The main thing you lose by going to the F8 are smaller knobs (which can make mixing harder) and TA3 main outputs (probably not important if you're not going to use the F8 as an audio interface or feed a mix to a camera or director during the shoot). I wrote a preliminary piece over at www.learnlightandsound.com/blog/2016/9/27/zoom-f4-coming-soon Good luck!

Hello Curtis I am looking into purchasing an F8 and I had a quick question. You mentioned having problems with using Lav mics and I'm wondering, If I used for example 4 countrymen B6's with the correct adapters and everything would it work? or am I also going to run into issues?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Janet, with the correct connectors, the B6's should work great. What I mentioned has to do with phase issues when you have one microphone (e.g., a boom mic) farther from the person speaking than another (e.g., a lavalier mic) as +Tiny Bird Productions suggested. Usually in those cases I'll remove one of the mics in post. But if you are miking 4 different people, each with a single lavalier mic, you shouldn't run into that issue at all. Best wishes!

I recorded some things on a shoot recently, and when I went to play my takes back, All of the audio was playing back MOSTLY on the left side of my headphones. I was pointing the mic directly at my subject, so I'm not sure why this is happening. The F8 was new out of the box, so we didn't have any custom settings happening. Perhaps I'm just missing something very basic about audio recording, but I'm a bit puzzled by these results. Thanks in advance for any help...

On the original F8, using a 1/4" TRS cable told the F8 it was a line level signal, using an XLR told it that it is a mic level signal. On the F8n, you can switch that on the PFL menu for each input and use either type of cable for mic or line level input.

Hi Curtis, thanks for all these very informative videos. I'm considering to get a high quality recorder soon, but may have got sort of misconception about this kind of recorders, so I'd like to know: is there a possibility to make overdubbed records, i.e., can I for example record one track, then play that track back and record something else on another track at the same time? Or does it only work that way, that all the tracks can only be recorded in one take simultaniously, then played back all together? In short, can I use this kind of device as a multitrack recorder, playing back and recording at the same time, or only one after the other. Please apologize my ignorance, I just can't get this basic information by reading the manuals. Thanks a lot! My background is not filmmaking but recording high quality music demo tapes completely independent from PC or Mac - DAW etc., looking for a standalone high quality multitrack solution.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Zelamir, Thanks for asking. The Zoom F8 (and F4 and Sound Devices MixPre-3, 6, and 10T) are primarily designed as field recorders for filmmaking. Because of that, they do NOT have the ability to overdub when not connected to a computer. When connected to a computer, they can overdub by using digital audio workstation apps like ProTools, Logic, Studio One, etc. So for your purposes, these are probably not the best option. I'm not certain because I haven't tried it out yet, but I believe that the Zoom LiveTrak L12 *might* have the overdub capability: bhpho.to/2DR97wt You'll want to research that a bit to confirm. Best wishes!

Hey Curtis! Thanks a lot for your video! I have got two questions : 1) When you record tracks separately, do you get the PFL or the SOLO version of it? I mean does it make sense to bother doing a first mix on the F8n (even if things will be slightly modified on a computer later) or not? 2) Can you modify the mix while playback? As a musician, I cannot play and do the mix at the same time. So it would be perfect to do the mix while listening playback. And then I wonder if this mix stays for the next tracks that will be recorded..? I guess this option would be only available if recording separate tracks (and not if only recording the L/R mix)..? Thanks!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lionel, 1) Yes, you get the PFL version of the isolated track. It makes sense to do a mix on the F8n while recording if it makes sense for your production. If you don't need it, then you don't have to bother. 2) No, you cannot modify the mix on playback in the F8n or any of the Zoom F series recorders. This is a feature available on the Sound Devices MixPre recorders. They call it re-mix.

@@curtisjudd One more precision : I checked those MixPre devices. It seems you can re-do the mix afterwards. Of the exact same track. My question was a bit different. The idea is to do a sound check. Modify the fader accordingly (while listening playback) and then record a NEW track with this modified mix. (I hope I can explain the difference clearly). So basically the question is : what happens if you modify the fader during playback? Thanks!

@@LionelAndrey Do you mean overdub recording where you replace a track as another take like one would do in a recording studio?
@LionelAndrey
@LionelAndrey 4 жыл бұрын
@@curtisjudd No... Maybe I give you a concrete example : I'm a clarinetist and I record a piece clarinet + piano. There is no sound engineer (other than me also playing the clarinet). So I set the mics (a pair for the clarinet, a pair for the piano and a pair for general). I set the gain for the different pairs of mics. Then I do a soundcheck (meaning we play the first 30sec of the piece). I listen back and realize the balance (mix) between the two instruments is not good yet. Can I monitor this balance while listening back (like on a mixing table)? And then we would record the whole piece "for real" with this new balance setting. If I cannot change the balance while listening playback then I need to change the balance a bit randomly (without exact control - if there is too much clarinet in the mix I'll put it down but I might not know exactly how much down it has to be) and then we need to do a second soundcheck, plus listen again to the playback to see if it is improved. Probably it's improved, but not exactly perfect so I need to fine-change the balance again, do a third soundcheck, etc... Before really recording the whole piece. So I loose a lot of time. Of course this whole process is easier on the computer with the ISOs. But if it's possible to do it directly on the F8n, then I save time.

Hi Skirmantas, most cinema cameras with a line level input have a trim setting so you can adjust that while sending tone from the F8 - adjust the trim on the camera until the camera's meters are at the same level that you're sending tone - usually -20dB.

@@LearnLightAndSoundSessions Thank you for answering my question! The main problem I was experiencing was that when I feed Sony UWP transmitter with mix it wouldn't stage it properly, uwp transmitter doesn't have control when switched to line level and the level would be far too low. I started using G4s for feeds in that respect they more flexible.

Hi Curtis Just a quick question. I bought the F8 as an extra multi-tracking recording device for my Sony FS7. Almost a year on and I still haven't used it. At home I have a wonderful digital desk & DAW which works seamlessly with FCPX for additional sounds to any live sound recorded. The F8 was originally bought to add greater flexibility to live sound - especially wireless setups. I'm sure I will use the F8 for its intended purpose ( like you, I have a collection of portable digital recorders, but wanted "high end" quality, hence the F8) My question has nothing to do with film, but "audiophile" recording. I've been asked to record a beautiful New Age group at the highest possible quality but to "audiophile " recording techniques. I have a collection of superb mic's. Do you think the F8 is capable of doing the job - Dragon Records style? I'm thinking 24bit 96kHz wav
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, yes I think it is up to the job. I would think the bigger challenge could be (not knowing anything about where you'll be recording) the room in which the recording is made and mic placement. But the F8 is very good on the preamp and analogue to digital conversion fronts. Best wishes!

Curtis Judd Thank you so much, Curtis. The recording will take place in a small chapel. The natural acoustics are lively, so some treatments will be needed. I'm hoping to capture a nice 3D sound stage and good dynamics as well as excellent resolution. The F8 has excellent mic preamps i.e. Very low noise - in fact equal to my desk which has class A preamps.

Hi Axel. This can be a tricky situation, even with analogue limiters such as on the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders. What you might consider is setting the gain on one of the mics for her singing and the other for speech. Then in post you can cut between the 2.

Actually too many folks over think what a High Pass Filter is. It does what it says. I say that to too many people, and they get it. Too funny huh? I got a set of the Stealth 8 speakers I was telling you about. Nothing like having all the dynamics, and detail on your desk, like say 400 watts per channel worth. So I am not too worried about dynamic swing.

Good point. There are plenty of considerations around HP filters including when to use them (some are a little too aggressive for use in every situation) and how they're implemented which can inform whether you need to use the filter in particular situations. But at the core, they accomplish the same thing: Filter out some low frequency material.

Hi Curtis. thanks so much for this useful tutorial. I've specifically asked for it but unfortunately I was away home when you run it. I saw the recorded video so I should like to ask you a couple of questions about the usage of the Zoom F8 as USB Interface. Firs is if is there any damage for the F8 if its used as audio playback Interface continuously ? and the second one is to know the two options available in the USB Interface menu for PC/Mac as one is rated by default at 48 KHz and in the other is at 96KHz. Thank you!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 8 жыл бұрын
Running the F8 as an audio interface for playback is not a problem in terms of continuous use, I wouldn't think. The issue I had with it is that it doesn't have a volume control so you have to use monitors which have their own or use headphones (which I only do for a small portion of my listening). If you have monitors that are working well for you, that should be great! As for the sample rate, are you using a Mac or PC? I use a Mac and on MacOS, the F8 is class compliant and works at whichever sample rate you set it to via your apps. I'm not sure how it works on the PC side but I believe if you want higher sample rates, you need to install the ASIO drivers.

Hey Curtis, first of all great video as usual! Are you aware of a short cut option to activate/deactivate the dual channel recording without having to go into the manus? I think I ones saw a option like that somewhere, but it is not in the short cut list in the menu and I can't remember the short cut. I searched the web and read the manual, but couldn't find it. It was something like pressing one channel (e.G. 1) and at the same time the other channels PFL button. I tested it on my own F8, but nothing seems to work. Anyways, greetings from Germany!

I just tested it on my own F8 and found out that I mixed two things up here. I thought of the short cuts for activating the stereo link between two channels. For example: If you press and hold "3" then "4" and release both channel 3 and 4 are linked in stereo link mode. (Do the same to deactivate link mode.) I just thought there also were short cuts for dual channel mode. Would be nice if Zoom put all short cuts into the shortcut list (inside the menu) instead of just a few. Thank you anyways! If I find out about a dual channel or other short cuts, I come back to you.

Hi Curtis, very helpful video, many thanks to you! :) I have just purchased one of these and am very happy with it but I have one question. I used to use a zoom H5 recorded to Mp3, which is really the file I need to use, but when recording on MP3 on the F8 there seems to be something going on in the background.... hard to explain, like very muffled "chatter" or some kind of interference. I have tested with different mics and my Zoom H5, and this doesnt happen with the H5. Am I missing something, or could my F8 be faulty? The F8 records wav files perfectly well with none of this interference in the background. Im at a bit of a loss because I really need to use mp3 files. Just wondered if you have any thoughts on this? many thanks, hope you have a good weekend!

Hi again, I am firmly of the opinion that there is no such thing as the "best" recorder but I can say that the Zoom F8 is a very, very good prosumer grade recorder. The Sound Devices and Zaxcom and Aaton mixers/recorders are "better" for professionals in some important ways, but not necessarily in terms of audio quality. Here's a piece where I talk more about why professionals use Sound Devices mixers and recorders: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nqp1o5Zly9HGgWg.html I am not aware of any field recorders currently on the market (i.e., still in production) which record to analogue media. There are many audio enthusiasts which are fond of analogue technologies for music and sound (e.g., the growing interest in vinyl recordings and a market for turntable needles in the tens of thousands of dollars range). But I'm not so sure one is better than the other. They each have their benefits and costs. This is all just my perspective, definitely get the opinions of others as well. I'm sure there are some out there who hold firmly to the opinion that Nagra analogue stereo recorders were the pinnacle of human achievement in sound recording. :)

Yes, you plug in the 1/4” TRS plug to the inputs on the F8 and that tells the F8 that it is a line level signal. If you plug in an XLR connector, that tells the F8 that it is a microphone.

Super helpful setup guide, thanks a ton for going through the entire settings. The one thing I have not been able to find online or in the manual is to alternate different microphones to the left and right headphone channels. I've used the 744/788s in the past and I liked the ability to change what mics I hear in what ear (boom left, lav right/boom both, etc). I believe this was done with just a knob that ran through A, A/B, B/B modes. I have scoured the settings and haven't been able to find a way to alternate what I am hearing. Right now, all I get is a mixdown of the three mics I have (2 lav, one boom) to only the right channel in my headphones. Playback plays it in both. Any idea where I have to go into to be able to change the output to the headphones? Cheers mate

Do you need to use a mixer with this or is it good on its own?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
No need for a mixer to record high quality audio with the F8 or F4. A mixer can be helpful if you'll be actively mixing a job as linear faders are easier to use for most people. But the preamps and converters in the F8 and F4 are very good so a mixer is not necessary from that point of view.

Great videos, didn't think I would think the f8 is usable. Now I do. If I ride the gain on a track, will the safety ride along, or does it have its own gain setting alltogether? For that matter, can I offset stereo pairs?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, when you record safety tracks, one mic input actually uses two of the preamps. You can ride the gain trim of both independently with the gain trim pots. I'll have to check how that works with stereo pairs. I think you can only configure two channels for stereo pair or dual-channel (safety track) recording, not both at the same time.
@simonrabeder1599
@simonrabeder1599 7 жыл бұрын
So it's just like using a Y-splitter into two preamps? I think it would be very usable, especially in a rush, to just have the second preamp offset by say -6,-10,-12 or -20 dB. Weirdly the manual states something like -12dB. "When a mic capsule is connected, its dual recording track input level is fixed at -12 dB compared to the regular track." www.zoom.co.jp/sites/default/files/products/downloads/pdfs/E_F8.pdf p31

Thanks - useful to know this because that is one of the features that sells this to me rather than the F4. I can envisage a time when I will need 4 mics tops (filming 4 speakers in conferences in schools where I don't know if the sound technicians have a mixer or even mics available!) and I definitely need dual level recording because there's little time to get in and set up and test the levels when the jobs agreed and there always seems to be 2 or 3 levels of bureaucracy and lack of communication and I'm expected to work miracles in a very short time frame - and the key person is never there despite agreement beforehand. It is why I love my Tascam DR10c's so much (not available in the US). As a one man band I know I'm not going to have to worry and I'll get the sound quality I want in the timeframe I want. I also know I can travel around the UK with a fairly self-contained unit at short notice and record in meeting rooms and venues where I couldn't get those convos before. Your films are very, very useful in helping me make those specific decisions. I've bought one on the strength of this one feature alone. I'll go back through all this as well at leisure now. Very, very useful indeed. Thank you. A life saver!

Hi Curtis if I was to use a high pass filter on my F8 while booming what frequency do recommend I set it on?
@LearnLightAndSoundSessions
@LearnLightAndSoundSessions 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Alejandro, it depends on what type of problem you're trying to solve with a high pass filter. If you're working with a microphone that is particularly sensitive to movement and your shock mount isn't doing it all, I'd start with an 80Hz high pass filter. If there's some sort of low frequency hum, you may have to tweak the setting, starting at 80 and sweeping up until it reduces it. If you're out in the wind and for some reason the wind protection for your mic is not preventing all of the wind from getting to the mic capsule, you may have to sweep up to higher settings until the wind distortion is handled. Note, however, that this is a tradeoff--when you sweep up beyond about 100-120 Hz or higher, you're going to cut into the bass part dialogue, especially with men's voices. You're usually safe to set the HP filter to 80 Hz and that will not affect the sound of most voices. I hope that helps!
